    one thing I do a lot is to just make start angle 0 and the end angle 360 and then just set the number of holes to one higher than I want. why? I´m more than likely to mess up the end angle doing the math in my head. also I often skip holes to drill the two that are on the same X or Y dimension first and come back to the other ones later. saves on some cranking handles and setting the same dimension several times. I can can jump back and forth in the PCD list with the arrow keys.

    You are assuming the surface plate is flat. You have to start there and it can be proved that it is flat.

    • @jonsworkshop
      @jonsworkshop Před 15 dny

      Hi David, correct, I didn't mention that, but most granite surface tables come with an inspection report as did mine, so I knew what I was working with. Also, I did point out quite a few times that this was about the method for a home shop, none of which will be working to Aerospace tolerances so any out of flatness of a surface plate or table will not really be detrimental to a home hobbyist.

    The whole series of videos has been amazingly helpful to me! I had an oil drip from my Warco mill (which looks the same as yours), so I pulled the head off. And then left it due to health problems. This must have been pre-pandemic. I was looking at my broken mill just last week trying to figure out what to do to fix it and then spotted your video series of repairs. I now feel (relatively) confident that given an afternoon or two I should be able to watch your videos for guidance and get the machine back together! So a massive thank you for sharing your videos and letting me see how things should be done. Subscribed!

    Bit old now but these Vices are the same as offered by Vevor. Great value and 'fairly' square for the $ I got a second of these 4" for a slightly larger bench mill (rather than use one 6") and apart from one being taller by about 0.6mm to the top of the slide not a bad pair to match. Parallelism and squareness was will get a tweak later but similar to this Video within usable limits for 98% of jobs. Using the tall one as a hand scraping project after decking it down to match the other. Good Video too👍

    Hi Jon, Great tool well designed, I have a question, have you considered making it settable down to one degree? My thoughts are if you add extra holes on the lower face, you could sit the gauge on a narrow parallel and include 1,2 and 3 degrees offset on each side so you could add or subtract the 1,2 or 3 degrees from the basic 5 degree settings. You have probably discounted this for a very valid reason that escapes me!! I have a 6" vice so have more room, over the 4", your comments would be appreciated. Tony

    Hi Jon, I picked up an Elmagrav engraving machine yesterday. I have watched your videos on your rebuild and will be watching them again. They will be very helpful when I rebuild my machine. It came with heaps of accessories that aren’t shown in your videos, and it also came with photocopied operating instructions, and they are in English. There are no photos or diagrams in the operating instructions, but the instructions do refer to photos and diagrams of the accessories how to fit them and how to use them, so I can only assume that the photos were separate and have not been included. Does your manual have any of these pictures/photos? If you’re interested, maybe we could exchange email addresses and send some information backwards and forwards.

    Perfect. Only problem was some previous owner had effected a repair minus the retaining washer and substituting the split pins with 2 nails to retain the vice together. These I had to drill out because too stiff to drift. Because the washer was missing the buffing spring was baddly buckled, with the spring binding around the nail. I imagine this vice was used in a workshop, why did the "repairer" cut corners, when a workshop of useful material would be available?

    Thanks for a great video with a very good and detailed explanation of the system 👍 I had my 520d 2013 up on the lift and was just about to replace the airbags, when i came across your video, and realized that it more likely was the solenoide that was broken. My BMW was also sitting on the ground, and when it was started the compressor would start for a few seconds, without anything happening. I took the solenoide off and found out that it was in the closed position which it should be. When i checked the resistance of the two pins of the solenoide the resistance was 12,8 ohm, which seemed pretty normal. I then connected the two pins of the solenoide to a 12V battery but it remained in the closed position, until i did connect it maybe 20 times and then it suddenly started to work, and i could now blow air through the solenoide when it was connected to 12V. I then assembled it again and the car worked perfect and still does, and i could even return the unused airbags 😊

    Glad I stumble on this series. Last fall, I picked up an original Atlas Shaper from the 1930's. It's not the 7B, so it doesn't have the table support in the front. Last year I rebuild an Atlas Milling Machine and now the task of rebuilding the shaper begins. Thanks for sharing these videos. They will be very helpful. I'd be curious if anyone knows if the mold is the same as to where I could convert it to the 7B series by swapping out the base and installing the 7B working surfaces with the table support. Any assistance would be great. Cheers.

    • @jonsworkshop
      @jonsworkshop Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Richard, I often get asked that. Simply for the joy of using such a fascinating machine, some nostalgia as a shaper was the very first machine I worked on day 1 of my apprenticeship, and it has a power traverse which my mill doesn't, allowing me to de-burr etc whilst cutting. As this is a hobby for me, it's all about pleasure, not about speed. Hope this answers👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
