I recommend Credo: Compendium of the Catholic Faith by Bishop Athanasius Schneider published by Sophia Institute Press. It is a very readable catechism in a Q & A format that, while being grounded in the timeless truths of our faith, directly addresses some modern issues we face here in 2024.
Universalis is excellent, really helpful for finding your way around the Divine Office / LOTH. I've had it for about 6 years and it's on several devices. Money well spent. Noticed today that they have a preview of the ESV-CE Mass Readings starting this Advent, if you go to 1st Dec 2024 on the Calendar. You might have to change location or Calendar if in the US. That's another thing I love about it, it has local Calendar options. Learned quite a lot about my own diocese using it.
Great video and recommendations. When I started looking into catholicism, I started reading the catechism (as well as other books) and once I had finished it, I scheduled a meeting with a priest to discuss. Attending mass or seeing if an rcia group is starting at a nearby parish is another great way to start learning about Catholicism.
Definitely! RCIA is an absolute must
I just received and started "Flee from Heresy: A Catholic Guide to Ancient and Modern Errors" and it good book to have for an Adult Catholic.
I appreciate the recommendation
App: "universialis" or is it Universalis?
Universalis
Great info! Thank you for sharing! 🙏🏻
Thanks for watching! God bless
Thanks for this review. Its very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Looks like you have some excellent content on tap. I'll be sure to watch after work!
I hope you enjoy
Ordinariate Mass seems like such a beautiful thing to experience. In my opinion, it presents a much more preferable order than the Novus Ordo. I think the ideal Roman missal would retain most TLM prayers while incorporating things like the Old Testament readings, Responsorial Psalm, and Universal Prayer as found in N.O., similarly to the Ordinariate Mass.
Yup definitely still has “active participation” in mind
Seems like an interesting concept for a bible. I have the "ESV with Apocrypha" by Anglican Litury Press, and really enjoy it.
@@Stherko20 that is also very popular
Verse numbering is kind of difficult if you want to quickly compare it with other editions, but how do you find it?
@@d.o.7784 verse numbering is on the side/margins rather than in the paragraph
@@ConvincedCatholicism is it clear as to where a specific verse starts? Or you would kind of guess?
@@d.o.7784 It is more of a guess unfortunately. I am not sure whether all Knox bibles have this or not
I must have missed this video a year ago! I have the Anglican Breviary and the Anglican Office Book second edition. In the past, I wanted to purchase Matins and the Monastic Diurnal for my Roman, Anglican, and Byzantine prayer book collection. However, I didn't know what exactly it contained. Your video helped me greatly to decide to buy the Monastic Diurnal. Thanks for all the excellent videos.
The Monastic Matins book is on the way over to me. I look forward to reviewing it too
People complain a lot about our times. Yet it is these times where the greatest resources possible have ever been available to us in the age of the Church. When else in history has anyone been able to reasonably afford access to a summary of all Catholic teaching for every question asked? We are truly blessed.
That is a great point. Most people in the world now can access the CCC they have access to a computer
I heard that the comments do not reflect 100% orthodoxy, but really not sure.
How could anything ever be 100% Orthodox. When there is no central catechism that all autocephalous churches agree on how could every last member or the Orthodox church agree on one thing
It's my hope, I'm in RCIA, that the Ordinariate will grow in America do I can go to those churches. I'm a devoted Anglo Catholic and love the Anglican church and it's gifts of the prayer books.
You can certainly pray from this books I pray a parish is established near you
I' don't need a prayer book. I just pray😅
I am glad that works for you!
@@ConvincedCatholicism it' will work for anyone that does it
Thanks for the review. I've been considering buying this Bible. I'll wait a bit since they will publish it with the Old Testament in a few months. It's a bit depressing that they call the deuterocanonical books 'apocrypha' on the title page. 🤨
This book is the full bible with Old Testament I think you are mistaken
The link to the app does not work, update please.
I tried to fix it. Not sure if it works
Regarding the psalms and the readings, how is this any different than the short christian prayer book?
They are totally different. The psalms you pray are in a different order. This also has more hours of prayer
@@ConvincedCatholicism which one would you recommend?
@@d.o.7784 It depends on what your needs are. Shorter Christian Prayer has just morning evening and night. It that is all you can do, get that one
Awesome to see you reviewing a Bible!!! I am thinking of getting this one. I have the regular Augustine Institute ESV Catholic Edition. The ESV Protestant Edition is not Gender Inclusive. I have not checked the Catholic Edition yet.
I would love to hear your thoughts on it. Hope we get a video soon
It doesn't necessarily have any relation at all to Ascension Press/Mike Schmitz's podcast. Protestant converting to Catholicism here, FWIW. There are a bunch of one year bibles- I'm assuming Tyndale Press started it because they publish the majority of them; if anything, I would assume that Ascension took that idea and presented a Catholic version of it to highlight their Great Adventure Bible and to encourage more Catholics to read scripture. They have the days numbered in addition to the dates so that people who pick this up mid year can begin at the beginning and read the bible in 365 days; you wouldn't really want to just start with the reading for whatever date you happened to start reading.
In the 1990’s Tyndale put out a Catholic one year Bible I just saw one recently but I don’t remember if it was in the Living Translation or the NLT.
@@terrysbookandbiblereviews They have several translations now- I’ve seen NLT, NIV, ESV. Pretty sure there’s a KJV.
Ok thanks for the clarification and insight. It is truly appreciated. God bless you on your journey to Catholicism
I enjoy this Bible in a Year. The daily reflections are pretty well done, although in the printing I have they accidentally repeat the daily meditation 2 days in a row on 2 different occasions. As for the pronunciation of Augustine, I'm reminded of a joke I once heard that in Florida they say AW-gus-teen and in heaven they say aw-GUS-tin and no one would ever confuse the 2 places.
Wow! That definitely makes me remember
I can say that the ESV is mostly the same as the RSV (I can’t remember the percentage but it’s around 80 I think). I’m aware of some Catholics who don’t like the way certain passages are translated but it doesn’t bother me too much as I can read around those. Great review! I own this translation but I have just a standard paperback version, not the Bible in a year version.
Thanks for the insight. I am not surprised of the similarities between RSV and ESV
The ESV is a Revision of the RSV that is why they are so similar the Protestant edition was originally 90% the same, the Catholic edition is more similar to the Catholic edition of the RSV just more modern vocabulary.
As an Anglican this is very Similar to the daily office
Not surprising, even with all the adaptations
Yeah the order is still the same Thomas Cranmer pretty much made it easier for lay people
You know, i heard videos get the most views when they are put out during lunch time since people taking a break at work go on youtube.
Yes! That is what I have heard too. I have so many viewers in different timezones I am not sure what the best time is

Looking forward to this one!
Hope you like it!
such a smoll book. the whole collection is pretty great and looks really quaint on a shelf next to full sized books
I was born, educated, raised Roman Catholic. I’m now 65 and have only recently opened my eyes to realise how much I have forgotten and how much I am simply ignorant of. I’d like to correct that by buying a decent Bible suitable for me (I suppose a ‘beginner’ as it’s been so long) to read and learn from. Can you please recommend to me an appropriate Bible to purchase? I’m lost and confused. Would this Bible you’re reviewing be suitable? Another thing… I read an Amazon review that suggested it’s partially ‘politically correct’… it changing ‘gender’ words. I refuse to play this nonsense game. How bad is it actually? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
@@BlueShadow777 I think this translation is not that harsh with the gender stuff. Check out my first video on the pocket new testament. Its a more traditional translation and it has a daily reading plan.
@@ConvincedCatholicism Thanks
The Lord's Day, being the first day of the week, is a day of worship, while the last day of the week is the Sabbath and a day of rest. So, no, Sunday is not a day of rest. I require no one to observe the Sabbath, but if you observe it observe it on the Sabbath, not the Lord's Day. There is only one Sabbath, and you only choose whether or not to observe it, not when to. God has appointed the seventh day as Sabbath, and one may rest on the first day, but when he does, he is not observing Sabbath, but merely a self-proposed day of rest, for God never appointed the Lord's Day as a day of rest but of worship, and worship is the opposite of rest, for "worship" and "service" are the same word in the original tongues of scripture. Therefore the Lord's Day is a day of service. Is service rest? On the contrary. So the Sabbath is for rest and the Lord's Day is for service, but being a Gentile (as am I), a man is not required to rest on the Sabbath but may indeed serve his God and neighbor on every day of the week. Nevertheless, 'though "it is lawful to do *good* on the Sabbath," this does not mean that we should start working our vocations on the Sabbath, for surely it is not *good* to tire oneself by working the same vocation seven days a week. In addition, even if Christians are no longer *required* to keep the seventh day holy, it still pleases God when we do, so although I require no one to observe the Sabbath, I myself do, in order to honour God with my schedule. Although I require no one to abstain from piercings, I do in order to honour God with my body. So on, and so forth, there is much I do that I do not require others to do. For there are three Ways, the Evil Way, the Good Way, and the Best Way. The Good Way is the minimum one must do to be Christian. The Better Way is the Maximum one can do and sacrifice in order to please God to the fullest extent. Every true Christian falls somewhere in between, and shall be rewarded in accordance to where that is, for we may be accepted by faith, but we are rewarded according to our works. Our Master who rewards us is fair in His rewarding, although it is by His grace that He even accepts us in.

Thanks for your great review. I would love to learn the Gregorian chant notation - have you come across any resources for learning that? You mentioned Seton Hall? Is this Seton Hall in South Orange, NJ? I got my doctorate degree there. If it is the same school, happy to know another Pirate. I believe that there is a place for both forms of the Mass. I attend both and find that approach very fulfilling for my spiritual life. I don't think it needs to be one or the other - totally a matter of individual preference. In one of your other videos, you mentioned the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. I found a church locally in the Boston area that offers this order, and I am going to check them out. Thanks for your hard work and great review of resources. God Bless.
@@edgardomantilla6517 the very same Seton Hall. Hazard Zet Forward! Good luck with the Boston parish
Thank you for standing with the Holy See and not being afraid to say it. I like your use of the word "spectacle". I have absolutely seen examples of a so called reverent Mass where there were many liturgical abuses going on. What people don't understand is that the Novus Ordo is more commonly abused in this time simply because it is the common one - meaning that it has a higher risk for it because of a greater surface area of access. It bothers me that some think it is more important to have a certain style in liturgy than to be united to the pope. When the Tridentine Mass was the ordinary form it was just as often abused as the Novus Ordo is now if not more so. It was often rushed through. There are even writings of the Church trying to crack down on priests not only putting snuff on the altar, but even using it in the middle of Mass. I used to be very scrupulous about these things. Michael Lofton helped me. I am still strict, but I trust the magisterium now that I better understand Christ's promise of protecting His Church from error on faith and morals. Personally, it doesn't bother me which way the priest faces as long as he is being obedient to his bishop. When he faces us it reminds me of the painting of the Last Supper. When he faces East it is also beautiful. Facing us was good enough for St John Paul II. Perhaps it bothers me less because I serve at the altar, so usually I only see the priest from a sideways angle. It is okay to have preferences. But we must trust those who have the final say (just like on circumcision of the gentiles in the bible). Our focus should be trying to place our hearts in the right order while participating as best we can. If someone has so much difficulty with it that they cannot, then they can use that as a meditation on Christ's passion. What better way to do so than to suffer with him during the sacrifice? I like Gregorian chant and all chant. But I like hymns too. Once I decided to try and approach the liturgy from a childlike perspective of just being present, I found a lot of these issues I had went away. I'm a convert. My first experience with the Mass was seeing on tv. I thought it was great to see that Catholics could go to service every day and hear the word of God. I never thought it was irreverent. It wasn't until I was misled by the liturgical wars false narrative plaguing the internet. But Christ has freed me from it. Thank God for those who are trying to calm the storm rather than make it worse. Anyway: good book review. I had no idea that this existed. God bless.
I had no idea some priests would use snuff while saying mass. Totally nuts! I appreciate your insight. God bless!
Question Douay Rheims Bible. Do you think its worth getting the edition in English and Latin if one was to purchase a Douay Rheims? I currently use a NARBE Catholic bible.

I have a PDF version of this book but there is a 2005 version on Amazon for $28 and an Italian Edition for $22 But I use the Parish Chant Book more often and it was around $28 and there a PDF version too.
Good to know there is a PDF of this book
"The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services." -- _Sacrosanctum Concilium_ #116. Vatican II.
So many people do not understand the Second Vatican Council it’s sad
A little later on it also states that any kind of sacred art can be considered and is not forbidden (paraphrased).
@@vivacristorey4363 "#123. The Church has not adopted any particular style of art as her very own; she has admitted styles from every period according to the natural talents and circumstances of peoples, and the needs of the various rites. Thus, in the course of the centuries, she has brought into being a treasury of art which must be very carefully preserved. The art of our own days, coming from every race and region, shall also be given free scope in the Church, provided that it adorns the sacred buildings and holy rites with due reverence and honor; thereby it is enabled to contribute its own voice to that wonderful chorus of praise in honor of the Catholic faith sung by great men in times gone by". There's also other caveats in the section. A lot of the "letter of Vatican II" has been ignored in favour of some vague so-called "spirit of Vatican II". That said, _Sacrosanctum Concilium_ , was, in my opinion, one of the 3 worst documents of Vatican II, and both its letter and interpretation have led to all sorts of liturgical novelties and confusion. My pet gripe is the "suppression" of the Office of Prime. Although, in general, I quite like the revised Divine Office. But there's also the Mass and Calendar changes :(
@@vivacristorey4363 I wrote a reply but it instantly disappeared into the void. Oh well. Yes, number 123 in the document talks about it. There are caveats though. Personally, I'm not a fan of said document. Hopefully this doesn't vanish... 😊
@@DavidWilson-hd6iz Your comment is visible to me this time. I never used to be happy about the document. But over time it has grown on me deeply. I'm the kind of person who needs things explained to me in a very specific way for me to understand. And now that it has been, the council has become one of my greatest pillars of faith - similar to how the Blessed Virgin Mary was first seen as a hindrance to my conversion but then became a most treasured part of my heart. All the bishops wanted to reform the liturgy and it is the Holy Ghost that guides these things. It takes about 100 years for any council to be properly implemented fully. But St John Paul II used the reforms to help revitalize Poland with the New Evangelization before and after he was pope.
In Saint Paul Minnesota, the Church of Saint Agnes celebrated very reverent Novus Ordo Latin and English Ad Orientum. In the 1990s, I attended this parish every so often.
Good to know!
Can you please do a video on how a Catholic can study the faith or get into apologetics (i.e bible study, catechism, church fathers, etc)!
The Ascension Press Catechism would be a good one to review. It seems to have a clear modern layout and reference tools.
Sure thing! I will definitely do that at some point soon!
I did not know this debate was a thing. This was a good presentation of some of the facts; one thing that came to mind was when he said to Jesus “I should be baptized by you” - well, perhaps he already was, in the womb as you mentioned, and that’s why he could baptize Christ.
I got this book when I bought the confraternity “bundle” of like 6 of these little guys. I feel like these make really good gifts to someone who maybe doesn’t have a huge prayer rule as is.
@@clevelandfan295 definitely good confirmation or RCIA gifts
Unfortunately it is based on the NKJV as opposed to the better RSV. Compare as one example Genesis 4 v. 8. The RSV has : Cain said to Abel his brother "Let us go out to the field". And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him.
NKJV has its problems for sure but the selling point is the commentary
@@ConvincedCatholicism I agree. The commentary is "faith" based. Unlike the Catholic Study Bible by Oxford University Press which is based on the NABRE whose notes are sometimes contrary to the faith.
Well over a year ago this video planted a seed for me, and today I’ve finally ordered this book. Reason being that I’m really trying to find an all-in-one volume - something I can use with a Bible and nothing else so that when I move back to college this fall I don’t have to take a bunch of books again. Also, sometimes I feel like the pre-V2 Latin rite is a little too legalistic/complicated and the post-V2 too watered down, in terms of their spirituality (and I think that’s reflected in the Roman breviary and the LOTH). So I hope this can become an everyday companion and that more eastern spirituality fits my prayer life. I’d never have found out about this book save for your review, so a belated thank you. I’m really looking forward to the idea of having a “one stop shop” for both the hours and structured devotionals (and spiritual aids/reading too).
This book was my wife and I’s go to for years! I absolutely love it. Good luck my friend!
Thank you for such an unbiased and great review (especially coming from a Catholic). I've placed an order. There's a newer version but not available anywhere in Europe.
I hope you get spiritual nourishment from this bible
I reviewed this book when it first came out a month ago on my channel.
Blessed carlo acutis helped bring me back to the church ❤ will be canonized as a saint soon
Yes. Very exciting. God bless
Thanks, this was a pretty good look at this prayer manual. As you said, this book is useless for following the Novus Ordo. I think it's safe to say almost all buyers are going to be traditional Latin Mass Catholics. I don't see very many Novus Ordo Catholics buying this, except by mistake in which case they'll likely return it. So why on earth would they include the Novus Ordo calendar alongside the traditional one? It's not going to help if you're attending an SSPX or some other tradtional chapel is it? I was wondering if it includes JPII's "Luninous Mysteries". You didn't say, but if it does who is that for? This really looks like a lovely volume. I might have purchased one myself. But if TAN is going to pepper this book with Vatican II innovations that don't fit the ethos and purpose of the book, I'll pass. It's $51.57 on Amazon right now, plus shipping. There are better options out there for that kind of money. But thanks for the review.
