Pokemon NAIC 2024 - GLC Results & Analysis
The North American International Championship happened two weeks ago, and that means we had one of the largest tournaments for the Pokémon TCG format Gym Leader Challenge, or GLC. GLC has no official standings, but the community came together to compile the top 8 deck lists. In particular, we can thank Wheatr for writing an article with all of the results. A link to the article is in the description. There were plenty of strong decks, so let’s take a look at the ones that made it to the top 8.
Thanks to Wheatr for gathering the results and writing an article for the event: cardboardwarriors.net/news/2024-gym-leader-challenge-naic-recap. Good work, and keep it up!
Update: the last top 8 deck was found! It's a GRass deck centered around Rillaboom and Venusaur to put lots of Energy into play to attack with strong basic Pokemon like Zarude and Shining Genesect. The deck is consistent with so many basic Pokemon search cards: Brigette, Gloria, Artazon, Net Ball, Nest Ball, Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Quick Ball, and Ultra Ball. Good work Vasshhy!
Gym Leader Challenge, or GLC, is a Pokémon format that is singleton, monotype, non-Rule Box format using the Expanded card pool. A list of the rules can be found at gymleaderchallenge.com/rules.

    Is the Ogerpon that bad? I'm newer to glc and started with a metal deck, so when I look at the Ogerpon I see a grass version of Magearna. I'm planning on making a grass deck around scovillain and the new galvantula, so I thought Ogerpon would be a good why to ramp energy early and use it as a late/end game attacker.

    • @EZPokepals
      @EZPokepals Před 3 hodinami

      The attacks on Ogrepon are not that good. Its first attack searches energy but doesn’t put them into play, so you still need a Pokémon like Spring Bloom Cherrim to accelerate the energy. The second attack can deal 120 damage, but your opponent can play around it by putting fewer Pokémon. That’s not to say that Ogrepon has no use; I could see it in a Grass deck that leans on Basic Pokémon. That said, some existing Grass decks have better options. Rillaboom Venusaur decks have options that deal more damage, and Elusive Feather decks prefer single energy attackers.

  • @Sarmachus
    @Sarmachus Před 21 dnem

    I've been playing Solomon's psychic deck quite a bit since it was revealed. It is easily the most misunderstood deck out of the top 8. Including Great Ball, not including Raihan, and only having one recovery card were some choices that made the deck stand out. Although Blacephalon is a great attacker, the counter gain and counter energy is more likely to be used to power up your first attacker. Blacephalon's value comes from the low energy cost, so you don't need to dedicate that much for it. Often enough you will simply attach an energy to it the prior turn. Supposing the opponent bosses it then, you get to keep the rest of your board in-tact which is favorable. Sure, it is nice if it you can pair Blacephalon with Delinquent, but you can't gurantee that you sequence it that way since drawing from the top deck is the primary way you get cards. If playing Delinquent alongside any attacker causes your opponent to whiff an attack, this is just as strong as getting to combo the card with Blacephalon. Timely disruption can hurt this deck the same way it hurts other decks, but I don't think this deck is particularly weak to disruption. Research, Zinnia, Colress, and Cynthia's Ambition give you a plethora of ways to fill your hand. Marshadow can turn every ball search card into draw as well, not to mention the multiple VS Seekers (that is including Mewtwo). Two other details I think were overlooked: 1) Giratina's role cannot be understated. I mentioned the single recovery card previously, but Giratina is what really allows you to steam attacks the best. 2) While sporting low recovery, Delinquent is also helpful. It makes the Boss's Orders less likely, which protects your investment on the bench, which means you probably don't have to play recovery for any of your own support. All in all, I would argue that this deck strong not just into a B01 format, but even in a B03 setting. ____ Please don't take this as criticism, I loved the video! I'm just passiontate after having played it a bunch.

    why does HydroPump Wailord avoids copycat attacks?

    • @EZPokepals
      @EZPokepals Před 22 dny

      Good question! Hydro Pump deals more damage for each Water Energy attached. Most copycat attackers don’t use water energy. Yes, you can copy Hydro Pump, but without water energy, the copy deals very little damage. Special Waves, on the other hand deals a large amount of base damage and more damage if a Special Energy is used, which most copycat attackers DO have access to.

  • @todtebyn3400
    @todtebyn3400 Před 23 dny

    Such a well made video! I agreed with almost everything said but it's do not think lightning spread is problematic, at all really. Every deck has basic anti spread counterplay by just playing into it differently, aswell as various stock options for tech cards. another thought is that the decks that the decks without bench barrier have alot tankier mons and disruption giving counterplay, relying on almost (aside from Koko) all stage 1 attackers for meaningful spread gives you options against it. I don't see spread as winning any faster than attacking decks in terms of turns, which means when played effectively against, most decks can definitely beat spread.

      Baxcalibur is almost strictly better since it’s a better attacker and has lower retreat cost. If you play Heavy Ball synergy, maybe Blastoise is worth it. Maybe they’ll print a strong Wartortle in the future, but … power creep strong.

    What are your genuine opinions on lost zone psychic?

    • @EZPokepals
      @EZPokepals Před 23 dny

      Lost Zone psychic is matchup dependent. It’s pretty good against setup decks with small Pokémon and can make sick plays with TM Devolution. The deck also has better than average stadium/tool removal and supporter recovery. The deck’s biggest issues are big basic Pokémon and specific counters like Lost City. Basic Pokémon in Dragon decks are usually a problem, and Unfazed Fat Snorlax … we don’t talk about it. All in all, it’s a solid deck, but it has some difficult matchups. Don’t let that stop you from trying it though, the strategy is unique and fun :)

      It's very strong to set up the board, does not require being played from hand, grabs basic and non-basic Pokemon, can be picked with Scoop Up Net, and can deal meaningful damage for a single energy. There are so many cards that can search for this card, and Colorless is already a strong type. I think it deserves a ban since it is way, way more powerful than any Pokémon remotely similar in every other type, but ... we'll have to wait and see.
