Dyslexia in Adulthood: Stop Sabotaging Your Success!
Let's I dive into the often-overlooked impact of dyslexia in adulthood, particularly focusing on patterns of self-sabotage and repetition compulsion.
Repetition compulsion is a psychological phenomenon where individuals unconsciously repeat behaviors or patterns from past experiences, often those related to trauma or unresolved issues. For dyslexic adults, this can manifest as a tendency to recreate situations of failure or self-sabotage, mirroring the challenges faced during childhood. These patterns can be deeply ingrained, making it difficult to break free and achieve success. By understanding and addressing repetition compulsion, dyslexic adults can learn to recognize and overcome these cycles, leading to personal growth and success.

Also i read a book basically 3 times slower than everyone else like i was doing a project with some of my classmates, We started at the same time but they were on page around 130 when i was on page just over 40.

11 out of 12, there were 12 right? Either way it was all but one. When I was younger I wanted to be an engineer like my uncle and grandpa. I realized in high school that it just wasn't in the cards for me (I should've realized much sooner). I didn't even know dyscalculia was a thing until later in life, I can read just fine, I and others just assumed I was 'bad at math'. I'm 38 now and just live with it. ...Though it frustrates my husband a bit when calculating HP or damage in D&D😂

I don’t necessarily struggle with putting in numbers. It’s when I hear a phone number on a voicemail someone left me for work and I have to listen to the voice mail multiple times just to remember the number if I currently don’t have a way to write it down. And when I do write it down I still have to hear it at least twice. I’m starting to wonder if I’m Dyslexic though. I also have ADHD though. 🤷🏼‍♂️

12/12. I’m older (like really old) & have learned many coping strategies throughout through shear desperation. I use alarms. So many alarms: when to start, when to stop, etc. Digital calendars save me because I have no real sense of time. I MUST use a calculator for almost everything except for tips (& I do use an app if I have to check myself). Though I learned some simple math tricks to calculate, I was fully grown when I learned them. I just cannot remember or hold numbers in my head. Still can’t. Don’t tell me an address or phone number. Write it down. I have to see numbers bc because I can’t remember. I write everything numerical down. I have to be careful not to transpose the digits. I was the only child of four siblings who couldn’t do math. The other three excel in it. My parents didn’t understand, but they weren’t cruel. I’d cry over homework. I felt stupid all through school (still struggle not to). My eighth grade math teacher told me I was stupid in front of the entire class because I asked him to explain a basic math problem; I was trying so hard. He was cruel and it was humiliating. Going to the board to work a problem? Oh no. Please no! I’d get physically sick then and especially before quizzes or tests. I knew I wasn’t completely stupid because I excelled other subjects that did not require numbers. I made good grades in basic Biology, Earth Science, geology: anything that didn’t require using numbers. Well, except in college Bio Mendel’s peas & inherited traits diagraming almost broke me. :) But I did it. I diagnosed myself a few years ago on a site called Understood.org. It was a relief to have a name attached to my many issues other than “dumb.” It’s hard to let people about this disability because they don’t understand. That’s why videos like yours are so important. I know this is long. Thanks.

My dyslexia is usually more like my brain reads the words in the wrong order or I have trouble tracking a single line of text with my eyes so I will end up switching between two lines as I read. Sometimes I do mix up individual letters but not all that often. I also have a hard time writing because I will mix up vowels or similar letters. I can read and write fine and I often scored higher than average on reading compression but I have always been slower at it than most people because I have to slow down so my brain doesn't jumble things up.

I got about 9/12 i never understood math since middle school, but also in elementary school I remember the anxiety of learning those damned times tables, and in middle school how no matter how hard I worked, I got very low grades (1 or 2 average) even in the easiest of tests, and how in secondary school physics became like another language for me. Now, I associate mathematics and physics only with anxiety, failure, and struggle, for more than 10 years I struggled to grasp anything related to math, my mind simply don't grasp it. This struggle led me to fail graduating several times. I remember learning Biology in less than 1 month and improving so much in it, compared to all those years of trying to learn math, I really think there is something in my mind preventing me from learning math. This video helped me to be aware of what dyscalculia is, though I know I can't seek help.

Hi, first, thank you for the information. Here are some great tips and advice. I wish I had a supporting tutor while trying to learn French. Unfortunately, after the second term, I had a new tutor who did not think I should be in her class or even be on the course. I left and asked the University to refund my fees, which they did once I complained to the University and the Head of the department. Had the tutor made the time to speak to me without realising I also worked in another university; she, unfortunately, lost her job, I discovered later. I have been trying to use language apps while I use them regularly. Some days, I feel it's two steps forward and ten steps back. Any thoughts? On the launage apps available. I am at the stage where I can follow the conversation with no problem, but I focused so much that I forgot I needed to reply, and then I just freeze. Thank you again, Steve

I always felt like the whole “dyslexia is a superpower” thing is insulting to your own unique abilities and accomplishments. And it also extremely downplays how difficult dyslexia makes life and the endless mental health impacts you have from growing up dyslexic. I’m incredibly good at drawing, empathy, social skills and creative in general. And I’m honestly sick of people saying it’s *because* of dyslexia when most dyslexics I know don’t have all of those skills. We aren’t carbon copies of eachother and I really think the term “dyslexic spectrum” should be used more often, because it’s very accurate. I also think we need to explore anxiety dyslexic adults have that isn’t just about reading and writing. We already know we are more prone to depression and even PTSD, and I think fear of being wrong all the time, constantly self doubting, working memory and speech are massive obstacles dyslexic adults face every day. I know I do.

The world is full of half truths. No one's personal experience can be so inclusive as to warrant their disregarding the experience of others. I am only now realising to challenge negative beliefs and programming. As a dyslexic investing my time and energy into reading a book that has false information in it makes me feel like I was never meant to succeed. They tell us we've got gifts that we don't actually have and it's only through learning from others like this channel the real unadulterated truth behind living with dyslexia as an adult. I acknowledge that I've been blind to this process and discovery of learning from other dyslexics but it wasn't easy coming across information. Either. There is a lack of good quality dyslexic educational content. Thanks for sharing your story.

Never have I thought that I "might" have a learning disorder. I got 6/9 which surprises me because I never struggle at school, in fact I'm doing great than most students. I mostly struggle with simple stuffs like remembering numbers in my head and manipulating them so mental math is a no go. I also noticed that I struggle differentiating left and right from other perspective, no wonder I got lost because I can't tell if I went on the left or right side of the road even though that place was just around my neighborhood. I don't know if this is also a symptom but I sometimes struggle with instruction. Like in this video, I have to playback several times because my brain can't process what should I do. Sometimes it doesn't happen if is something I'm familiar, but if it is something new, my brain sometimes panic and if I don't understand it, I'll panic even more. In terms of words and letters, I never struggle with it, only when speaking because I always stutter. It might just be bad memory but it is indeed hindering me from time to time. EDIT: I also do this for fun and thinking that there's no way I might have dyslexia, but then here you go lol

This is a really useful video. It's good to focus on some of the psychological issues created by having dyslexia (not just on the obvious problems with reading and writing). It's amazing how much of our adult self is influenced, or driven, by childhood difficulties. I think it's good to acknowledge how deep rooted a lot of our problems are. I'm finding that I've only recently started to see the connections with how specific events played out for me at school and how they've caused me to think of myself as fundamentally stupid, even now. Online forms are a regular cause of intense worry for me. My tendency to catastrophise as I'm grappling with them is thanks to my school experiences, I'm sure. I can't go back and fix the past (or those dreadful teachers!), but it's useful to try to see how events back then created consequences that are still playing out now. I think your videos are excellent.

Thank you Ariije for bringing these topics to light. It is sad to hear how many folks experienced what today would be classed as child abuse in early education. The UK state school system in the 1960/70s remained steeped in a Victorian style of threat and humiliation coupled with an abject lack of understanding of an individuals learning development; definitely a 'one-size-fits-all' approach... thank goodness educational awareness has changed.
