The Forterra brick works in Claighton, Lancashire uses an aerial ropeway to move shale from the quarry to the brick works. As detailed by Tom Scott in his video from 2021, these large buckets are attached to a long rope that is filled with shale rock and pushed down the ropeway. To bring the buckets back up, they're attached to the end of the ropeway to go back up. Since the bucket going down hill is heavier than the buckets coming uphill it can actually lift the empty buckets.
