    Thank you for the tutorial! I'll want to hand-embroider the front before I start sewing, so it'll be a while before I can report on my success of following the pattern, but I've already come up with a modification: I'll try to add some bias tape over the seam that sits against the skin. I hope I'll remember to update you on how it turns out!

      No worries 🥰 You could try the hand gathering method with an upholstery thread (or even a fishing line) or you could do the elastic method with an upholstery thread.

    • @toothandeye
      @toothandeye Před 4 měsíci

      Most of these ruffle techniques should work for any type of fabric. If you are not sure, it would be best to do a small test strip to see how well it holds before jumping into your main garment construction.

    • @toothandeye
      @toothandeye Před 4 měsíci

      You could use buttons instead or even an elastic, but if you are completely omitting the zipper opening and using a non stretch fabric you won’t be able to get it on or off.

    • @toothandeye
      @toothandeye Před 4 měsíci

      Faux fur can be pretty challenging to work with, quite the ambitious beginner project! You would want lighter interfacing for heavier fabric. The interfacing is just to help the brim hold its shape and structure.

    • @toothandeye
      @toothandeye Před 5 měsíci

      The stretch would be horizontal so it can stretch and form to your feet. For the cuff you can cut out two, one for each sock.

    one more comment: do you think followign this would work on a stretchy velvet fabric too? should I size down to accomodate the stretch?

    • @toothandeye
      @toothandeye Před 5 měsíci

      Sorry I missed this comment! You could do a stretchy velvet, but I wouldn’t cut the velvet on a bias as it already has stretch. You could size down, but it really depends on the stretch. Sizing down too much could make the style be snug instead of flowy. I would sew it up at your regular size until the point of the waist band, without hemming and do a test fit first. That way you can always take it in before the finishing seams. You might want to serge or zig zag stitch the seams instead of doing a French seam as well.

      Fabric plays a big part into how a pattern will turn out. Practicing with a simple quilter’s cotton and taking your time to cut out and pin each piece as accurately as you can will really go a long way. You can even try hand basting each piece before sewing with the machine. Unfortunately, patience and practice are the only ways to find success while sewing.

    How would one scale this up for large feet? Trial and error? I am trying to learn to make clothing for myself, but I am.. A rather large human. I wear US Men's size 16 shoes. Should I just take diametral measurements of various points of my feet/heels and scale the pattern to match widthways?

    • @toothandeye
      @toothandeye Před rokem

      Trial and error would be the easiest method for beginners. You can try printing off the pattern at a larger scale (105%, 110%, etc) and making a test sock. Or you can print off the pattern, assemble it, cut it in half length and width wise, then spread those pieces out by a 1/4”, tape them on paper, and recut that for a larger size. Only cut and spread the cuff width wise. If you made the sock exactly to your measurements they would be too lose because of the stretch of the fabric.

    Hi! I'm wondering if there is a way to modify this for someone with smaller waist and wider hips? Thanks!

      Either don’t sew down the pleats vertically or do it .5”-1” less than required. Should help open up the hips but still able to use the pattern that matches your waist size

      With this particular pattern it would be quite challenging to do with the tennis skirt version. It involves spreading the pleats out in a different way that is really hard to explain in just a comment. If you made this, but omitted the tennis style seams down the pleats you could easily just go off your waist size. I have a video showing how to do just the knife pleats here: czcams.com/video/7GjNUpndqCw/video.html. You can also choose the size that matches your hips and then add an elastic into the waist band, but this could change how the pleats rest against your low waist/upper hip. This probably wasn’t the most helpful response, but I hope it helped a little bit!
