My simple no-crochet fix for a stretchy neckline
Sweater shown in video: Veggie Patch Cardigan, designed by me: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/veggie-patch-cardigan
This video demonstrates how to add some structure in the back neck and/or shoulder area of a sweater to help counteract the stretched out necklines that sometimes happen over time (or immediately!) with seamless sweaters - or to correct (to a point!) a too-wide neck-opening.
You can work the bind-off only on the back neck area as I did, or you can go into the top of the sleeves as well (it's so easy to do, you can take it out and experiment until it's just right).
Tip: Use the same yarn and diameter needle as you used for the body of the sweater. If you are comfortable using a crochet hook, you can use the same principle and crochet a slip stitch chain.

German Twisted Cast On
zhlédnutí 2,3KPřed 2 lety
A great cast on when you want a very stretchy edge: perfect for sock cuffs, hat brims, baby sweater necklines… Also looks great when working in garter stitch. If you know the long tail cast on, this variation is easy to learn.

After watching your video I was able to incorporate short rows into a pattern where there weren’t any, and it was very successful. Thank you!
Love it! Thanks!
Thank you for very concise tutorial!
This is by FAR the most helpful video I have found on short rows. As an ambitious beginner I had no clue at all as to what a short row was, what it was used for and how it appears in a pattern. Up to this point I have avoided patterns that include short rows. Notice that includes most sweaters, tees and even shawls. After viewing this video and the how to do a German short row I think I am ready to give it a Go. It may takes many attempts but at least I can now try knowing what they are actually for. Many thanks to the fiber artist who made this super helpful video ♥️
Thank you for sharing this technique. Will have a go in the near future. Think it will take me a bit till I get it right. 👍🧶
Too wordy

Thanks so much. I ordered a cowl with 10 colors! I just got it in the mail and Panicked! I am an advanced beginner. I appreciate your help. 💐
Wow thanks I really understood a lot more from your handy diagrams! It gives me a visual rightaway so I can imagine what the demonstration of short rows really do. I've seen some short row demonstrations but didn't quite know why people use it, but this explains it really well, thanks!
Please clarify what would be the difference between working (top down) short rows only on sleeves or only on the front or both on sleeves and the front? How will shape the neckline?
Děkuji 🎉❤😊 je to perfektní 👍❤️
Thanks for such an amazing video. You clarified so well how short rows works.
Very helpful ❤
Excellent video! 🎉so well explained. Thanks to the magic of YT, your work 4 years ago helped me today. Thank you.
Ďakujem....
thanks , you saved me
This is exactly what I have been looking for, and I was overjoyed to find it.BUT it's done so quickly that I can't follow it. I've literally spent hours of searching. Please PLEASE slow it down or give some written directions? I would be so very grateful! Thank you. Jane
Hi there, the written instructions are provided in the video description under the video (click on "more" to see the whole description). Also, you can slow down the video by changing the playback speed under "Settings" (gear icon on the bottom right of the video timeline).
Thank you! Sweet and simple instruction.
Super! Thanks for Sharing. Its so easy😂
Thank you I finally understood
Thank you!! 👍☺️
Hi ! I was wondering : when you begin your short rows, how do you know where you start ? I mean at what stich ? Is there a rule ? How many stitches are there between each short row ?
I am a new color work and so glad that I just founded your podcast🙏💝 Thank you for sharing with us
Thanks a lot, the best explication and explanation I have found so far, Again, thanks😊🌺🥀🌹
Great and helpful
Best ever short row video, finally I could figure out how to knit nicely those double stitches even if I start with the longest short row, and knit (finish) all the double stitches in one round, at the end. From 5:00 it is amazing, I could not find it in any other german short rows in the round videos! Thanks!
Great explanation.Thanks
Merci beaucoup ! Enfin, une explication claire de l'usage des shorts raws
Thank you, thank you, thank you! ☮️❤🧶
My tip involves using both hands so that the yarn doesn't tangle. Cc goes in the left hand and mc goes in the right. Unless the pattern says otherwise you don't change it
Does anyone know why the back of my sweater has a hunchback look to it? Too many German short rows? Too few? Thanks
Thank you! That's exactly how I imagine the neck shaping, you explain it so clearly
Thank you so much! I was desperate! I didn't need the Short Rows for the neck but for the underarm and the instruction was quite confusing...I will try now and hopefully it will work out!
how did she figure that out !? That's intuitive tolpological insight many mathematicians (and knitters) would envy
this was really helpful, thank you. I'm getting ready to start my Alpine Bloom and feeling a bit nervous
I was knitting a cardigan and didn’t like the shaping (formed by short rows) on the back lower half of the sweater. I did exactly as you show, drew out the rows to understand how that shape could be altered. It came out perfectly. This really helps understand short rows. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Very nice informative video :) I would be helpful to have some more information on the amount of stitches that the short rows need to be spaced apart in different gauges and different places in the yoke.
Yes!!! Formula would be sooo helpful!!!
Thanks for all you teach, on a top down sweater with reglan sleeve, where exactly do I need to begin the short row, would that be before I reach the sleeves section in the round more towards the front , appreciate a replay, Thank you,
Brilliant and very understandable explanation. Thanks for explaining to us!
Hope that you don't undo the bottom of the gray jacket it's perfect it has a character and is handmade, not a machine made, it is beautiful!
Why do short rows raise the neck instead of lowering the hem?
I wish there was some narrative explaning this. I was with you until about 6 minutes into the video.
Yeah me too. This is the second video I've seen with them NOT explaining what's going on.
Looks like for the very last double stitch before continuing on to the stitches that were not included in the short rows, she slipped the last stitch before the double stitch without working it, then added the spare leg from the double stitch to it and knit both together through the back loop. Then worked the main leg of the double stitch, then the rest of the round. Everywhere else the spare leg and the main leg of a double stitch were worked together through the front loop in pattern so she only applied this modification to smooth the transition back into the normal round.
Read the description under the video 🤗
This didnt work for me like it does here. It just made a mess of my knitting. It made the jog bivger and it made gaps inbefween the stitches.
Right at the 5-minute mark, is that the last DS technique that you execute before you finish your short rows? Thanks.
i'm working on one right now but i'm looking for the hoodie for 3-6 mth old and saw your light brown one a i love it can you show me where to get pattern please
Really helpful thanks so much
Thank you so much for this detailed explanation and drawing! I am a visual learner and this finally explains short rows for me!
What trick?🧐
From 5:00. It is amazing. I have not seen it any other video. And it works.
How do you use this trick to resolve the purl side?
Thank you , I have no idea about short rows and you have explained it very clearly and easy to understand , good job
