I’m impressed that this anime got featured

I rewatched this recently and remembered the reference to Dictionnaire Infernal, and was wondering if any of the other books were real... so thank you for this. And the links! I'll have to gather up any I'm missing of these to add to my own collection. I think The Ninth Gate is a surprisingly cozy movie, though I feel slightly uncomfortable watching it given the director's personal history.

Literally none of this video explains any of the events from season one. Don’t watch this and think you’ll be ready to watch season two.

Not a series recommendation per se, but there's this British detective series Father Brown about a Catholic priest solving murders and in Season 5 Episode 3 a coven arrives in the village and a witch is murdered. Similarly, in FB spin-off Sister Boniface Mysteries Season 2 Episode 4 a local coven is discovered and Sister Boniface is investigating a witch's murder. Both are extremely fun!

I first watched the show first before I read the books. I enjoyed the series. Although I wished it could have been longer. After reading the books I still like the series but not as much. I feel too much was left out of the 3rd season and It annoys me now about some of the changes made throughout the 3 seasons. Especially the story line in season 1 where they made Marcus unable to sire. This made absolutely NO sense when it comes to season 3 and learn he has a whole family in New Orleans.

Books are worse than the show

One notable thing overlooked in this video is Corso's introductory scene at the very beginning of the film. The books that he buys for cash from the wealthy couple are also real: a four-volume set of Don Quixote de la Mancha, printed in 1780 by the iconic Spanish printer Joaquin Ibarra.

I like the Ninth Gate movie despite some flaws. Thanks for delving deeper into it. The Delomelanicon book B. Balkan mentions is fictitious, unfortunately. I agree that Mr. Balkan is not the brightest candle (only literally when burning at the end 🙂) He even used his secret code "666" twice - first in the elevator to his penthouse, then (as you noticed) on the panel in front of his collection. Quite sloppy securtiy measures. Any visitor who wants to go up to the 6th floor and impatiently presses button 6 in the elevator at least 3 times could find Balkan's worthful collection. I also agree that the movie is a little flat because: 1. Mr. Balkan claims to have collected any book about the devil - does this mean any crappy novel with "devil" in its ttle (such a collection would never become complete) or serious occult works only? Let's hope for the latter. 2. No occultist would use the entities Devil", Satan and Lucifer synonymously as understoood by most Chrsitans. "Devil" is a general term for any bad person or spritual entity doing anything bad/evil or against the law or which is deemed evil in Christian terms i.e. being sorted out in religion, because there is no "legal/rightl" place or need for former pagan gods in monotheism. Thus, they were demonized. Also Satan and Lucifer are usually seen as two similar but entirley separate entities both by Satanists, Luciferians and Demonolators. But to all experts in 9th Gate "devil, Satan and Lucifer" are one the same thing. Modern occultis sometimes equate Lucifer, which means "light-bearer/bringer" with Greek god Promtheus, who stole fire from the gods and made it available for mortal human beings. 3. Looks like there is a continuity error in the showdown. The pages Mr. Balkan was spreading on the table are not all the ones signed "LCF by Lucifer as needed for a successful rite. I think the page with the either black or white checkerboard is wrong (the A. Torchia version). So, Mr. Balkan's ritual would have failed even if he did have the final "correct LCF page found by Mr. Corso in the end. Finally an occult hint: The dogs fighting or playing in one picture (chess playing scene) seem to form a Yin and Yang symbol shape.

I've been meaning to watch Witch Hunter Robin for YEARS. That era of anime is a huge favorite of mine, and this just set a fire under me to get at it.

not *necessarily* a witchy film but i watched The Blue Rose last night and although the film makes zero sense, it’s extremely artistically pleasing and i could see it becoming a cult classic! i big trigger warning for a very graphic animal death scene though - i didn’t watch it (turned away) so i can’t tell how realistic the animal looked.

A very fun and very creative cartoon from Felix the cat. Even though it was 1927. They had great thinking minds back then.

The parts with the witch remind me of the movie Blair's Witch Project with that of looking at her in the mirror and running away towards a tree without seeing her. That's how it was in the movie. They would have based it on this to make it.

Love the books, not much the movie

Thanks for the info on the real books mentioned in the film. One ting - I don't think the nine gates have anything to do with the nine circles of hell. It seems to me that the nine gates book adheres to Luciferianism, which is not the same at Satanism as described by Christianity. The nine gates is a path that leads to illumination and enlightenment; knowledge forbidden for Man by God. The realm that Corso enters at the end, is not the Biblical Hell, but something called the Kingdom of Shadows.

I was surprised that enns weren't used. The series never used Salem (Danvers) in any of the shots. Even proctors ledge/gallows hill wasn't used. It was kind of a let down.

I like Book of Shadows. I thought the story was best of three. There was more to it. Better character development and all things film. Oops! It's video!

There is something about this trilogy that I find actually disturbing. Definitely compelling. I watched Suspiria for the first time around 2003 ish. I think it's the second and third that bother me. I liked the ending for the first. I liked the 2018 reboot, but again found it quite disturbing. I mean that it seems to be imbued with a dark energy.

I enjoyed the movie. I was looking forward to it. I attended an evening showing at a little cinema in Austin. The usher was telling me that it was very frightening, and he wouldn't even go near that side of the cineplex while it was playing. There were only two other people in the theater. They sat far in the back and I was close to the screen. There are some references in the movie that are personal to me. I felt almost like this movie was for me. Which is how good art usually works.

Very interesting! This is one of my most watched and analyzed movies. There seem to be some out of context things in the movie. I don't think they ever intended it to be accurate. They included a lot of tidbits and made it into a sort of detective movie. The book is very different. I liked the movie better I guess overall. There are some Polanski-isms that I would change.
