My hero!! People like you kind sir is why the world goes round I’m leading to rebuild transmission on my job helping me make money while you do the same❤
Thanks for watching.
Would possibly have a link where I could get a shift linkage kit for this same transmission ? I have a 62 grand prix 3 speed in the floor and having and issue finding the right parts.
Try Fatsco, link in the description. Or Charlie Tranny, charlietranny.com/375RHM.htm Possibly these guys also, ttps://www.restorationhydramatics.com
what do you use for "lube" those parts and o rings?
Dr. Tranny (Lubegard) assembly gel.
Thx
I started on Toyota A20’s and A30’s as a young guy, great to see the engineering and complexity of the old designs. Looked like there was a lot to knowing the tricky disassembly process on that one. Great work, thanks for sharing.
Man, been a long time since I have seen one of those. Really simple once you know what to do. Thanks for watching.
looks pretty good for being 62 years old. So what was the customers concern the governor rings if were leaking it might not start in 1st. just curious
Yeah, I was surprised. It came from another shop. They claim that it was working fine and that the customer just wanted it resealed. I don't see how that could be. They were afraid of it and convinced the customer to exchange it for a 2004R. That would not have been my choice. If it was up to me I would pick the 700R4. Told them I'm not afraid of it. Still waiting on the parts. They say they are going to get them. We'll see. Been a month now.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission Yes, I am with you on the 700 r4 I never had good luck with the 200 r4 I was wondering if the you still could get the parts. gm sure had a assortment of transmissions in my hay day as a rebuilder. I got out of the business before all of these 8 and 10 speeds came along. In fact it was 2008 when I saw the first 5 speed 5r110 that is when I went to margaritaville lol I sure enjoy watching you. It reminds me so much the way I did things. keep up the great work. 🙂
I found all of the parts and passed the info off to them. Fatsco had them all. Thinking of trying to do the same within the next couple of years. Appreciate you watching them.
If I replace transmission fluid , is old fluid still inside the pump ? Is there any way or hole the old fluid flow out when transmission fluid change ? Please reply and thanks !!!
Yes it is. You either need a flush machine or change it several times. If you change it regularly just a normal fluid change is sufficient. If you are experiencing problems and you think a fluid change is going to fix it, it probably will not.
The tail shaft how much movement do you look for ?
.020-.060
Another great video Tom. I resealed an old cast iron Hydra-Matic that was out of a 1951 Olds last year. I seem to recall it having a different engine/trans than original. The guy I did the work (gaskets & seals) for is an old Pontiac guru that I've been doing trans work for-probably 45 years now. The Hydra-Matic had the toros, I believe the gasket kit came from Fatsco on the east coast. That son of a gun was heavy. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I enjoy every one of them.
Thanks. Fatsco is a good source. One of the down sides of the old stuff, the weight. Thanks for watching them.
The old slim Jim! Great video!
Thanks!
Very awesome to see you working on this vintage stuff. In the days before they standardised it all and each division had their own approach.
Thanks for watching.
@42:17 you mention a shim, does that set the differential preload? If that were bad would you hear a gear mesh noise in D under 15mph that is load dependent? (like a drive and coast difference?)
There are 3 shims in there. One controls the diff. preload. One for the transfer gear preload. And the last one sets the end play in the transmission. If it has not been rebuilt the problem is going to be a bearing that is coming apart, more than likely, causing too much play.
It is Interesting to see that they had vain style pumps back then!
I like the old stuff. I find it interesting to see some of the technology that we think is new, used way back then but never caught on.
Ok good😊
Thanks
Great video. Getting ready to pull trans out of 02 mountaineer 4.6 2wd. Truck shifts good. But has a power steering whine noise, no matter if park or neutral. Definitely trans, think it's pump. If torque was bad it wouldn't shift right would it? Is pump bad about whining in these?
Thanks. Not necessarily. No they are not prone to that. I would bet it is a clogged filter. Thanks for watching.
@CurmudgeonTransmission That's what I initially thought, but changed it pulled apart the shift solenoid, and cleaned it. Still does it.
Then it would have to be a bearing in the overdrive section. That will be the only other thing turning in Park and Neutral.
Trimakasih kepada anda telah membagikan vidio buat kami yang sangat bermanfaat tentunya bagian mesin.saya bisa ikut belajar salam sehat
Thanks for watching.
Very little information regarding resealing it, even though that is the title. Came here to see how to reseal the output shaft and splines. Video didn't even show installing the output shaft seal.
Uhhh that’s what I needed, did you find a source ?
Hey Tom, have you ever done a M5DA?
I have, a long time ago. Actually, it was the MPYA, but it is basically the same. Long before I was doing videos.
Thanks for sharing the teardown. It gave me the confidence to have a go at it myself. BTW, Do you know if there are internal differences between the 5L40E used in the X3 and the one used in the X5? (I know the output shaft and covers are different)
Bell, tail and output shafts. The rest will be basically the same except for clutch capacities I believe.
Did you check the rubber seals on the pistons? Rubber may be hard. If it is not there. The problem is going to be in the valve body, sticking 1-2 shift valve. Or maybe the governor.
Same as the 4L30. Tighten 40 in. lbs. back off 5 turns. I usually end up at 4 & 1/2 turns. Just so I can turn the drum by hand. 1st Gear. On in first and second.
Can I send you this very same transmission to rebuild? I’ve been looking around but it’s hard to find a reman transmission from any place around me that I can trust to put my name behind when I put it back in for my customer.
They don't do carry out transmissions, sorry.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission No problem. I had hopes but I'll end up rebuilding it myself with my friends brother. We've never done a BMW but we've done quite a few chevy transmissions. Any advice is welcome. I appreciate you posting these videos. I'll be using them and the OEM service procedures thoroughly.
Bevel washer within the C-D clutch drum (center support) was broken to pieces and the clutches were down to metal, almost wafer thin. What do you think would cause the bevel washer to break? Spirited driving?
Seen the clutches worn down like that before. Never seen the washer broken. Get a Transtec kit with Raybestos clutches. Bushing kit is a must, prefer Durabond. I put the Sonnax zip kit and both Transgo kits in the valve body. Separator plate will most likely get destroyed taking it apart.
Can i ask how i fill the fluid on top without blup blup on this kind of sealed transmission? Disconnecting one of two hoses that going to front radiator can help breathing? I have kia and the transmission exactly look likes this.
If you remove the oil level check plug while filling it should not do that.
So if your volumetric efficiency is adequate why are you still smoking clutches?
There could be several reasons. Line pressure is low. 3-4 accumulator piston wear. Band adjustment off. 3-4 clearance off. Input shaft leaking in the spline area. Check ball sticking in separator plate. AFL Valve worn. Shift solenoids. Probably more I'm not thinking of right now.
Really Great Video. These are pretty faithful transmissions, It explained a lot of the unknown.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Many thanks. I learnt a lot Thas was very informative
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for mentioning about the bleed hole. Now I can put my transmission back in immediately
Thanks for watching.
Buen video amigo k funsion ase el selenoide negro el de los grandes en la transmisión saludos
Some of this got lost in translation, I think.
what material is the bore cleaning brush, nylon? What cleaning solution should I use? I was considering using some simple green with a paintbrush in a big tuppleware container.
I prefer nylon. Sometimes brass.
Does it differ based on if it’s from a early 2015 genesis 5.0 vs one past 06/14?
I have only had 2 of these transmissions in here. So, I can't speak to all the differences there might be. I can tell you there is an A8LR1 and an A8TR1. There is not a lot of information on these units out there yet.
I have been experiencing a problem with the DQ250 gearbox for the last 10,000 km and it sounds like this: When the clutch engages there is a clunk, the gear shifts are very linear and nothing is felt I have noticed this phenomenon also when I go, in any gear, take my foot off the accelerator and put it back on, a clank is heard. I'll leave some videos below with what I'm trying to explain. I'm guessing it would be the dual mass flywheel, the car having 210k km. The dog bone and mounts are ok. Replaced the CV Joints but nothing changed. The sounds appears when you try to reproduce the noise which gets louder and louder the more you try to reproduce it Also when i'm in idle i feel sometimes some vibratians and when i put it in D, the vibration dissaperes. On VCDS there's no errors from mechatronic unit. What do you guys think?
You will not be able to post anything on here. You will need to go to my Instagram to do that.
looks like you did not soak the clutch disk before install, or measure the clearance.
No. I don't soak my clutches. Never seen a difference doing it and not. I have done enough of these I can tell when the clearances are correct. If they are off, I will break out the gauge and check them.
Ah yes someone with a8lr1 experience.....help!!!!
I have only had 2 come in. I can tell you that the clutches you are going to get in the kit will probably not come out correctly in your clearances. You will have a hell of a time getting them correct. Most are fairly tight, .010-.030. The valve bodies are also horrible , as is the case with most transmissions now. No kits are available for them yet, you will need to buy a new one.
@CurmudgeonTransmission yeah I'm a tech but I leave the transmissions to ypu guys lol. Just started having issues with mine feels like the converter is partially locked at all times, dosent kill the car when put into gear but loads it up well lol. When put into gear the imput speed goes to zero until I start rolling.....try to bring it up on converter and all it does is struggle.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission I pulled the pan/filter off earlier today to find some pieces....and a lot of glitter.
@@boostedstinger I don't know the availability of hard parts. Neither of mine needed them. Hopefully it will be a bad t/c.
@CurmudgeonTransmission t Right....but with all that metal in the pan and 102,000 miles I'm a tad concerned lol.
It a guess game I guess lmfao
Could a stuck 1-2 valve cause me to lose 1 and 2 gear in a 4l80e after driving 15 to 20 minutes?
Yes.What may be more likely is weak springs or solenoids. Sonnax makes springs for it. www.sonnax.com/parts/2026-1-2-2-3-shift-valve-spring-kit
@@CurmudgeonTransmission I have a jakes performance d1 vb with a transbrake. I should have mentioned that. Do you still suggest the springs? I pulled the pan and found the 1-2 solenoid broken, replaced it and issue still current.
Transbrakes are a whole different deal. We don't deal with them. Just a guess, I would say you have a cross leak somewhere. I would contact the folks at Jakes Performance.
Is this used in the 2006 Saab 9-3 2.0T (B207R) ?
This is used in some Saab's. I will look at my application chart Monday.
It can be either this unit or a TF81SC.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission Thank you! Mine must be the AW55 because I only have 5 gears and reverse.
This video was an excellent post.
Thanks
Thank you thank you if it wasn't for your video I could not have installed the valve body kit.
Glad I could help
hi do you have video zip kit with 6r140?
Not on here. I do on Patreon.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission Can you tell me of your video name about zip kit 6r140 or can you send the link? I can't find on your patreon video with same name!?
It is at the beginning ofthe 6R140 rebuild video.
You know how to do these with your eyes closed
Thanks for watching.
You mention another video where you install the case/bearing kit. I can’t find that one. Help?
If you are talking about the center case bearings, I don't have that. They have to be machined to accept them. We buy them already done. If you are talking about something else, give me the time stamp and I will figure it out.
How are you dear. I have a 2008 Cobalt with a 2.2 engine and an automatic transmission. There is a problem: when I start driving the car, the transmission gear becomes hard shift after driving for 5 minutes and then When I turn off the car and restart it and drive it again, the transmission becomes normal and smooth shift. But after continuing to drive the car for 10 minutes, the transmission returns to becoming hard shift, knowing that there is a code p1811(maximum adapt and long shift). what do you think about this problem?
First thing I would check would be the tubes in the bottom pan for cracks. If they are not cracked, you will have either an EPC solenoid problem or a problem with one of the clutches or bands.
Came here because these brands new seals are so tight. I've tried exactly what you did in the video already and even put a zip tie to help squeeze it down but looks like with these new seals I'm gonna have a very small window to get that latch over. Any other ideas? Beginning to think that they accidentally made this a microscopic bit too small
Update: never mind I finally got it. What helped me was putting it in the curved cradle between the thumb and forefinger that way it has a consistent tightness all the way around and it clicked on. They don't play around with the tightness on these LOL
No they don't, they can be a pain. Thanks for watching.
Cant see sht man….. 🤦♂️
Interesting vid thanks..... On this topic (seal rngs) i had to reuse a ring or 2 (honda BMXA) the rebuild kit i ordered (Prec. Int.) rings were a little too bent up/out of round...was ok doing this AFTER i saw your vid which you mention u might do that if needed & old ring looks good & geat channel thanks again
Not uncommon on Honda's. The Transtec kits are much better in my opinion. Thanks for watching.
Do you happen to sell rebuild kits for theses transmissions
No. we don't sell parts. WIT or Transtar. Links are in the description.
Is this the one used in Ecoboost Flex/MKT?
Yes
Got the same one from them. Great product.
Agree
Nice description of the assembly process. These 722.9 transmissions are an engineering marvel. Strong too. I have just purchased a second hand 2012 C63 AMG sedan. The transmission is a bit funky with some harsh downshifts. Not sure that it is the transmission or perhaps the wet clutch up front. Some work to do to diagnose the problem. Thanks for posting this video sir.
Thanks You
