You might want to watch my latest interview with Jacqueline Rohrmann as we discuss a little about how to start, there is no real recipe but visibly showcasing your work and reading/watching every resource you can on BIM certainily helps as it gets a little bit clearer as you gain more knowledge. After my BIMA+ master I stopped looking into schooling options so I don't know much else unfortunately, but I know a few people who have done the Ziggurat Masters in Global BIM Management. Generally speaking BIM is an office based skill, and education helps but is not strictly required to make the transition.
