Mallet finger recovery after eleven weeks
zhlédnutí 966Před 5 měsíci
On October 5, I tore the extensor tendon at the DIP joint of my right-hand middle finger. The injury - although seemingly 'minor' - results in the end of the finger drooping and requires 24/7 splinting for eight weeks. Even when splinting is performed with diligence, outcomes can vary and complications may sometimes require surgical intervention (the results of which are rarely satisfactory).

seemed impressive!
I have a 1200XL, I want a hard disk solution that leaves the cartridge port open. U1M with built in SDX is awesome, but I want to use BXE, in extended mode. A soft loaded BXE is not gonna work with an SIDEx in the cart port. An under Sally or under ANTIC HD adapter thing would be nice for us who don't have a PBI.
This is exactly the usage scenario SIDE3 is intended to address. Since SIDE3 emulates almost all cartridge types of up to 1MB capacity concurrent with hard disk functionality, the problem of cartridge port contention goes away. SIDE3 emulates all the OSS language cartridge types, so BASIC XE with soft-loaded extensions, for example, should present no issues at all. I have tested U1MB/SIDE3 running Action!, BASIC XL/XE, MAC/65, etc, running from CAR image files and saving and loading work directly to and from the APT hard disk partitions on the SD card.
Would love to see this fished someday with support for Bit3 card and xep80.
Yes. If I could get one of the RPi XEP80 emulators or similar, I might be motivated to work on this again.
What a cool setup - thanks for showing the comparison to stock video.
thanks for the update mate. Good to see this. I got 6 ataris, haven't done anything to them yet - but s-video mod. So nice to see options.
You left the green wire insulation bits inside (when you stripped the ground wire) :)
Would the GTIAdigitizer work on the 600xl?
It Will work with any GTIA bar possiablity of the C020120 - French SECAM GTIA (FGTIA)
Could you tell us later how you would have proceeded with the addition of sound?
The owner didn't ask for any special provision; presumably he's just taking audio from the legacy monitor jack. Other than that, a 3.5mm headphone jack could easily be wired up and attched to a suitable spot on the motherboard at the rear of the machine.
Awesome. Thank you!
Do you have a link to the RGB2HDMI device?
Good point - thanks. I forgot the links on Sunday. I'll add the GTIAdigitizer links shown in the video, but I have no links for RGB2HDMI aside from what I just Googled, including the Github repo: github.com/hoglet67/RGBtoHDMI
On my channel I had lots of issues with an RGBTOHDMI and a STFM. I was trying to capture 12 bits for hi red mono. I had to drop to 3 bits and it was great. I got some additional boards from a different Atari fan source. Just worked. So sometimes one RGBTOHDMI is just "odd". But the video quality is great.
@@stephenhookings1985 I've heard a few tales of GTIAdigitizer and RGB2HDMI both being difficult to set up, but fortunately - or perhaps unfortunately - everything just worked in this instance. As mentioned in the video: I could really use a stock RGB2HDMI (despite the fact I don't NEED one) in order to make a comprehensive video about it.
In the USA Texelec has them. In EU there's the MCE2HDMI which is the same in an enclosure from Serdashop.
I've got the GTIAdigitizer in my 800XL and a VICdigitizer in my C64S. The image from the RGB2HDMI is pretty blooming good but I'm working on a method of injecting audio also. If I get it to work I'll give you a shout. Keep checking the firmware updates on GitHub for the PiZero in the RGB2HDMI.
Wow!
You look fantastic. Mine is on the ring finger. I wore it for 60 days (February and March 2024), and the doctor informed me I didn't need the splint and that I should see hand therapy after 1 month. I went to hand therapy last week May 15, 2024 and they said my finger became worse with a 35-degree drooping swan neck deformity, so they prepared a custom splint mold. They told me to wear it for additional eight weeks😥. I went back to the doctor today 5/20/24, and I'm not sure why they took off the splint and ask me to make a fist, because aren't you supposed to wear split religiously and not bend no matter what? Sorry for the rant.
Thanks. I have at least 5-10 degrees of lag now and very little strength in extension, but it's not really bothering me and I guess in a year or so's time it'll hardly be noticeable. I did eventually lodge a formal complaint with the local NHS trust, and they concluded that 'mistakes were made' and their resolution was 'better triaining in future'. I coudn't be bothered to argue the toss about it beyond that point, mainly because my outcome isn't that bad. I'm sorry to hear of the problems you're having. I heard from a friend about his wife's swan-neck deformity, and that's a load of hassle you don't need. From my own understanding, you're quite correct in saying that the finger should be held in full extension 24/7 for 10-12 weeks from the day of the injury (not that I was told this at the time either). I am sure every case is different, however, and the problem with this injury as that even if you do everything right, good results are not absolutely guaranteed.
I just got myself a Fujinet and…. A SIDE3! Can’t wait to play with that. Thanks for your great work!
Thank you!
Hi FJC - Thanks for all your great videos and and awesome knowledge and advice - Do you know when I could order the replacement Delay Line kit that you mentioned? I've seen the GitHub link but I don.t think I can order from there? I've got an 800XL that I'm trying to repair and the Delay Line Chip is my first possibility. If that doesn't fix it then I'll be after a new CPU too. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Thank in advance Jon!
Hi Paul. Sadly I don't know where one would purchase a pre-assembled delay line replacement, but you might consider the Lotharek 64K SRAM board, which will make the delay line redundant anyway (and replace a large amount of the RAM bus, including all the DRAMs and much of the 74 series logic). lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=291
Looks amazing… my u1mb came with graphical os in one slot, but when I ran it, the window just freezes on start. What could happend. I have an 800 XL …

Thank you! Your video saved me having to buy silver paint. I got mine working without it. I found that someone had already attempted the fix, the membrane side of the connector was clean, but they left the tape on the PCB side, They actually painted silver on top of it . All I had to do was remove the tape from the keyboard, clean it up and put it all back together.
That's great! Applying the conductive paint over the old glue on the PCB side without removing the material preventing contact is certainly an interesting approach, LOL. :)
On the speech synthesizer, the door does nothing. It was meant to accept new speech ROMS but that never happened. And as for the joysticks...they are quite awful as you will soon discover. LOL
The TI-99/4a was my first computer. I have many of them now and still use them. It really is a strange computer that you either love like me, or hate. lol
There is a fix for that Alpha Lock problem using a diode.
Really? I assumed this was by design owing to signal contention with the joystick or something. Nice.
Nice lighting!
Thanks!
Good computer, terrible joysticks. The speech synthesizer needs speech enabled carts or extended basic.
This was a capable and interesting machine, but unfortunately it was never going to work in the UK. We used tape for games in the early days, and typically never bothered to expand our machines. Out of the box, the TI was completely unsuited to games thanks to the machine's inability to run machine code from BASIC, which immediately prevented good quality cassette based games from being available. I thought at first that this might have been my friend's machine from back in the day - as there can't have been many of these in the North East (friend lived, still does, in Sunderland). His dad was a massive Sanyo fan so it surprised me even at the time that he ended up with one of these rather than an MSX!
Stuff comes in from all over the country (and world, in fact), although I do get the odd local client coming down to the house in a car. This one was posted in last year from somewhere in the UK, but I suppose you never know where this machine's been during its long history.
To delete a character, move the cursor back (fctn key and S key) on top of the character, then press fctn 1 (DEL). Easy when you know how 😅 still not as complex as the spectrum keyboard 😊
LOL - thanks for that. Easy when you know how, as you say. :D
The door on the speech synth doesn't serve any function. The original intention was to produce different voice ROMs with male/female voices and different vocabularies etc. but it never came to fruition.
Ah - thanks. So it's bascially just a handy storage compartment. :)
The PAL TI-99/4A outputs YUV from its video connector. Maybe that's why the cable doesn't work?
You mean that the component inputs on the TV might be particular about it being YPbPr instead?
The RF signal on mine is superb too, actually better than the component using coolnovelties cable (not a dig at coolnovelties, i think the machine is just built that way)
You have to put a chatty dwarf inside the speech synth box to make it work.
Ah - I did wonder. :)
Nice work.
Thanks!
My first computer was a TI-99/4A. I loved it. The packaging, manuals and documentation were excellent. And I did use a tape recorder to store programs, but I never got a voice synth.
Yes: presentation was generally excellent. Just such a quirky machine with the benefit of hindsight.
Of all the computers I own, I have to say that the TI 99/4a has the best video signal of them all in unmodified form. I use a CoolNovelties component cable via an OSSC to HDMI and the image quality is unmatched other than by machines like my 65XE and 800XL that have VBXE's fitted. Weird machine though.
Suspect TI had decent analog engineers around at the time they designed this machine.
Seems so, yes. I've been reminded of the RGB mod for this machine, which is apparently sublime, but not having even seen component first hand, I'm sure it's excellent given the quality of RF out of the box.
I wonder if rufies can erase the TI's 16k of memory? Bill would know!
Not according to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, LOL
A lifelong Atari fan, I always had a fondness for the TI as well. Great keyboard, a very nice built-in BASIC.
I really liked this machine too, which is why the various puzzling design decisions regarding the keyboard editor, etc, are so frustrating.
Be nice if he would explain up front what the devices are for and which machine they work in, where do they plug in. Lots of acronyms and technical talk but difficult to follow at times.
Forgive me if I say 'OK Boomer'. :)
Looked better as it was
How do get an Atari 800 to display on a modern LCD monitor?
Unless the monitor has composite or s-video inputs, get yourself a RetroTink upscaler or similar. Alternatively, install Incognito and VBXE (which may still require an RGB upscaler), or Sophia (which provides DVI and thus HDMI out of the box).
As long as the keyboard switches are somewhat standard that is a super easy fix. It does require de-soldering, but once that’s done it’s a breeze. You can get stiffer higher quality springs that will last almost indefinitely. Or depending on the pin layout you could just out right replace them. Classic style switches are a commodity, and can sometimes be worth something. Edit* After looking up with switches while I believe the springs *could* be replaced, replacing switches is a different story. I’d find it hard to believe there isn’t some way to convert the keyboard to a modern version tbh. That would be interesting.
You'll recover real soon. I had the same thing but the doctor told me I needed surgery. Anyway I just wore a splint instead of going to surgery. Took a year for my finger to fully recover but now I'm able to play guitar again without any problems! I pray your finger will recover soon just like my finger did since it happened on my pinky.
Thanks for the positive note! I've almost forgotten about the injury now, day to day (until I glance at the finger), and I have to admit it's a few degrees straighter than it was. I suppose, then, this improvement will continue, although thankfully it doesn't really affect my style of guitar playing anyway. Congratulations on your excellent recovery (and what a blessing to be able to play your guitar again).
Is Side3 loader cart compatible with an 800XL with the 256k RAMBO XL upgrade?
Certainly, yes
Hi Is the Sophia 2 the best video upgrade for the 130xe, if anyone can get them
For clarity, it can't be matched.

Yep - I love them, and was pleased with this one.
Wow, this popped up like it was recommended. Thanks Jon.
Yeah - I need to make a dedicated guitar channel.
8-bit Commodore and Atari computers use Chroma levels of 1Vpp, while the contemporary S-Video standard defines it as 0.3Vpp... that's why the image is so dark.
Partly, but as you can see towards the end, I discover a smoking-gun issue which - once fixed - completely sorts the obvious defects.
I like the look of the original 800 or the XE version. Not sure what I dont like about these tho my drive was a 1030 and it was fine.
Jon, are there any signals needed by the U1MB that aren't available on the Parallel bus connector? With the reproduction of the 1090XL I wonder if the U1MB could be moved to a card plugged into the PBI. Or, would the PBI code on the U1MB conflict with the PBI as implemented by the 1090XL?
HLT isn't on the PBI bus, but Candle must have found a way around that since an external PBI version of U1MB already exists and simply needs time for further hardware and firmware development: czcams.com/video/UN-8P3iK1IM/video.html
@@flashjazzcat I do recall watching that video and thought a lot of that was on hold due to chip shortages. Having invested in the 1090XL, I'd like to see the U1MB and VBXE produced to work with it.
@@michaelstoliker971 I have no idea whether Candle's designs will/could be adapted for the 1090XL, but in any case: the delays regarding the new hardware appear to be primarily caused by lack of time (certainly in my case, anyway).,
Extra points for the Star Trek opening.
If it makes you feel any better, practically all one-side-only-ground-vias that I was working on separated eventually ;)
Thanks! It helps :)
