Cider tasting: Drago Slayer Gold by Mind's eye cider company
James McLarnon and his Dad visited my orchard last year after getting in contact and took away a car full of apples which he has made into cider. He gave me a few bottles of his own cider to taste. Here is a live and honest tasting of 'Dragon Slayer Gold' which has loads of runes and some astonishing art work on the label!

We stopped using crop protection chemicals about 7 years ago, apart from some herbicide to stop grass smothering the trees. On the whole, it has worked out OK (given that we aren't selling fruit so can live with spots and maggots) but recently we have been having more trouble with the leopard moth.

APOLOGIES for poor sound quality and wind noise-first time I had used this Panasonic Lumix camera and had expected better quality, also wind blow up just as we started filming. At the orchard, I found a large bumble been that had got itself into trouble in a water container. I rescued it, and (caution, spoiler alert) it flew away strongly. This was mainly about testing out my new Canon EOS 200 DSLR camera, but also as I care about bees.

Here we trim and tidy several Perry pear trees (variety Blakeney Red) which were grafted over the last couple of years. Corrective pruning of cider apple trees after broken branches

Last year 2 of our cider apples, variety Somerset Redstreak, had extremely heavy crops and branches snapped off under the weight. Here I correctively prune them. Also remove a large broken branch from a 30 year old tree of Tremlett's Bitter.

Nice to see you back Stephen! Even though I’m across the pond in Maine, USA I really enjoy your content and your straight shooting. I recently moved and put in a small orchard at my new place with heirloom apple varieties. I included Wickson and Grimes Golden apples for cider, both are reported to be good “single variety” cider apples. Well we will see in a few years! Cheers!

I know you will hate me guys but this is very sad, I really like Stephen but I like to see him in his orchard minding the trees and growing vegetables, I don't like to see him in a room drinking alcohol and only God knows how much does he drink, when I was watching his videos I was saying to myself: lucky man to have such a beautiful orchard to spend his retirement, I never thought it will end this way, I think what happened was so much apples not much you can do with them, make cider and more cider and ended this way. I am typing and fighting tears

Saw your photo in the YT feed & thought, "What happened to Gary Chynne?" Then realized it was you, sir. Glad to find you hale & hearty. My climate is hot & dry on basalt soil. Quite different from Hampshire. You were part of the reason I now grow Lamb Abbey & Claygate, 2 of my 3 favorite apples (3rd is GoldRush). In hopes of making cider at home someday I have tried a bunch of cider apples & now have American red-juiced: Otterson & Redfield. Cheers!
Glad to here from you I grafted ah planted 500 apple tree years back because of your incredible videos. I got hit by hail twice the first spring and lost most trees and have slowly been building the orchard again. I'm in America. I had put in 70 varieties. Thanks for you past videos and this one.

If I baught a granny smith root stock and then grafted other apple tree scions onto it, can I let the root stock create branches to get granny smith apples or would I only be able to get the apples from the scions I grafted onto the root stock?

Last fall was the first year I pressed cider that included apples I grew myself. Among those were some Dabinette that came from a tree I grafted myself. Your videos set me on that path many years ago. The finished product was excellent. I wish we were on the same side of the Atlantic so I could share. Cheers!

Hi to you all, good to see you are doing good. You inspired me to start an Heirloom orchard on the campus of UW-Oshkosh, Wisconsin. We have now all the still exciting apple varieties originating from Wisconsin. It includes the newly rediscovered Ratzburg apple and 22 others. We also do a grafting and scionwood exchange event around earth day. We gave away 150+ heirloom apple trees. Paying it forward!
Interesting. I don't know about leopard moths but we certainly have no woodpeckers here so that is not something we have to worry about! Canker on the other hand is, and has ever been, a major head ache. Your orchard walk reminded me of the Japanese proverb, "The best manure is the gardener's shadow"!

Hey, Stephen, how lovely to see a video from you. Though I don't like beer I love to hear people eulogising about their 'passions'. I still think of you whenever I badly prune my apple trees but, amazingly, after some 10 years my new orchard is full of potential new apples for the very first time! So, Cheers! I still get my scythe out occasionally in my little, Croatian village!
