Mine arrived with a defective 3.5mm plug for the PTT switching, I'd advise testing before connecting to a rig if you make up a PTT cable using the supplied plug. Also the unit draws 45mA, not the 200mA stated so you are good to use a low current output pin to power the device if your rig has one. I use an RSPduo and the isolation is -68db at 10w and -48db at 100w with IF and software AGC disabled. Well within safe limits for the RSPduo, but your results may differ. HTH.

My PTT was good to go. I wonder how the attenuation is thru it? I need to check this. At the moment the plan is connect antenna on it to my loop on the ground and listen on the SDR HF DISCOVERY. The PTT is activated by the Hermes Light II …. Some carefully crafted circuits will get you 20-30W without too much expense. 20W is an S point over 5W and doesn’t have a huge current requirement at 12V. But as far as learning the code. Just start. Learn the letters, numbers ? / and <BT> which is the break character. I used Morse Whisperer to learn the characters. That’s 10WPM sent at 5WPM. I then did the Lockdown Morse sessions to get myself up to 20WPM sent at 10WPM. Tuesday nights, here in Aus, you can get on the air at 5-8WPM and people will slow down. @MidlifeRenaissanceMan Před 15 dny

@@PaulaBean the capacitor is motorised. It’s manually tuned with the aid of a VNA or the SWR sweep on the radio. The other thing of note is the ratio of windings on the toroid feedline transformer. The loop covers 20-40m but the radiation resistance drops as you lower the frequency. You need more windings on the 40m band than the 20m band. I have made two of these loops. This larger one which in various iterations has performed incredibly well. The second is a smaller one which I can poke out the window of a first floor room and operate on 20 and 40m Now, unlike many loops you may have seen, these loops will take the full 100W out of a transceiver. Earlier ones weren’t quite as robust, but were still able to take 50w before immolation. We have been talking for over a year now of doing a separate channel that would be a little more structured / focussed where we can go into more details on the stuff we do and some of the theory vs practical aspects of the hobby. I’m thinking that the 4m and 3m loops are a little too long and so the turns ratio for those bands is a little too low and as a result the coupling suffers. But you’d see a higher corresponding SWR, so where is it going ???? I’m not seeing a high SWR. It’s less than 2. The poverty loop made of 2.5m of RG8 has 10dB over the 3m aluminium strap loop on 10m with some initial tests More experiments to do. I’d love to try a 13m loop on 80m. More engineering and experimenting time needs to be spent on this project. But a loop for 40m through 20m, that takes a 100W…I can say I have achieved that. A bit of refinement is optional, such as the auto cutoff that I have in the poke-out-the-window-tenna, and some cable management, and a battery pack / switch thing that was a little less _ephemeral_ Essentially the hard work is done. The best solution I've found so far for feeding good power to the QMX (which really is quite finicky): get a cable that is USB-C + Power Delivery on one side, specifically labeled for 12V 5A; and barrel connector on the other side. Then, any USB-PD power bank, like you'd use for your phone, will deliver that solid 12V power that makes the QMX happy! If you want to back it with a more traditional radio battery like a Bioenno LiFePO4 instead, Tufteln sells powerpole to USB-C PD output that will also work with that 12V/5A USB-C cable. There are lots of ways to solve this, of course, but so far, those are the ones that kept me from having to mod a cable!

That said, if it works and you’re making QSOs, you’re doing better than me. I’ve been on the air once in 3 months. But it was CW, with a straight key, so I am justified in my feeling of superiority over the _wailing cats_ hams. 😉

A very interesting video. I was always very impressed by Drew Diamon's homebrew radio projects. I bought all of his books and particularly like his style of construction and the way he explains and displays his diagrams which I find unique. I had to order my books by phone from here in the North East of England. I wondered what ever happened as he seemed to go quiet and never saw any more books by him published. Never met or spoke with him but he was a massive inspiration to me as I built my first ever SSB transceiver which was based on his 40m TCF design which I added some more modifications to but had more fun with this simple rig than any commercial transceiver and it was only 2 watts output. I made a CZcams video of it and cant believe it was over 15 years ago. (M0DAD Homebrew 40m ssb/cw transceiver) czcams.com/video/ndrw0RtvVMo/video.html 73 from the UK...David M0DAD.

Thanks for the comment. I worked him briefly the other day on 40m CW. Still an active ham. A true and modest gentleman. I have thus far built his miser linear DC shack PSU (used 2 rewound microwave transformers in series ). Also have built a SMPS filter and his field strength meter and part of his little mate transceiver (rcv section). I agree thoroughly, his designs are tried and tested.73 de VK2AOE.

I’m delighted to hear stations doing what is described as “slow speed” code and that is, in reality, slow speed code. It drives me nuts hearing people, websites, and contest sponsors use the vocabulary but yet send and receive code that is typically “no faster than 20 words per minute.” That’s not slow, folks. Remember the old days when code was part of the test standing between you and your license upgrade? 20 words per minute (to pass the EXTRA EXAM) played a major role in keeping many hams at “Advanced” (13 words per minute). I’m moving along -at a snail’s pace-toward actually being good at using code. Send my way anything beyond 7 to 10 words per minute and I won’t get anything. Nothing. I know all the letters and numbers-sent at 28 wpm letter rate-but without 4 to 8 times normal letter separation I’m continually two to three words behind trying to head copy. And that means a lot of missed words and failure to understand any of the transmission. Now, if you want to sponsor “Slow Speed Contests” requiring max speed of 10 words per minute, sign me up. Better yet, create a scoring category in the CQ Worldwide CW Contest that recognizes the most QSOs and multipliers logged at NO FASTER THAN 10 words per minute. It’ll never happen, so excuse me while I go back to my practice apps and CZcams channels.
