    Love your channel. Short, to the point, useful videos. I have Basic Chess Patterns and will be getting Common Chess Patterns after I get through my easier tactics courses (like Everyone's First Chess Workbook). Do you have recommendations on chessable settings and how fast you should be before moving on to the test section? I never know how to set things up for tactics and whether I should be speed running patterns a la the woodpecker method or just letting the space repetition algorithm do its thing. (Also somewhat annoy that I can't see my overall accuracy for a course -- seems to just show accuracy for a session.)

    • @benedictineonchessable
      @benedictineonchessable Před 10 dny

      Thanks Greg. I just prefer the Chessable default settings. If they have set them up for the maximum efficiency I don't see the point in changing the schedule settings. Extra reps are also good though. It depends on how you are getting on with the isolated patterns and will vary from person to person. Ideally, you should be aiming for almost instant recognition on the one move patterns, 5-7 seconds at most. 10 seconds or so for 2+ move patterns, but as near to instantaneous as possible. Cheers.

In fact I'm such a low level player (not even really a player...) that I'm far from ready for something like this. But I hear so much about opening frustrations among amateurs that when I happened to see this book mentioned, I became very curious about all the "minimal theory", "universal for both W and B" stuff that I wanted to hear your reaction to it. I hope one day to work up enough basic chess skill to justify studying it, as given your background and the clarity of your presentations, I trust your judgment. Many thanks.

      No worries thank you for the suggestion. It very much might be something I take up in my actual games, especially on the black side. I did mean to mention it was a viewer suggestion the truth is I didn't intend to do this review as it is as I have been having mic issues so I just started out sound testing then went on a bit. This is why there are not many variations in the video but I might do a part B showing more. Of course, you can't show too much as it's not far on the authors so you have to balance it out. Thanks again!

    couldn't agree more with french defence :D I also score very bad against it since you are supposed to prove advantage as white but as it always happens in chess, you make one bad move black come at you so fast. A lots of theory there but dispite im very annoyed by the opening I find positions come out of french very interesting for both sides. Petroff is the most annoying for me and I would add there Philidor aswell because it's very solid and boring opening.

    • @benedictineonchessable
      @benedictineonchessable Před 17 dny

      Yes, another issue with the French as white is that no matter what line you choose black will know it better.

  • @fragranceenthusiast5790

    I think you'll find that the Scandinavian, while it does seem that black is selecting the opening, has inherent problems with the positions you will get against white players who know what they are doing. Also, the Slav recommendation with 3...dxc4 and ...Be6 is suspicious and again if white knows what they are doing there could be some sacrifices coming up on the kingside in the mainlines. They are in Avrukh from a few years ago and probably have been developed much further for white in recent years with better computers. While I very much enjoy the book and also Burgess's writing style, I found that I did not enjoy the black positions after 1 e4 and 1 d4.

There was one move in particular where you place the bishop infront of your pawns for an incredibly weird position that just looked bad to me. But you have a good point in saying it cuts down a lot of whites options. May be a nice price to pay for good positions. Just have to be open minded and get used to the proposed positions. Do you think it will make you feel confident in 1.c4? I always seem to face responses that trow me out of theory quickly and then i regret starting to learn it.

      Oh right, the bishop on e6. Yes, looks odd. At the moment I don't think I will be tempted to switch to 1. c4, no. No offence but I fail to see how analysing inferior moves when the winning move is obvious helps your chess strength at all. Far better is to play through master games and variation analysis that are readily available on line and in books.

    • @benedictineonchessable
      @benedictineonchessable Před měsícem

      Hi, my point is that someone could have played the correct line without even realising why the Queen move is incorrect. It was only by playing over the incorrect line that we can see the refutations and the defensive patterns. The main point is that if you are doing random chess puzzles then it's much better to make the most of it and exploring the various continuations (if relevant) than just clicking on 'next puzzle' and potentially missing out on something. In many cases there might be nothing of interest in which case then you can just click on to the next puzzle, but sometimes it's definitely worth exploring in a bit more detail - even if this is just a couple of minutes.

  • @moritzbranco195
    @moritzbranco195 Před měsícem

    nice video. I think understand your point, but what I miss the practical aspect in further analysing in depth Qd4 instead of Bd4, given that it is clearly worse? would you still carry on through the position with Qd4 in a real game after you saw Be3?

    • @benedictineonchessable
      @benedictineonchessable Před měsícem

      Hi, no I wouldn't calculate an inferior line in a real game as it's a waste of time (it's hard enough calculating good lines). I meant calculating/playing around with variations during analysis - exploring a little further beyond the puzzle if it throws up interesting positions. Also many puzzles stop too short because there could be multiple good moves often these are worth exploring a little too.

    I'm an 1800 OTB fide, i'm 26 i just started to take chess seriously.. i started just studying chess two weeks ago.. never opened a chess book before and i already started to see that i was always relying on tactical skills and instincts never studied opening theory or endgames nothing.. now that i'm putting on the work.. just 2 weeks and i'm starting to see things differently.. its a science that needs to be treated as serious as it should to get to master levels or even grand masters.. i honestly feel like if you have the dedication and you feel like you're picking up things fast you can level up your game to a point you won't ever dream about

    2:25 I'm usually not trying to analyse the moves, but at least shortly consider changes in the position and potential motifs, because for me it's quite hard to visualise the position 3+ moves ahead. Like for example 1.. hxg5 opens line for potential mating attack 3.. Qf5 brings queen closer with potential infiltration through f3 4. Qc2 loses control of f3 and so on

    • @benedictineonchessable
      @benedictineonchessable Před měsícem

      Hello, thank you for the intelligent comment! I know what you mean. I think the main thing in visualisation training though is in having the power to HOLD the position in your head. As you say you find it hard visualising the position 3+ moves ahead. This is very normal. The vast majority of us amateurs do. I would just focus on visualising the position during visualisation training. Forgot about the tactics and patterns as you can train that separately and that should be a main element of training... When you do more complex tactics/calculation training you put them both together and that's when you start to see dramatic results.

    • @Oleg72855
      @Oleg72855 Před měsícem

      @@benedictineonchessable I see your point, yeah it will certainly be harder to solve the final position just by visualising it, without noticing many of the motifs upfront. Which makes sense to do during visualisation training. Thank you for the advice.

      @benedictineonchessable Před měsícem

      @@Oleg72855 No worries, thank you for the comments. When you are calculating you need to consider absolutely everything - tactical, positional, evaluation etc. But in in training you have the advantage to be able to break things down into different components. This is where the different elements of training come in. This is the way I see it anyway. Nobody tells the professional sprinter in the gym during a heavy weights workout that they are not running very fast. It's not the point. If you see what I mean? Cheers.

    I'm more of a chess fan than an actual chess player, but for the case of "universal" systems, I have heard good things, from those who seem to know, about this "Side-Stepping Mainline Theory" book, I think from New in Chess, that has a 1... d6 black, with maybe Philidor/Old Indian/Black Lion kind of stuff, and I think 1.e4 ... 2.d3 mirror image for white against more or less everything. From the amazon samples, it seems to have lots of model games and plans. Although it looks way over my head, maybe good club players would like it? Maybe a review would be worthwhile?

    Did I ever tell you how "chess" got its name? (All the really good four letter words were already taken!) F^ck, or Sh#t, or D&mn is what adult improvers think, or even say, when they get SURPRISED. And "quantum of surprises" is the primary determinant of where on the chessic food chain a player resides. What Dan Heisman calls "Hope Chess" is like a hole in your bucket. Pouring in time & effort in the top is only effective if it exceeds the rate of leakage...
