From my first trip to the US and Tehachapi in April 1991 - and my first attempt at using a camcorder!
Here is an intermodal train rounding the loop with a nice mix of power.

Having been held to allow a Westbound to pass, this Eastbound BNSF stack train quickly gets into it's stride and attacks the climb to Tehachapi. Cruising downhill at the West end of Bealville siding near tunnel 2 is this freight of solid boxcars. I don't recall seeing too many trains made up solely of boxcars! Please like, share and subscribe - I will be uploading many more from the US, UK and other random countries as far back as 1991....

Really nice video. Fairly certain these were US Marine Corps - 4x4 Cougar MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles from 5th Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division returning to Camp Pendleton, CA from 11th iteration of the Marine Rotational Force - Darwin (MRF-D) in Australia.

Back in the day, ATSF use to run the "Wine Train" over Tehachapi several times per week. Consisting of a solid set of reefers and boxcars, headed for northern Calif. Pretty sure that BNSF still continues to run these trains, but less frequently.

one would think momentum would be everything when climbing these grades.i dont know much about trains.but momentum makes a huge difference in an 18 wheeler on big hills.
Would loved to have seen the ammeter on that dead hill start. Probably around five to six thousand amps minimum for all the engines together.

That begs the question: How are each locomotive's power output adjusted for best results? Do they all apply equal power? How do they do that?

Agreed it didn't sound like it to me either but as short as that train was maybe it wasn't all that heavy and they didn't need them.

Between 4000hp and 4400hp depending on the locomotive type.
those are considered heritage units to us from that era
This train is stored just outseide the ICTF yard in Long Beach
