The Reason We Fish is not simply about getting picked up on a live bait, the take on a dry fly, coming tight on the set or the screaming drag on that first run…all that is AWESOME but it’s not the complete reason we fish. This channel is dedicated to all that but we also fish for the life experience of being in God’s great creation. We highlight the sun rise at dawn in the middle of the ocean, being on a flat calm lake that mirrors the blue sky and clouds as we run to fishing grounds, the amazing sights and sounds that penetrate your soul at every destination we visit. It’s about spending time with friends, sharing the joy of an angler’s personal best catch, the various wildlife we see both on the water and on the land and creating memories with family. That’s what “The Reason We Fish” is all about and we invite you to join us as we bring your fishing passions alive.

The Boys are finding great meter marks of 80 - 100 lb. Bluefin fishing the edges of the Cortez Bank. The bite continues to build and the bigger units are deep, with anglers connecting on heavy jigs fluttering down to about 250 feet. Amazing stuff!

I have NEVER fished the American Angler, however......His reputation????? Is legendary. I hear him being brought up on EVERY long range trip I've taken, over the last 25 years. His dedication, to his clientele, as spoken of in fishing circles? Is second to none. Now, a dear friend of mine, who fished a VERY TIGHT private charter every August, has invited me i to thier extremely tight knit Asian group. I am BEYOND honored. In August 25, I will finally fish on the AA.

Conditions have certainly changed over the past few years. In regards to setups, especially now, since bluefin, has been around.
Try putting the rod on the right side and hold the reel with your left hand. Far more stable!
I think what's comfortable is most appropriate. I feel as you do (reel on the right side); however, I've watched a lot of vids where the captains, deck hands, and fishermen all say to do it as he does. I feel as if I have more cranking power if I do it as you have described. I'll have to go test out a few methods to see what's most comfortable.

I remember years ago fishing there on independence. We caught 70lbs to 100lbs yellowfin tuna. We also lost a few to the great white sharks.

I invented a handle for fighting on the rail! It has worked great so far on a bunch of Atlantic yft, seriously need to test it on the west coast! If you guys would use it I’d send you one!

@Captain Brain, Yes, I totally agreed, AA has the the best crews and customer service among the San Diego sportfishing fleet. I feel very comfortable fishing with AA.

I started fishing in 1992, and we only used mono, specially for surface iron. Are people afraid of getting spooled? I fish moon in 90% of the time for island fishing. Off shore, I use spectra and a 50 yard too shot. I still like the stretch.

Started fishing on the San Diego in 2015, IIRC. I learned more from Ryan and Matt than I have from any others combined. Incredible fisherman and work very hard to put their customers on the fish. Best boat in San Diego.
The east coasters use harnesses..we use the rail. I equate it to rifle hunting vs bow hunting.
This is the type of experience I’d like to have, they put such positive energy out there. I’d love to try to get on this boat in 2023
