The Hidden Story Behind Alfred Pennyworth
Few supporting characters appear more in Batman stories than Alfred Pennyworth. Across comics, tv shows, movies and more, Alfred always stands by Batman's side. You probably know him as the loyal, skilled, and caring father figure that shaped Bruce into who he would become. But few know the story behind his creation. On this episode of bat lessons we uncover his early history in comics and newspaper strips and then discover the surprising way Alfred is inspired by the same source material as archer, the lion king, clue, 007, john wick, black butler, and more. You don't want to miss it.

    Hey. How long did it take you to print enough parts for a shelf? I just need an estimate

    • @batlessons
      @batlessons Před 37 minutami

      I don’t recall honestly, it’s been a while. Not terribly long. A day or two max, depending on how frequently you pull stuff off the plate and start the next print.

  • @thefalsekingslayer3717

    I was always of the understanding that is not really known who wrote what with early Batman? Writers were almost never credited

    • @batlessons
      @batlessons Před dnem

      You're right, credit can be really hard to work out in the Golden Age. *Especially* artists. The very first year has better record for a few reasons. The volume was much lower - Just Detective Comics, no "Batman" book, no "Worlds Finest". Interviewers and historians who spoke to the creators of the time were particularly interested in the very beginning. And there were just far fewer people involved. Bill Finger, Shelly Moldoff, Jerry Robinson, Gardner Fox (and a few more) all came to work directly in Bob Kane's apartment. Writers and artists wouldn't move to the bullpen and report to editors at National (DC) for a few years. I *believe* Fox, Finger, and Whitney Elsworth are all on record about Fox taking over for these issues. It's definitely covered in the 1971 book "History of Comics" by Steranko, and I believe it's also covered in Thom Andrae's 2011 "Creators of the Superheroes". Both of those books had authors working from primary sources and interviews. 1999's "Batman: The Complete History" also covers Fox writing these issues, though my understanding is he did not personally interview Golden Age creators as the other authors did. I think this is generally accepted fact, even as credit on other golden age stories is lost to the ages. We talk about these subjects in depth on our full episodes. If you're interested check it out!

    (Apologies if this is a redundant comment: I was almost done with a comment, and accidentally brushed against the icon for another video, which diverted e from your page...). Thanks for another entertaining and informative episode. Two thoughts. FIRST: Of all the newspapers you could have chosen in your hypothetical to talk about the differences between dailies and Sunday strips you chose the NY Times -- A paper that has famously never had a comics page. Still, it was a hypothetical, so maybe you were descriping a hypothetical alternate universe where the Times has an EXTENSIVE Funnies section... SECOND: I found the description referring to Alfred as "Batman's bat man" quite interesting, and I wonder if it was coined as a play on the traditional phrase used to describe a valet/butler: a "Gentleman's gentleman." Keep up the good work.

    • @batlessons
      @batlessons Před dnem

      I should have been better prepared with example papers! Growing up the option of newspaper was the Kansas City Star or the Kansas City Star. Interesting thought regarding "Gentleman's gentleman", there's a definite parallel there. We'll include this in our next corrections and feedback episode for sure! 🦇

    You guys talked a little about the Batman Dailies. For Christmas in 2006 my grandparents bought me the collection book of all the Batman dailies from 43-46. Because of the dailies (along with Nolan’s movies) I’m a Batman fan. I remember reading them on my grandparents couch under a lamp in the corner of the living room reading and being fully invested in the stories. I even read these during the summer of 2007 and 2008 during the hyping up of the dark knight. It felt like being a kid from that era experiencing Batman stories for the first time. If it wasn’t for the dailies I wouldn’t have become a huge batman fan.

      @@batlessons I forget the names of the story arcs names but the stories I loved was the one where a serial killer was terrorizing a theater and the actors. Another one of course was where Batman got shot and on the verge of death and a cop dresses as him while investigating a gang in the woods (won’t spoil what happens to him). That one has one of my favorite conclusions where the gang leader thinks Batman is a ghost and starts freaking out.

    Stan Lee used to talk about this. It was easier to place the characters in New York because the publishing industry was centered there. Most artist didn't know what middle America looked like. It was also essential for publishing itself. If you ran up against a deadline, you could finish in the bullpen and have it to print in 3 hours. You also didn't need to explain that large cities have crime. It was common knowledge. With places like Manhatten and San Francisco having communities from around the world. You could have exotic crime. Unfortunately, it happened during post war years, so it was very racist.

  • @DarthArachnious
    @DarthArachnious Před 11 dny

    I've never dug into it, but the trope of the actor turning into a criminal, usually a master of disguise. Pops up a lot in Golden Age radio. Specifically, there's a surviving episode of Nick Carter: Master Detective. And an episode of The Shadow in which they're looking for an actor who can disguise himself, hiding in plain sight. I've often wondered if there's an original play or Penny Dreadful that featured this. The other fun trivia about this is. 'The Terror', the movie that Basil Karlo was famous for, is a real lost silent movie.

  • @DarthArachnious
    @DarthArachnious Před 11 dny

    The misconception is that he carries a gun. He always picks up a gun off the floor after he beats up the criminals. He gets a gun to shoot The Monk in that story. But he doesn't have it when he's fighting the wolves. So it isn't standard issue with his utility belt. There are a few splash pages where he's got a holster, but that's never in the story.

    Hi, great video. Unfortunately both Tweedledee and Tweedledum never became big deals in comics, i remember Len Wein (creator of Wolverine and Swamp Thing that had a very good run on Batman in the 70's) said in a interview that he had a pitch for a Batman story with them but he was never given the possibility to publish it by DC, a real shame since the guy wrote some of the very best stories involving B or C list Batman villains like Signalman, Calendar Man or Crazy Quilt. I would say that now that there's Mad Hatter having another Alice in Wonderland themed villain may seem kinda redundant. I think they work well as Mad Hatter's henchmen and that they are basically his opposite: they know they aren't the real Tweedledee and Tweedledum but accept the gimmick cause it's fun and they are amused by it. As for the Lewis Carroll's part i'll play a bit the devil's advocate: even though Carroll's behaviour seems at least creepy by today's standards it must be said that none of the girls Carroll ever talked with has ever spoken badly about him, the real Alice always talked about him as a sort of non related uncle, even her son said that she never said anything bad about him. Moreover we got access to Carroll's diaries and doesn't seem they contain any trace of sexual interest in Alice or any other girl. More probably Carroll was a very shy guy. It is known of his very bad case of stutter to the point that if someone asked his name he replied with "Dododgson" (he even made fun of himself for this by inserting himself in the first Alice book as the Dodo) and that this problem disappeared where he was in presence of girls, maybe he simply didn't feel judged when he spoke to them (and this could also explain why on the other hand he despised boys by labeling them as nasty and rude). P.S. i know italian names can be difficult to pronunce but Brian came closer 😂. Sorry for the behemoth of a message and the clunky language.

    52:39-52:57 So you said that “The Man Who Laughs” was lost for decades, but what you describe here is similar to how Stan Lee wrote the Thing and Alicia Masters’s romance (though I think Ben did let Alicia touch his face).

    • @batlessons
      @batlessons Před měsícem

      You're right, they do bear a similarity! Stan Lee /could/ have seen the film, he was 6 years old when it came out and we never searched /when/ the movie fell into obscurity. The tropes remain even in the movie's absence, however."The Man Who Laughs" novel was perhaps more famous in it's own right (at the time) and "Phantom of the Opera" deals in many of the same themes, seeing much greater theatrical success in Stan Lee's era. Thanks for listening! 🦇

    Just listened to this episode and here are a few thoughts: (1) The original reports of Springheel Jack reminds me quite a bit of the descriptions of the "Mothman" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothman#:~:text=Mothman%2C%20in%20West%20Virginian%20folklore,Creature%20... I know how much you love Wikipedia); (2) In the two chapters you excerpted, where Springheel Jack seems more of a prankster, he reminds me a lot of Steve Ditko's Creeper; (3) Regarding the word "Fortean": It's derived from the name of Charles Fort, who published four books at the beginning of the 20th Century. He spent his life going to the NY Public Library, combing through periodicals, and cataloguing anomalous phenomena like frogs falling from the sky, strange lights in the sky (this is pre-UFOs), etc.

On the female reporter angle I recently read a 1940 book by the original Nancy Drew author which featured her newspaper go-getter reporter girl main character Penny Parker, who has her own lesser known detective series. The trope was very prevalent, in the 40s and I am sure there are plenty of other forgotten examples from the period.
