Very rare footage of a supersonic flight done few weeks ago at speeds around MACH 1.6-1.7. With naked eyes, they can be seen much better. The camera does not help much... Shockwaves are very hard to see, and it is better if you use a good laptop screen. Outstanding walkaround of Kelly Johnsons magnificent early 1950s Starfighter-one of many masterpieces conceived of by he and Lockheed. It boggles the mind what was achieved using mathematics, physics and a slide rule. Absolutely stunning.
It would be cool to see them mount a GE F-414 in a Starfighter, about five thousand pounds of extra thrust and 1,300 pounds less weight from the engine. It would give the F-104 a big step up in performance.

I am a private pilot and a NASA propulsion engineer at KSC working on the Artemis Space Launch System. I have a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master's Degree in Space Systems, and 8 years of experience working with ground and flight hardware. I am very passionate and self-driven and feel that I could be value added towards maintaining, testing, operating and piloting the Starfighters. How come none of these civilian jet fighter aircraft don't have the HUD systems? They have to be demilitarized, no weapons, I get that. As someone who has some former flight training and listening to God knows how many more experienced pilots opinions, isn't having a HUD better than not because you can keep your eyes outside of the cockpit instead of in?
afaik the f104 does not have a modern hud (like airspeed and altitude), but only a reticule.
Saw these flying with the Turkish AF back in the mid 80's while TDY with my C-130... Beautiful aircraft... Well done..
