KORG DW-6000 : The Jam

Personally I think that the Korg DW-6000 is one of the most underrated synths from the mid-80s, largely due to the fact that the Korg factory presets are absolute garbage. Here is a set created by AnalogAudio1 which really bring this synth to life. Just added a small amount of hall reverb, otherwise what you hear on the video is exactly what came out of the DW-6000. Stay tuned for the repair vi...

    So good, I love the dw8000, im legit sitting next to it in the studio... Korg really should do another fullsize run of the dw8000, multi timbrality would have been really the only thing i would want added, along with sick surface controls obviously.

    too bad the digital oscillator/analog filter concept wasn't explored a little longer. it had a brief window in the mid 80s, then affordable sampling came along and that was that. this was really the last period of real synthesizers.

    Great work - had one of these from a fire damage sale and it had issues different to yours but still took a while to get it there. Having a 2nd working unit to reference is invaluable. And yes the keyboard assembly/disassembly was a royal pita. But I now have two working so can stack or run them in true stereo for that huge Oberheim sound.

    You should have used solder wik that sucks the solder up. That way you could have replaced the LCD's in a flash. even if they where not defective. But you also should have removed all those wires prior to that. to prevent all that damage. These displays almost never fail, it's the wiring or the drivers (IC's)

  • @Marrro

    Interesting video - congratulations on the repair. I suspect that another problem that may arise with equipment of this age is the electrolytic capacitors - it is best to preemptively replace all of them so that they do not spill and cause more damage in the future....

      First of all I'm not a professional, I don't get paid for any of this, and no...I don't make any money whatsoever from. the ads that Google is imposing on all of us. I don't always catch everything on video unfortunately, but I also assume that certain things will be fairly simple for people to figure out. Replacing the battery is pretty simple, just unsolder the old one (carefully...don't strip or pull the traces off), then get yourself an inexpensive 2032-style battery holder for the 3.3V flat battery that you can buy just about anywhere. There is a positive that is clearly marked on the circuit board, you can see it clearly at the 28:38 mark. On those battery holders, the positive is at the top, so just colder the adapter in place of the old battery and make sure you insert the new battery in the correct direction. All in all it's pretty straightforward, but if you have other more complicated issues I'll try to help if I can. Alternatively you can also request for a video with more detailed explanation, although when I can get around to doing it depends on my schedule etc.

    • @StevenBardo
      @StevenBardo Před 2 měsíci

      @@kayslabs First of all ? You making money on the video is irrelevant. I do not need help on buying a battery or diagnosing the issue and no did I ask you about the need to buy at battery where it is or what type or how much they are or even about the clip. My comment was based on the fact you did not show removal of the circuit board. [ the 3 screws on the midi i/o was the part I missed]. That was the part that I needed to see. My apologies if I have bruised your ego. Assume? What that every person that watches your video is a certified repair tech and have worked on the Matrix 6? There will be no request.

    Lots of keyboards from this era have unpopulated slots, components, even connector pins. Minor improvements were often made to circuit designs during the production run of an instrument - The JX-8P is a good example of this. That resistor under the CPU board of the broken unit looks factory. Also, even though you cleaned the surface of the board underneath the EPROM and SRAM chips (IC2 and 3), the traces are still quite corroded. Have you checked continuity on all of them? Regardless, that corrosion will progress and is likely to cause future problems, even IF the traces are still providing continuity today. I would remove those sockets again (sorry!) and use a scalpel to scrape back ALL the dark corroded areas under IC2 and 3 and around C35, etc. until you see only clean bare copper (a fiber glass brush is also helpful). Any broken traces should be repaired with bare wire + solder and then all of the scraped traces should be rechecked then resealed with conformal coating. Other questions: Do the PSU rails test as they should under load? Is IC1 getting power, clock and reset as it should? Are IC 2 and 3 getting power? Use an oscilloscope to probe the critical pins on IC1, 2, and 3 on your working unit and then check the bad unit. That spill could have caused a short and damaged an IC or 2 as well. Good luck!!!

    A better way to repair this kind of damage is to get AWG 30 Kynar wire and a stripper for it. Don't try to solder to very fine traces. Solder to pins of IC's, vias, and leads of components. It will be much more reliable. Also, the service manual for the M6 is available on the web and would show the connections to the EPROM. No need to figure it out from another board.

  • @mudi2000a
    @mudi2000a Před 5 měsíci

    Regarding the unpopulated seats of the board, maybe the keyboard shares the board with the DW-8000 and the parts are only present in that model.
