Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant returned to XFM, the alternative London-based radio station in September 2001 after the first series of The Office had been broadcast. Due to the phenomenal success of the show, Ricky was important enough to now be given his own producer, one Karl Pilkington. Although Karl was hired to just "press the buttons", Ricky and Steve got him involved more and more with the show over the subsequent weeks and soon became fascinated with his personal life, unconventional childhood and ridiculous stories. By the end of the first season Karl had become a crucial part of the show's success.

Perrfek just wat the doctor ordered. 🤝cheers
The James Lipton "what would you want God to say to you" question comes up a couple of time over the XFM / Podcast run, and it strikes me as such a bizarre question every time. I don't blame Karl for being stumped, I have no clue how I'd answer that, even if I were a believer.
About Karl's story on throwing the baby out with the bathwater: that actually is a real tradition in either China or Japan (can't recall) The father bathes first, then the sons in descending order of age, then the Mother, then the daughters in the same order as the sons. All with the same water. Absolutely mental tradition of course, but it's certainly real.
I wonder how all three of em didn't realize the head cut off blinking guy did 32 blinks and this head cut off guy walking a line did 32 steps 😂 that's how you know it was bs and most likey the same person told/gave both stories to karl
I'm with Karl on this, I've never heard of High meaning smelly
Karl's postal story gets me every time I hear it, 74 year old lost letter "I hope it isn't urgent" 😂
Rhys Latham - the man, the legend, the myth that is Man Moth! 🎉❤
48:52 "The Ricky Gervais Bug" 😂
That Candy Perfume Girl woman sounded so fucking smug.
47:38 Karl losing it, and Steve getting pissed, Rick's sarcasm. Classic.❤️❤️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Still listening in ❤
You forgot to give yourself a clever name related to the show.
It's a shame this is Man Moth's 'missing' episode, since it's actually one of the best.
Cannot believe I didn't know I had been missing out this episode
All you lucky people who never realised that there had been a copyright strike against Man Moth’s channel, for this episode, are no doubt listening to this for the first time. 🎉😂 Not happy with the copyright strike against Man Moth to be honest.😮
Play a record
“the kid’s fine!?” - I don’t know why, but SMerch saying that at 15:20 is just too funny for me
Spudhead
Thanks for uploading this! After all these years I've found a new episode that I've never heard before 😁
But they had webbed hands not feet
'The money you don't make you save not having to get someone else to do the chores' - makes perfect sense to me.
The phrasing is confusing as fuck lol, but I get what he's saying. A better phrasing would be something like "The money you save by doing DIY yourself makes up for the lower wages"
Wow after 5 years of listening to these I only just realised that this episode wasn't on mammoths channel. This is like Xmas morning all over again
Blew my mind when I realised the parrot thing wasn’t a conversation they had off-air.
I'm in exactly the same boat, weird innit
You’re so lucky! This feels part of the routine. Manmoth up to season 2 ep 1, quick dip over here for ep 2, then back to the moth
I love how Steve is proved so wrong here. Ricky wins the boxing fight and Steve in the podcasts says he would murder someone if it was the last day on earth. As Karl suggests absolute psychopath.
Inserting obligatory Man Moth comment here
Pre or post phone? Lol
Forgive me Man Moth, for I have sinned
Explain this comment please 🙏

Why doesn't man moth have this
Forgive me man moth for I have sinned
Ah.. time for the classic pilgrimage over to RhysLatham's channel :)
I'm sorry but high and dry does NOT work. dry doesn't explain why she can't have a wash, just the result of not washing. Ricky is talking sh*te on this one.
"It was a one time thing Man Moth, and I was thinking of you the whole time"
I used to think the band's name was Hack a Lung by the way Karl says it
That caller is clearly ‘High & Dry’
Back here on a summers morning 2021
I like to miss this one out from my regular listens through, so I only listen to it once ever 2 or 3 listens through. That way I always have a new sounding one in the bag for rainy days
yup, were still cheating on man moth.
These are still gold
Apologies Man Moth
36:53 Is that Dicky Anderson?
Dicky Docky Doo
Whoops, it automatically loaded this up. Im coming back Man Moth, sorry.
Hahaha that's fucking funny lol
This is about my 15th time through and I only just realised I have never heard episode 2 because I let ManMoth play them back to back.....so excited!
The high and dry by radiohead guy is dicky anders
@@chairmanmeow8388 how do you know?
He did a q&a on a forum on Facebook a few years ago.
@@chairmanmeow8388 thank you mate!
@Darren Lock Clips Official Take it with a pinch of salt. The guy on fb could have been lying but I'd like to think it is. Listen to him again in this episode and he does sound a bit like Ricky's impression of what he thinks he'd sound like in a later episode.
Karl "And the doctor says" Pilkington.
Sorry ManMoth brb
6 years of listening and I think this is my first time for this one! Overjoyed
Surprisingly that parents blood thing is a real story.
Arun Krishnamurthy yeah I read the news report, the girl had polio, neither doctor said that the parrots blood actually helped but the girl made a recovery. The way Karl tells the stories never helps 😂😂
@@Robp787 from the story I read the doctor did mistakenly hear it was parrots blood. Of course the original report could be incorrect. Here's two sources from 1931 reporting the story: cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=HT19310131.2.8&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN--------1 cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=SBS19310127.1.1&srpos=2&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN-%22parrot%27s+blood%22-------1
...Man moth. Please i can explain.
Sorry Man Moth
36:43 "it's a bigger song than candy sweet girl" always cracks me up
