What happened to the Luftwaffe? | Aerial warfare on D-Day
The Allies knew that the Normandy landings would be an era defining moment. Succeed and victory in the war was surely theirs. Fail, and the consequences could be catastrophic. Thus, well before D-Day took place, the Allies planned to use their Air Power to the set the stage for the landings.
In the last episode of our D-Day series we covered the fighting at Sea. This time IWM curator Hattie Hearn looks at the aerial battle for Normandy. How did the Allies win air superiority? Where was the German response to D-Day? And how did Allied air power affect the fighting on the ground?

The arms race between air attack and air defence

The course of warfare throughout the 20th century has been dominated by air power. From the early biplanes of the First World War to the massed bomber formations of the Second, air power has been used to scout and attack enemy forces, dominating the theatre of war. This has led to an arms and technology race between air attack, and air defence. Following the Second World War, and later into the...

The most important naval action seen during the First World War was, of course, the Battle of Jutland. The date was the 31st May 1916. A trap had been set by the Germans. Just off the coast of Jutland in Denmark, the largest nautical battle of the First World War was about to take place. The battle, involving 100,000 men and 250 ships, would last close to 2 days. But who threw the first punch? ...

If "Hitler feared a war on two fronts, particularly with the United States" why did Hitler declare war on the US, and the US didn't enter the war on the side of the allies. The US declared war on Japan. Germanys declaration of war on the US did the rest.

  • @NorthernIrishCitizensAlliance

Rewriting history to suit an expansionist narrative, justifying proxy incursions, ethnic cleansing, genocide, providing safe havens and proxy violence, is unfortunately not uncommon. Even on our own doorstep, the Republic of Ireland have totally rewritten and sanitised, not only Dublin's part in Irish history, but also foolishly inserted a part of this fictionalised version of history, into their constitution and national anthem. As evidence for all to see and verify their abuse of history. "A Nation Once Again" or “reunification” are fictional, concepts, fantasy, nonsense statements, as there was never a sovereign Southern Irish government that governed Ulster, now called Northern Ireland. Ulster or Britain have been the only two historical rulers of Ulster. Ulster was independent kingdom before being subdued and ruled by the British, conquered centuries after our Southern Irish neighbours. “A Nation Once Again” for Ulster, now unfortunately called Northern Ireland, would be independence, should it eventually decide to split with the UK. Definitely not the disaster that unification would bring, as incessantly promoted by the Republic of Ireland and used frequently as a justification for proxy violence and disruption.

By the time of the invasion, many of the so called "Experten", the German term for the fighter-aces, were either KIA or woundet in the hospitals. The first 6 month of the year in the" "Reichsverteidigung " had been extreamly brutale and was finaly taking its toll. A squardron were usualy led by 2 or 3 old hands, the rest were fresh young lads, with 10-15 hours in the 109 or 190 's. The accidents and crashlandigs were as high as 50 procent for some Squadrons. Most airfields they were send to had concrete runways. Something most of the new pilots were unfamiliar with. The result was a disaster.
