How IMAX Tricks You
We're back! This time I wanted to look at the world of IMAX. I've always wondered what makes a "true" IMAX movie, and what that even means. Lemme know if you want to see more videos like this.

I live in NYC, so I've seen true IMAX at the AMC Lincoln SQ.
We used to have an IMAX attraction in Las vegas. The screen was 7 stories tall and had lapbars. Now we have the msg sphere
I prefer AMC Dolby Cinema
Yes, it is just marketing. I have stumbled over this marketing trick too, when I fall into a rabbit hole about cameras and aspect ratios
For home video releases, I hate the cinema scope (21:9) and prefer digital imax. 1.9:1 fills more of my tv's screen (16:9). I would even go 'back' to screen with a 5:3 ratio
My parents took me and my sister to the Franklin institute IMAX in 2008 to see the dark Knight, when the explosion went off I pissed in my pants it was so loud. I was 8 so I was really embarrassed, I watched the whole rest of the film with piss in my pants hoping nobody would notice. 😂 Just thought I'd share my first true IMAX experience.
hahaha! that's amazing - honestly the dark knight is worth sitting through that. I imagine the IMAX experience was incredible
@@GalaxyBrainVideo Wild to think about now, glad I didn't leave because of piss pants because in retrospect I was very lucky to have my first IMAX experience be "real" IMAX. Would love to go back someday, highly recommend if you're every in Philadelphia. Just avoid the middle row, I think that's where I left my mark.
Informative video! However, you didn’t mention the 4th version of IMAX: Dual-Laser/GT IMAX. These are about as rare as 70mm IMAX venues, but they project a 1.43:1 that is technically of a higher standard quality than even 70mm IMAX (which has an untapped level of quality not exactly quantifiable, to my understanding). These are the venues films like DUNE should be experienced on, whereas 70mm IMAX prints are a novelty.
oh wow! didn't actually know that - gonna look into this more. Thanks for sharing
@@GalaxyBrainVideo I have actually been to both a GT IMAX and 70mm IMAX venue (BOEING IMAX at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, WA, and the Indiana State Museum IMAX respectively) and really neither format is absolutely better than the other. I prefer film for the texture and history of the prints that accumulate over time. I saw Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX during its initial run, and then again about 7 months later, and the print by then had so many scratches and dust spots. It’s beautiful to see what can change in time. But in terms of seeing a full 1.43:1 picture in flawless quality, a GT IMAX cannot be beaten.
There's less than 20 true IMAX theatres in the US.
You think 4DX is becoming more popular? I wonder if it will ever top IMAX in terms of popularity.
yeah I'm not sure. I think IMAX will always have the advantage due to how much directors love using it. I haven't really heard any people in film talk much about 4DX - so I think IMAX will remain the premium format for now
Great video! Another point to add is that some of the “Experience it in IMAX” films actually crop off the sides to fit the 1.90:1 IMAX screens, meaning that you pay more to see less of the movie!
oh wow that's crazy - didn't even think about that!
Funniest IMAX experience for me was this year when watching Dune part 2. The screen was so small, that the film frame can be seen on the floor. 🤦♂🤦♂
Oppenheimer on 70mm film was something to witness saw it at the Chinese theater incredible way to watch a movie if u ever get the chance do it
yeah I watched Oppenheimer in 70mm here in Canada, incredible experience. I'm excited for the re-release of interstellar as well
Hey, this was a great video breaking down a subject that not many know about! I used to run premiere events in theaters and we did one in IMAX and they are SUPER cagey about letting outsiders see the inside of their systems, despite the fact one of the techs basically revealed that it’s just a normal Christie projector in a fancy box with an IMAX logo on it… 😂 Glad this video came across my feed. Well researched and presented, and I loved the graphics work. Bravo! I’d suggest grabbing a lav mic or something though as the audio was very distracting. The fact I kept watching through that says a lot though. Great work! Oh, and it might be worth experimenting with your lighting a bit to darken your background. Might make you pop out from the frame a bit more. Keep it up! Subscribed!
I am happy to be fortunate enough to be close to one of the few true imax theaters with both a 70mm film and laser projectors. To watch a movie filmed for it is insanely special.
imax is way too big to my liking, it's so big it's almost impossible to see everything on the screen. I'm ok with a normal screen and a good sound, I can enjoy more of a movie.
One of my local IMAX theaters has the biggest 70mm screens in Southern California. While my local AMC IMAX is the digital IMAX format that Marvel Studios loves to use.
Here in Brazil we currently have 13 IMAX theaters across our 27 states. Only one has the new Laser system and none have a 1.43:1 screen. The one in my state opened at the end of 2016 with the release of The Force Awakens. This one has a slightly smaller screen than the Cinemark XD theater nearby that I went to. The audio is for sure not properly calibrated at times, being hurtfully loud, and the only acceptable seats are the middle ones. And yet, the experience is 1000 times better than any other available here. The regular ones have terribly low sound. I can literally hear people eat their popcorn like they are sitting next to me. The so-called "LieMAX" is far from the original intent, but it still beats any other theater. (We don't have Dolby Cinema in Brazil, so I can't attest to that)
I used to go to the one at the Milwaukee museum of nature history
Assuming Oppenheimer released on 3000 plus screens, the 25 Imax 70mm screens is like .8% of all screens available in the US, the money made from Imax 70mm counts for 2% of the 1 billion it made. normal 70mm screens added another $14 million, so 3.5% of the money made came from this format. I personally think studios will have to use it more often because like it or not, imax is synonymous with premier moviegoing. there is a chance they expand the amount of theaters capable to allow more 70mm/Imax70mm prints. movies are becoming theater, that means bigger shows (hopefully better too) and higher prices for tickets.
That’s some bad vocal-fry, Harry.
In Guatemala we only have one IMAX screen. Of course it isn't 70mm. I maynever experience true IMAX
We don’t rly have imax where I am. But we have a similar thing called maxx. But the screen is MUCH larger than a normal one. And it’s a better experience than the standard one too (mostly cuz they turn the volume up a little louder than the regular rooms so you can hear so much stuff going on)
There are only around 90 theathres in the US that are truly "IMAX" They have them listed in their own website the rest are liemax
I remember when I was young and IMAX felt like more of a novelty cinema experience in the 80’s and 90’s. They didn’t show any big movies in it. Just special documentaries. In the mid-2000’s when they started to put big blockbusters on it, I remember thinking it was the best way to watch the films. The IMAX theater in Sacramento, CA I used to go to just had superior sound and if you got the right seat (because seating really mattered for a movie on such a big display), then you were in for a wonderful experience. In particular, I remember watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It blew me away. I didn’t even think about how the film wasn’t filmed for IMAX or anything like that. It just felt larger than life and immersive. I think because of those core memories with an actual IMAX theater, I can tell right away when I go into these “IMAX” screens at other theater chains, that it isn’t the “real” thing. It’s still fun, but there’s a stark difference. Anyway thank you for making this video and pointing out all the differences!
Alien Romulus says 'Experiencd It in IMAX' but has expanded ratio. The reason it doesn't say 'Filmed For IMAX' is because it wasnt shot with IMAX-approved cameras, despite it having the expanded ratio
1) compelety left out imax with laser which can do 1:43.1 on a gt screen with 2 projectors. 2) Digital imax is still 26 % bigger which is a good thing. sure dual laser and 15/70mm will always be 40 % bigger but numbers of screens are less 3) out of 2000+ imax theatres 30 + are 15/70 and 40 (apporx) are dual laser. yes they are still less but its improving 4) digital dmr aka experince it imax flims had a value until dolby cinema. 5) imax is doing a terrible job in differnincating the movies. alien romulus had exclusive aspect ratio yet it got experince in imax poster, so did rrr. Sure the flimed/ formatted for imax is there but its still very inconsisent
I’m privileged to live in the Toronto area one of the few places in the world with True IMAX cinemas seeing films like Dune/oppenheimer in 70MM projected on those large format screen’s is awe inducing and has made me a keen eye in discerning Liemax screens whenever I’m in a theatre outside the city I don’t even waste my time anymore because I know the extra fee isn’t juice worth the squeeze
I live around Toronto as well! I like going to the square one theatre. The cinesphere was great too - excited for it to come back
Besides the Cinesphere, where else has true IMAX in Toronto?
a shot for every time Taylor says "IMAX" interesting video, tho.
BLASPHEMY 😅 But to be fair, there is a big difference between Dune Part 2 and a standard film in a lot of different ways. But in general I usually save IMAX screenings for films that I either know will have a great soundtrack or you just want to see on a big screen with a big audio system.
imax is the new 3D, not every movie needs imax
You didn’t address imax laser 4K which can display 1:43:1 ratio and is slowly replacing the 2k xenon projectors in compatible 1:43:1 theatres and the theatres which have a 1:90:1 screens can also get a single 4K laser projector
How did you get the 1.43:1 imax ratio shots of oppenheimer?
Those IMAX shots are cropped to fit in a 1.43:1 format. If you want to find uncropped 1.43:1 IMAX shots of Oppenheimer, there's an IMAX Trailer (exclusive trailer that was shown in IMAX theaters) that is available as a special feature from the 4K Blu-ray copy of Oppenheimer. From the bonus disc to be specific. You can find download links somewhere on the internet, but i'm not exactly sure where.. I would start searching for the trailer on reddit threads :)
@@orbit203is there anything like that for interstellar?
@@SwithinFeely There isn’t sadly.
There is LieMax, Digital IMAX, 70MM IMAX.
This was super insightful! Thanks!
Fun fact to make things even more complicated: just because it's 70mm film doesn't mean it's IMAX. Some theatres (like the Scotia Bank Cineplex in Montreal) will offer a 70mm projection that is NOT IMAX.
You can shoot also shoot on regular 65mm (70mm film for projection) which takes the film vertically, as imax takes the 70mm film horizontally.
@@PierrePotonnier exactly! Though even just shooting in 70mm alone is rather difficult and stupid expensive
I love this video! Instant sub! May I suggest getting a mic, your video quality is so high that it deserves great audio!
Great video on the subject! I'm lucky to be able to go to the IMAX in Melbourne, Australia ("True IMAX", 70mm projectors, the whole deal). Absolutely my preferred cinema to go to. Have only been going there since I saw Dune 1, but have been able to see things like a Dark Knight Trilogy marathon, original Blade Runner and 2049 back to back, Avatar 2 in 4k 48fps 3D, (which isn't available for home viewing), and I'm seeing Interstellar soon. I would 100% recommend to anyone, go to a 1.43:1 IMAX screen at least once (if reasonable to get there). A note on Dune Part 2 being available to watch on 70mm and Digital, while Dune 1 and 2 were shot digitally, they were both transferred to film and then scanned back to digital. So visually they would be nearly the same (when viewed on the same screen at the same ratio of course).
fyi, if your movie sucks, it will sucks no matter what! if your movie is good, getting a big screen or a bigger screen not actually make that much of a different. NO ONE in the world can tell the metric of enjoyment differences watching DUNE 2 from regular cinema than imax
Great video!! This really portrays how marketing makes a difference in movie industry… there’s something else with imax and it is in projectors: xenon, laser, and digital all make a huge difference
No wonder I never understood the fuzz about IMAX, most of it is just slightly bigger screens.
I’ve only ever seen Laser projected IMAX in 1.43:1(approximately) at PaciSci but I’m certain the laser projectors provide a different (imho better) experience than the digital projectors even when projecting similar screen sizes.
The problem with American Politics is that everyone takes everything so seriously. That kind of makes sense, but when all news programs are indistinguishable from the theatrics of something like Good Morning Football or ESPN's First Take, it draws viewers AND politicians into an enticing web of demonization cloaked as fun yet intellectually stimulating debate.

Some of my friends talk about this IMAX, Dolby surround sound and other things. But all they watch is Multiverse of madness and Madame Web in those "liemax" 🤣
