      @DustinBrett Před 18 dny

      It would require lots of different things. You'd need some kind of auth on a backend, and this app is client side only currently. You could use API's like Google's Auth. Currently my app does not support this, but it's possible.

    Truly amazing work my friend. Inspiration to many including myself with this, absolutely love pushing the limits of web browsers! My question as a bit of a noob. Is this customisable at all so that I'm able to spin up my own "lite" version of this that I could populate with my own data?

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett Před 21 dnem

      Thank you very much! Indeed it is totally customizable. The source code is linked in the video description and is itself a "lite" version of my site because I have already done my own customizations on the source for my personal website. The main idea is that you customize what is in the "public" folder which decides the settings and files that will be part of the final build. And further customization happens at the user level when they visit the site because all changes are persisted locally in the browser via IndexedDB.

    It's just amazing watching you! I wanted to ask you if you didn't go to college how did you got jobs? And what you as a software engineer think of this whole 'Ai is gonna eat jobs' stuff which is going on. I'm asking this because I'm 18 and this year I'm going to university (college). My priorities are computer science CS and AI, so I'll get graduated in 2028. Answer keeping the future in mind. Thanks

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett Před 28 dny

      Thanks very much! I got jobs by getting my foot in the door while also starting from the "bottom". I found my first programming job through Craigslist when I moved to Vancouver. It requires a hustle attitude along with making your own opportunities when you don't have a degree to lean on. As for the AI concern, I think it won't eat our jobs for a very long time, but it also depends if your job is doing something that is on the edge of what is possible to automate or not. AI at the moment does not produce very good code and it makes up things all the time. It works ok in demos and for Todo style apps or code snippets, but when you have big apps that are common within companies, we still have a long way to go, maybe decades. But if you love the work than you will embrace AI as a tool to make you better and more productive, so either way it isn't close to replacing what a good & passionate software engineer can do. I think if you are going to go to school to learn something, it should be because you have a passion for the topic and want to build a career around it so you can do what you love and be proficient at it. I don't recommend studying something because you think it will make good money or that the jobs are there, because even if that is true, you should focus your life on doing what you love. I agree with the phrase, "Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life".

      Thanks very much! Feel free to email me also at dustinbrett@gmail.com, my messenger client on my site gets so much spam that I've had trouble making use of it for a while now. I don't have any coaching services, but that is a neat idea, maybe one day. As for advice on managing my daily routine and balancing my work and personal life, I don't have a ton of advice beyond my last comment. For me work and my personal life are one in the same and I am always juggling between them. My best advice for work is to find something you love doing and then you'll never "work" a day in your life. I don't have that perfectly implemented yet, but I do feel like I am on the right track. You need to follow the things in life that you find important and don't chase the priorities that other people tell you are important.

    Just to follow up my previous post... I think the icu*75.dll files in the latest WebKitRequirementsWin64 zip aren't working correctly. I got a fresh copy (icu4c-75_1-Win64-MSVC2022.zip) from the github icu pages. I replaced the 5 dll's with these fresh ones, and minibrowser lept into life.

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett Před měsícem

      Glad you got it working. I do find that some releases have issues, even though you'd think the CI is running tests. Usually one of the versions will work, but indeed it has had some outages of functionality.

  • @sambda
    @sambda Před měsícem

    As of mid-July 24, the method involving the WinCairo method doesn't seem to work properly, at least not for me (the latest versions of both zip files were used). The screen in the minibrowser remains blank, though resources seem to be being fetched OK. When the window is dragged across the screen, junk from what's underneath the browser window is shown instead - it's like the screen isn't refreshing properly. One in about 20 times, it'll work correctly, but mostly not - this seems to indicate there is some sort of race problem going on. I note from reading elsewhere that the Cairo library (a supposedly platform-independent graphics suite) is fraught with compatibility problems with quite a bit of different video hardware. Possibly there is some unadvertised requirement with video hardware/drivers, as both my Win10 machines are somewhat old in that regard? The Playwright method works OK (though seeming like a bit of a sledgehammer-to-crack-a-nut solution), as far as it goes, but I have noticed a couple of checked-to-be-valid Webp images on my sites come up as broken in it. The WinCairo method would be far superior if it could be made to work reliably, but there seem to be so many version-varying dependencies in the whole methodology that I fear that any minor version tweaks on its many components is always going to make it rather delicate. None of the .exe files are signed either (very amateurish), making Windows scream exceedingly loudly.

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett Před měsícem

      It is unfortunately not the most stable solution, and it would be much better if Apple would just release a Windows version which is pre-built fully or has an installer. I can see from your latest post that you got it working with some adjustment. Hopefully they will have the whole thing working again soon. I do plan to make another video about this in the near future, assuming it all is working again. I had it working a few weeks ago in preparation for making a new video, but I have been slow to actually make it. Thanks for the info.

      I personally enjoy the walk to the SkyTrain and the ride, but I've always thought "big city" life was fun. I don't like taking the bus though tbh. I am not sure if you mean "tight" like as in cool, or as in short on time. For time, I don't really have a schedule (besides meetings), so I come to work whenever, sometimes that means I get in at 9, other times 10:30, nobody is keeping track of times at my work so it's up to us to manage our time. I lived in Vancouver from 2015-2020 before I moved to Richmond, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, I lived in Yaletown.

    One question? I have seen your codebase why you are not using any external state management library any particular reason or its just that you dont need it?

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett Před měsícem

      Indeed I don't feel there is a need for a state management library. I find React Context to be very capable and the re-rendering is not a problem when the code is written to take it into consideration. If I were using a backend I would be more likely to consider a state management library to work with the API, possibly something like RTK Query.

  • @gabrielg9592
    @gabrielg9592 Před měsícem

    What a timely find. Unsurprisingly, I came here from your daedalOS project, which btw is insane, and i have been thinking about doing some travels. I'm also a software engineer, single and about to turn 30, and although I never left my native Brazil, one of my main interests in life is different cultures. I'm tired of my job (which tbh isn't really that bad, but anyways), I do have some money saved, but the golden handcuffs are pretty strong. I guess I'm afraid of spending money and regretting it later, and having a hard time getting my career going once again (the layoffs kinda made me change my mindset and try to play it safe). During the time you were travelling, did you fear about your career and future? Or was it something that you didn't even think about?

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett Před měsícem

      Thanks very much! For me my career was not something I was too concerned about, but when I left for my travels I was in IT and when I came back to Canada I started a whole new career in Software Engineering, based on my passions with computers as a kid. I would say that if you travel the way you want and have the experiences you've dreamed about while traveling, then there is no way you would regret it. When I left the world was a little bit different as far as layoffs and the general vibe of working. But I don't personally think that is a problem for someone who is willing to work hard and start from the bottom. It is indeed a risk to go and travel, but to me it's a bigger risk to play it safe in life, so it was an easy choice for me. I think if you believe in yourself and are willing to work hard, then almost anything is possible. And to me the most important thing in life is not regretting the "what if's" of what could be.

    I have a problem, that isn't directly a part of this guide, but I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere. I followed the guide to download the two zip-files, merged them and all that works great. But I am trying to debug a web application that uses authentication cookies, and for some reason the webkit browser will not create that cookie. Does anyone know how to enable all cookie-related functions in the webkit/minibrowser? I would be very grateful for any pointers.

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett Před 2 měsíci

      I am not sure why you are unable to make a specific cookie. I don't see much mentioned about this being an issue. I did some test and found cookie support worked. One thing I noticed is it required a refresh of the page to show the cookie in the Storage tab.

    Make the search box in and system wallpapers and settings app and all UWP apps and make microsoft edge browser in your website and make start button like windows10 and make recycle bin and taskbar large.

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for the suggestions. I have focused my energy on making apps which I use often such as Chrome instead of Edge, but one day perhaps there will be multiple options for all apps. Also the browser is partly fake anyway because of the limits of an . I had the start button as the Windows logo but was given a warning to take it down so I did. I've considered adding a recycle bin but because of the temporary nature of my sites file system it didn't seem important as of yet. I do plan to eventually have customizations such as via Settings or adjusting the taskbar. As for search it does search for quite a bit but not everything. You can set the wallpaper to any image you have and also I have some animated wallpaper options in the context menu.

    I'm a student at UBC majoring in CS and this gives me a very authentic insight into what my life in the future could be like and honestly does not look that bad. The work life balance seems to be very fair and you seem to spend a good amount of time with your kids. What position are you in and how long have you been working here?

      Happy to hear you found my video insightful, it is indeed an authentic look into a little slice of my life. Microsoft provides a great work-life-balance, and in general I am pretty good at finding a balance. Currently I am a front-end engineer (SE2) working on Viva Glint, which is survey software.

      I'm salaried so yes, and I work more than that some days. Also I work during my commute and some evenings. I do more than the 37.5 hours in my contract. At a job like mine, it's about what you do and not punching a clock.

      Basically like that video showed, 8 PM my kids go to bed and then I watch movies/tv while coding and reading stuff until 10-11 PM. I used to stay up till midnight-1 AM but I have been cutting back on that the last few months. I used to work on my side project every night, but it's been feeling pretty complete lately so I am looking for new inspiration.
