Hiljainen joululaulu,
hämyn haihtuva laulu.
Korkeella valot välkkyvät nään,
keskellä talven huurteen ja jään.
Joulu, oi joulu, auvoinen armas,
riemun täytenä luoksemme tullos!
Hiljainen joululaulu,
hämyn haihtuva laulu,
haihtuva laulu.
Unteni joululaulu,
sinihimmeä laulu.
Kiitävi sävel kahlimaton,
kaukana täältä ystävä on.
Joulu, oi joulu, suo riemus, rauhas,
onnenhetkien kirkasta kultaa.
Unteni joululaulu,
sinihimmeä laulu,
himmeä laulu.
Kaukainen joululaulu,
pyhä, hiljainen laulu.
Suo mulle kätes, ystävä oi!
Kanssani kuule, laulu kun soi!
Enkelten kuoro juhlana joulun
taivaan holvien sinestä helkkyy.
Kaukainen joululaulu,
pyhä, hiljainen laulu,
hiljainen laulu.

An absolute delight!
Well done, in especially trying circumstances. Lovely sense of humour too.
So difficult to keep in tune (cf the other such work Kenneth Leighton, Drop, drop slow tears.) Part of the problem is solved in being certain that repeated notes don't go flat...
Such a heartfelt performance! Thank you!
♥ :)
Tears streaming down my face. Thanks for your stellar artistry and bravery!!!
Thank you, Thomas! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and that this performance continues to touch people after all these years.
Truly beautiful. We recently has started to learning this piece in our choir and it is really helpful to listen to you.
Bravo
Oh, wow!!! Only four.
Super lindo
It sucks to have tastes so eclectic that one can find something as profound as this and find so little comment on it. Even Messiaen miscalculated the power of the writing. His version was for massive choirs of upwards 80 performers. Yet this quartet finds the soul of it in is smallness
And it's minimalism helps me understand Messiaen's harmonies more than any other from his amazing oeuvre.
Love it💝
👍🏻😄
Well done! Love the bare feet, too.
Gesualdo, as is well known, was mentally not the most stable person and his unique mind left us with some of the most original madrigals and motets in musical history. This is a great performance and while luckily Gesualdo's work had a revival during the 20th century, promoted especially by composers of the Second Vienna School (like Webern) and subsequent famous composers like Peter Maxwell Davies and Wolfgang Rihm, there's still a huge audience that still has to discover this amazing body of work.
Wonderful performance of this technically quite challenging piece and as already many have stated, very brave of these excellent singers.
Aufregend, verstörend, bildschön, wie aus einer anderen Welt. Gesualdos Musik mit nobler Klangkultur, ohne romantisches Parfum. Wunderbar!
It's amazing how rich the harmonies are in this piece when you realize that it is only four parts. My all-time favorite choral moments from Messiaen are the lovely chorale in Mvt 2 of La Transfiguration (Configuratum corpori claritatis suae) and the entirety of Mvt 7 (Choral de la sainte montagne). The latter in particular has some unspeakably beautiful harmonies.
Indeed. It's perhaps a rare Messiaen piece that gives me some insight into his harmony, pared back to four parts while the rich texture is still there.
Bravo 👏👏 😁
Such harmony, awesome indeed 💖
Wonderful!! from London
I still love this, 6 years later. A perfect performance of a great piece! Thanks, friends. ❤️
Neko ovde zbog online skole? ne samo ja ok ?
I ja
That’s Spem Alium great, that is.
The first time I heard this piece I thought, wow Messiaen wrote the most sublime and majestic "Hallelujah" that I'll ever hear. This is def my favorite performance and recording of it.
Glorious. The sounds Messiaen constructed in contemplation of the divine almost seem to reach beyond the limits of human perception. There's an almost terrifying psychadelic quality to the music, not in the sense of purely evoking a "trip" but an altered state of consciousness, one almost capable of comprehending concepts like omnipotence and eternity.
Otherworldly is the word for this otherworldly music, beautifully sung here.
Does anyone know why there are menorahs in the back when it's a Christian church? I could be wrong but it seems very uncommon to see a church with a cross and menorahs.
Beautiful ! (but at 1:04 the chord is minor, not major !)
Thanks! Interesting. Which source gives a minor chord there? The 1615 part books give B natural in both Cantus and Altus, and it would be strange to come off that cadence into a minor chord - though, of course, there are many strange things in this madrigal...
Ha ha ha
the story is so funny
Incredible voice and breathing control. No hiding places with just four voices !
This is one of my favorite performances of one of my favorite pieces of music.
Miren como la caga el gordito
lovely
This is definitely the best past time EVER! Lucky you lads you can rehearse in such a lovely ambient! What you live&experience, could be a life's dream for others... Keep on with the good work! You are great!
very lovely :) glad to have found this.
All of a sudden the live performance of this very piece that I heard in 2016(?) in Meilahden Kirkko came to mind. That was an otherworldly, brilliant and hitherto unsurpassed experience of this piece - which is by no means the easiest to do in a one voice per part version. Will we ever get to hear EVCH again? Since the members are pursuing their individual careers in different fields and parts of the world it seems less likely. It’s always a sheer delight to hear ms. Antolas beautiful and intelligent singing. Remember her name - you will definitely hear of her.
So beautiful!!!!
bravissimi!
What a marvelous ensemble.
C'est pas mal ...mais c'est écrit pour choeur...là , trop de sopran ...bien quand même ! :)
You guys are Amazing!
a performance that brings joy to my heart and tingles to my brain.
This is an incredible performance of an incredible piece of music.
Amazing, amazing. We get not just the grandeur of the music but an extraordinary intimacy. Quite a revelation to hear the work performed by such a small ensemble.
The whole soprano line from 0:57 to 1:11 sounds like performed on Ondes Martenot: pure awe!
Simply stunning
Because of a conversation yesterday I came back to the Bluebird and have just been searching out different versions on CZcams. I think this single-voice-to-a-part account has a really lovely quality in a fabulous acoustic. Really really lovely....
Wow
