Upgrading an existing pen that you enjoy makes sense because the outlay occurs at two different times. Though I would probably just buy the L2K rather than $100+ for a nib and $70 for the Aion or Lx. My broad Lamy steel nibs are pretty great, but my fine 14K nib (L2K) is absolutely superior.

OK I have to ask, what is the ink in the Custom 74? I have two 3776’s, a medium and broad and a Sailor 1911L. I was fortunate to win the 3776 medium and bought the other pre-owned (excellent condition) for $120US. The Sailor was perched new at a steep discount. I have no cons for any of these pens. One possible exception is that my Sailor does not have that striking red section.

I love that green color, but why is it so expensive. I just can’t go to 300+. I walked all over sf pen show last weekend all 330or so. If low 200’s okay. I guess I need to move to Asia. Any idea how I can get for low 200’s?

The basic Kuru Toga Mech pencil is great. But looking at the price and what it does, I can see why it at the price point what it is. Not many other pen manufacturers don’t really want to focus on a pleasant user experience when it comes to mechanical pencils. uni-ball looks like they know how to really produce a high quality mechanical pencil. Definitely want to get my hands on one to try it!

the mark up on the 1911 L black lister is honestly ridiculous, you can get the usual rt or gt 1911L with the smaller version. But I have to say that black luster looks really good which was why I was looking into it, but I think if youre going to get it, better get it on the Cylint model. They have a brass patina version and the other is stainless steel , black resin and black luster trims. They look like pro gear models, and I don't know if some people prefer their pen lighter, but I always like the weight of the full metal ones. I wish the difference was at most $50 or something on the black buster and make it available to all the pro gear and 1911 models too.

The 146 is probably one of the best and most reliable piston fountain pens around if not hands down the best. I owned it for years as well as many other FPs. It looks as well as new after more than then years of which are now eight in tropical climate in Singapore. That’s important as other pens showed negative impact from the South East Asian climate to the metal decorations (Omas) or total disintegration (Visconti celluloid). It is not only a perfect shaped and functioning pen, but also very long lasting compared to its more fancy or precious competitors. So, while its pricing appears understandably inflated it has a good return. Regarding pistol filler competition it has quality wise (again SEA climate tested) one 1:1 competitor which is the Lamy 2000, which is not everybody‘s cup of coffee due to its none traditional design. Another alternative would be the similar to the 146 looking Aurora piston filler 88 with a very similar to the Montblanc “nice plastic feeling”. P.S.: Pilot/Namiki and Nakaya/Platinum fountain pens are also of extremely high and lasting quality. Sailor has some issues in my climate as well though. P.P.S.: Montblanc is like Rolex or Mercedes, a bit boring overpriced status symbols but that’s also for a reason. In all three cases it is mainly functionality, lasting quality and international repairability due their wide global distribution

The ergonomics and durability of the Safari seem to me to be an excellent and very logical match for the gold nib. The beauty of LAMY's easily interchangeable nibs is that you can test drive it on multiple form factor bodies and dial in what feels and performs the best for you. Now that the gold nib is closer to $125, it's probably a tad bit overpriced given its size, but it does deliver the goods for sure, and it def competes favorably with gold nibs from the other major brands.

Hard to say from video, but I think your pen hold is by default at a rather steep angle creating more force to get flex. It might not be possible, but lowering that angle should help with flex, if you can modify your grip slightly and get used to it. Good video, love the honesty and that you didn't review it RIGHT AWAY, but after much writing time.

I have not tried the Platinum 3776, but my current everyday writer is a Pilot Custom Heritage 91 soft fine medium. I prefer flat finials, and the 91 is more comfortable to me than the 912 because the 912 is less balanced when posted, and the slight barrel step up interferes with where I place rest my thumb on the grip. The #10 nib SFM is something quite special, though. I bought my 91 from a Japanese small distributor, and it wrote perfectly right out of the box, so I would recommend people buying pens directly from Japan go with Pilots foremost, as I have purchased Sailors that had perfectly tuned nibs, nibs that wrote like nails, and nib tips that were over-polished and over-ground.

Surprisingly enough I had more quality control and consistency problems with Pilot rather than any of my Platinum pens. Platinum usually never dries out and the line is consistent with any ink at any direction. Custom 74 on the other hand is known to have flow issues with upstrokes while downstrokes are quite wet. Also most of my Pilot pens has tines way too tight from the factory and require some nib massaging before being good. I also had 3 different Pilot VP and all of them had singing nibs. Platinum and Sailor nibs are usually great from the factory.
