You should consider building your own small, maybe even desktop size compounder. it’s essentially a twin screw extruder, for mixing PLA fibre wirh pigments and any other desired additives, usually in a 50/50 ratio, and is how they get masterbatches for PLA filament made. The difference between this and normal twin screw extruders is that the two screws are more interlocked in the compounder, the compounder has melt filters, electric heating to make sure the PLA or other plastic doesn’t stick to the barrel and keeps moving, it had doses for the ingredients often too, and shape dies. Also, extruder the ropey lines of PLA that come out of it underwater for the best result, the other end coming out of the water and into a relatively simple machine that uses a blade to cut this cylindrical “tube” or “rope” into smaller pellets. The heat that actually melts the PLA here is merely from the shear friction of the two screws though. This is how differently colored PLA is achieved essentially, at factories. It’s the best way to control exactly what color you get. I am not entirely sure if it would work scales down, though? Since the torque would be less in said screws than on a large size version of the same set-up, which has several feet long screws. Like 10+ feet! But I did see this thing, so maybe it is doable after all… robotdigg.com/product/1734/Twin-screw-parallel-or-conical-type-desktop-extruder,-pelletizing-line

That was pretty much just coincidental. Although, that being said, the hot die acts as a heater for the. The warmer the water of the first bath the better the results, but I agree, this is not the way to do it.

Try adding another heater band . Move large two back. Place a split band closer to die and insert a thermocouple to monitor dwell temp. Or buy a thermo gun so you can see temp at die

From what I know, lowering of the pressure and distillation are not enough to allow for lactic acid polymerization. Lactic acid is not easy to polymerize; usually PLA is made from the cyclic dimer hexaring (-CO-CH(-CH3)-O-)2 and thus this implies heat and higher pressure. n(-CO-CH(-CH3)-O-)2 --p/heat--> (-CO-CH(-CH3)-O-)2n PHZ (PHILOU Zrealone from the Science Madness forum)

Hi! I actually imported these pellets from China, but it worked out fairly expensive (about R160/kg) with transport and low volume. I have spoken to another South African who says he can source it for around R70/kg locally, but would resell it at R100/kg. My Chinese partner (based in China) and I have searched all over China for suppliers but their prices are not that great since they actually are a net importer of PLA. I have played a bit trying to make PLA, which had some good results so far but with me not being a chemist, it is a hit n miss process so far. I will upload a video of that too.
