Seismic Analysis of Multi-Story Buildings using the Response Spectrum Method
In this video, the use of Response Spectrum analysis in seismic analysis and design of Multistory Buildings is explained.
The free vibration of Multi-story buildings is explained along with the concept of mode shapes.
The method of modal analysis is briefly explained. In a modal analysis the multistory Mutli-Degrees of freedom (MDOF) building is
converted to a number of single degree of freedom (SDOF) Structures.
Then it is shown how to use the modal analysis method to find the seismic forces using the response spectrum curve.
An example is given on how to analyze a Multi-Story MDOF system using ASCE7-10 Response Spectrum method.
Although the lecture uses specific factors and provisions from the ASCE-10 Code, most of the procedure is valid for any other design code.

    1. We scale up the base shear obtained by Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA) to that of the Equivalent Lateral Force (ELF) method. But when RSA base shear is higher than ELF method, why don't we scale down RSA to the ELF ?? 2. Response acceleration should be zero at T = 0 in response spectrum curve. But response acceleration is starting at coordinate equal to 40% of SDS (by formula). Why is it so ??

Hi Dr Nafie, how did you obtain the mode shape? I would like to obtain a simple expression for idealizing a building as a prismatic member, I think it can be done, but the hardest trick is the mode shape. And, deflection of the tip of the building I think can also be obtained from the modal participation multiplied by acceleration multiplied by mode shape.
