Love the video idea and your picks except for American Dirt. It really doesn’t need any more clout than it had when it came out because it’s super problematic and exploitative. Not a good choice IMO.

I love the Simon Armitage verse translation of 'Sir Gawain', yes, it is a great story. I love Arthurian literature also. Do you know the Susan Cooper 'The Dark is Rising' sequence? It is an Arthur retelling set in modern day Cornwall, YA fantasy, and brilliant!

I read "The Familiar" when it came out, my first book by Leigh Bardugo, and I thought it was, alright, pretty average, I thought it was a bit confusing at time, but I'd be interested to know what you think about it ! If you like her writing, she wrote "Six of Crows", which is a duology, I can let it to you if you're interested, that is really good ! Super fast paced and great characters 👍

Silent Spring is difficult to read as it is frustrating to learn how casually we used chemicals in the environment in the post WW2 era - and how we ignored warnings from concerned scientists. Rachel Carson was so intelligent and she did make a difference before cancer took her life. This book was a slow read for me as I kept getting angry and I would have to walk away for awhile. The Secret History was well written - but honestly I did not like this book. I finished it - but I did not keep the book in my collection. I don't think I am a dark academia reader. I keep wondering if I should try Goldfinch.

Great mix of books! No rush on The Wager :) The book club video stays up, so you can come chat about it whenever you get to it 😊 I loved Seven husbands, I hope you will too. I also had mixed feelings about Yellowface, and I didn't love the audiobook, but I've heard others say that they really liked it, so that might be a me thing! It's a fun book to have read either way I feel like, just because "everyone" knows it. Same with Seven husbands, but I enjoyed that one a lot more. I suddenly have a bunch of books to read, they creep up on me haha! Top priority is the book club reads, so Pachinko and Song of Achilles for August, and then I would also like to at least start Ours by Phillip B Williams. I'm not picking any more books for August though, summer is so short and there's so much to cram in! Glad to hear you're doing well, have fun gardening! :)

Beloved is on my top favorite books and I've read it twice (planning to read it again). I think is absolutely brilliant, and a very important book about ptsd and trauma of the aftermath of slavery, but also of any other trauma also. I couldn't love her writing style more. I love this book all the way! I just finished James. I loved it, but I wanted more from it. Thinking about it, Beloved did for me what James didn't in terms of writing style. I think James was a great book that would have been greater if it was longer. Some significant relationships, including Huck's and Jim's I felt were undeveloped and left me wanting. I can say more about it because I don't want to spoil it. I gave it 3.75, but I still loved it. Beloved was a 10 stars for me, but I gave it 5 because that's the goodreads maximum.

@@RaspberryReads very good! It explores how Europeans came to North America and began to settle while sharing perspectives from both the European and Native American sides. Argall, my favorite of the series, is written in the Old English style while flipping back to a contemporary prose to give reflections of what modern day locations within the novel look and feel like. It’s about the story of John Rolfe and Pocahontas and how the two factions struggled to find peace amidst violence. Great read and if you do a bit of research on Vollmann the author and person, you’ll see that it comes from a unique mind. He also gives his full bibliography of sources used to write it. Definitely recommend!

I had a pretty great reading month in terms of quality, but I would say they were pretty safe choices. Very happy about it nonetheless ^^ I didn't get to a lot of historical fiction, unfortunately, but I read that every now and then anyway. I want to get to Beloved and James at some point as well. I liked The Wager on audiobook (slightly slowed down), but there are also pictures and maps and things in the printed book which might add to it.
