    Im sure you mentioned it in one of the ither videos i just cant remember. How thick is the slab? We are thinking about going a 40x40 slab with bags for a common space between 2 shipping container homes. Large kitchen and seating and play area for the kids. We thunk 4 inches is what were gonna do but just wanted to see what you did as it held up really nice.

    • @reallifetested2605

      I was aiming for 4” which would have been fine but it ended up being closer 5.5 to 6” in most places. If you’re not pulling heavy vehicles or anything like that I’d imagine 4” would be just fine. Our driveway was poured 4” thick and it holds up to daily ups trucks and the occasional fedex truck. I will mention if you’re putting shipping containers on it you might need footers depending on the shipping container. I’ve seen some of the designs of those place a majority of the weight on the 4 outside corners but that’s just something to check into to be safe.

    I got a question for you. First off great videos thanks for taking your time to show the work. now, being that these metal buildings are completely sealed for instance under the eaves around the entire building it's technically not sealed there. Do you think that those would be a good enough solution for the intake vents rather than putting them on the front and back of the shop?

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605 Před 3 dny

      Its hard to say. If you have a few garage doors you might be ok because they have large openings at the top of the doors. I actually had the same thought process. I tried installing the gable vents only first but couldn’t get enough airflow so I had to install the turbine vents. Your situation might be different though. My issue was moisture from humidity but I live in the south where it’s always extremely humid. It also helps draw heat out which is good in the summer but not so much in the winter.

    • @loganhubbard3177
      @loganhubbard3177 Před dnem

      Thanks for the reply. I installed the whirly birds and they seemed to be doing ok. I did not mention the shop doors above where there is usually large gap, they have been sealed using a flexible material. Where the flat part of the trusses are on the bottom I installed blue Tex material so it's like an attic if you can picture that. So that being said I put a front gable vent on with a fan on a timer switch. about 2' in front of the inlet and the birds are moving strong. I climbed up and they are moving air out not in.

    Title is a little misleading the price of bagged concrete is not the 10k saver it's doing it yourself that is the huge savings. For a project this size (10cy+) a ready mix truck would be cheaper than bags when talking concrete cost only. Regardless, you have an admirable amount of patience and drive to complete something like this yourself.

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605 Před 11 dny

      I did this during covid, in my area truck was 200 - 220 depending on the day delivered with a 4-6 week lead time. 80 lb bags were 3.20 each making a cubic yard 144. Local contractors wanted a minimum of 14k to do this work ranging to 20k. I have 3800 in gravel, and concrete. I did a 1 and 2 year update if youre interested. The one year has a ton of questions that I answered as well as showing pricing. I didn't mean to be misleading, I did mention I saved the money doing it myself using bags. @@reallifetested2605 If the 'crew' you hired was just one person, thats a decent wage. But, to counter your statement, what if a typical crew for a contracted job like this was 4 people? Using your numbers, that's about $40 per hour for each person. Again, a pretty typical rate (actually kind of cheap). My point being - there wasn't really any money 'saved'. Just time spent. Which could have also been spent earlier in life with (arguably) better life decision) to financially position yourself to contract out the work and save (potential) wear and tear on your body that will come back to haunt you when you're 60.

    • @reallifetested2605

  • @carolewarner101
    @carolewarner101 Před 20 dny

    WOW, fantastic! That was one hell of a lot of work, but saving (not spending) $10k is totally worth it unless you're making $150 an hour at your job or something. I heard that Einstein once said that specialization is for insects, yet now days there are specialists for everything, and every one of them costs near a fortune to hire. Labor is often 50% of the cost of getting something done or built. In your case it was a lot more than that! There are things in this world that you can only get with money, and for 99% of us, there's only so much money to go around. You aren't going to get car or health insurance without money, but whatever you CAN do for yourself will allow you to keep your cash money to spend on other things that you can't get any other way. It can also allow you to wind up with an end product that's a lot nicer than you could ever afford to pay for. Case in point, my husband and I are building a house for ourselves. If we paid someone to build it for us, I'm imagining that it would cost well over $600k. But by doing the work ourselves we hope to get by on a third that (we're milling our own lumber too). Another really important thing you pointed out is that when you do for yourself you always learn something. Building our own home we will no doubt make tons of mistakes, but I look at that as cheap "tuition." Because rather than paying that tuition to a college for a grade and a degree at the end of it, I'm paying it for materials, first hand experience and a physical end result that I can keep or sell to someone else! While my results may not match the work of a professional, the majority of the time it's perfectly adequate, exceeds code, and is plenty nice enough for me. And honestly, I once apprenticed with a professional construction crew and THEY made a bunch of mistakes too! Way more than I ever would've thought, in fact some were just plain dumb IMO, but it made me realize that the "pros" don't have all the answers either. They just dealt with any mistakes by ripping things out and redoing them or whatever they had to do to make it right, which is exactly what we will do with any mistakes we make on our house. Once we get our house built, we'll have no mortgage AND if anything breaks or needs maintenance or repairs we'll know exactly what to do because we put it all together in the first place. Plus, we'll likely know how to make it even better because we'll have learned so much during the initial process of making it. Lastly, there's just the incredible pride and satisfaction one gets from making something really useful that they're proud of. That and the security of knowing you can make due yourself is a feeling you just can't beat! Your slab looks amazing, and you've given us the courage to pour our own slab too. Harbor Freight is having a sale on those cement mixers right now in fact!

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605 Před 16 dny

      You've got that right, we were more than willing to pay someone for the work. When we received quotes from 14k and up I was like no way i'm paying that for just a slab. That's awesome you guys are building your own home. Especially milling your own lumber. It will be better quality than you could ever pay someone to do. I don't understand codes and regulations or how its checked. As you stated I see professional construction companies all of the time doing things that would never pass but somehow the project continues and gets signed off on. My home is a perfect example. I found wires pulled through my main that had over an inch of insulation missing darn near touching the metal panel and somehow that passed, as well as a lot of other questionable things. Everyday I see homes thrown up with nails not even hitting the studs that are holding the walls together, siding falling off of new homes that aren't even old enough to have someone living in them, brickwork falling off, gutters sagging and somehow all of that passes. I think most of that is a scam in itself. No mortgage is another awesome thing, you'll be able to live almost care free because its yours and if you live within your means life will be a little less stressful. Like you said if something happens you know where every nail, wire, and pipe is so nothing will be a surprise. Hey I appreciate the kind comment, and you're right the mixer is on sale! I can say for certain what its done for me I definitely recommend it!

    The problem is u should be putting half the load of the cca ratings on the battery. And that tester might pull only 120 amps.

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605 Před 22 dny

      That’s definitely the correct way to test a battery. But for the money, I think it’s a fine deal. It also gives you at least a general idea of your battery condition. Think, if your battery fails with 100 amp load it’s definitely going to with half cca load. Thank you for the good information.

    Sheer determination!!!! I fully understand the concept of a man trying to figure out ways to achieve an end goal but feels like hiring it out is an absolute waste of money. Overcoming that with your own ambitions does look crazy to the average person but if you have the capability and grit just find a way. Good job to you!!! It was a really well shot video to watching the sun shadows. Gives you the relative amount of time you were working on each section!!! Thanks for sharing

      Thank you for the kind words. We were willing to help local businesses until quotes started coming in. They ranged from 14k to 20k so I started calculating what I could do it myself for. I ended up spending 3800 for the concrete and over 100 ton of gravel. I can’t justify paying a company 10 to 16 thousand dollars for a days work for them. I guess they’re getting it somewhere though.

    You're smart! A dollar saved is a dollar earned. Think of how much materials you can get for $10K. I go by the same saying: I don't make that much in an hour so I'll do it myself. Learn to do plumbing and electrical as well. Plumber's &. Electricians are in a league of their own.

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605 Před měsícem

      I agree with that. We were willing to support local businesses but when quotes came in from 14k to around 20k I looked into materials and did it myself for 3800 with over 100 ton of gravel and 830 bags of concrete. I couldn’t justify paying a company over 10,000 in labor. Someone is making a killing and I’m sure they’re not paying the laborers that much.

      You can probably get an airtight container, drop your filament in, and pour the silica beads all around it. That’s what I did with my ammo in cases and it worked great. I even ended up putting a large canister in my safe to keep everything dry and it works great.

    Great video. I am in the process of running wire in my 30x30 metal shop. I've been back to Lowes 3 different times taking gang boxes back because they wont work on the metal beams. what kind of silicone did you use around the base.

    • @AB_thingsDFW
      @AB_thingsDFW Před měsícem

      I also have a 30x30. What size of wire you're going to be using for service? Of course it'll depend on what you're going to power inside. Just curious.

    • @reallifetested2605

      I used the ge all purpose silicone from Lowe’s. So far it’s holding up great. My local Lowe’s didn’t ever have enough boxes with the tabs like I use so I had to order online and do a store pickup. They carry them in their stock just never actually had them for some reason.

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605 Před měsícem

      There are calculators online. It really depends on how far you’re running it and the amount of current you’re pulling. Also if you’re using aluminum or copper. I found a website called Nassau national cable and at the time they were almost 1/2 price of what Lowe’s and Home Depot had.

    Yes, the bearing crapped out on me it’s totally seized. My fault though, I left it in the position that you have it in before winter came and I forgot to put a tarp on it. Water got in, went to use it the next spring and first mix it died. Had it for several years, a couple of loose bolts, it’s noisy as #*$& but can’t complain for the price, it’s not harbour freight but an identical model sold in canada, 219$ plus tx

      You might can spray a little penetrating oil and let it soak to free it up. My bearing is running on borrowed time, it’s getting louder and louder haha I’ve definitely got my moneys worth out of it though so it’s worth a little tlc I suppose when the time comes.
