Can someone review for me the following: a thief comes forward to admit theft, why aren’t they obligated to bring the object to the court to be relieved of the applicable double payment? Also, if it’s an animal that they stole, wouldn’t the thief be obligated to produce the animal to show it wasn’t sold or slaughtered.

During your presentation concerning this issue in the area of Dinei Mamonot, to apply the logic to emotional abuse between partners, children to elders. One: because the abuse is not quantifiable one could posit the affected family member was like a weak fence- if they have a mental breakdown, did the other person do something wrong? Maybe that theoretical abuser just pushed them “closer to the fire?” Two: what about the abusers friends who spread lies or triangulated against that affected family member to get ahead of the fall-out by provided the alternative narrative that damage to that person was not correlated with or caused by the person’s behavior? What about witnesses to the abuse that don’t want to speak up or even acknowledge the abuse? It is concerning because these issues are so intangible and the affected person can never be repaid. It is also not like physical abuse where halachic public stigma might attach but I fear no one stands up against these individuals because publicizing this abuse would be so harmful and counterproductive. But also, if no one response to the affected members claim or experience at all(!) surely someone needs to take responsibility or there is truly no hope of correcting this wrong or educating abusers in the future. I don’t know the answer but I thought of this analogy and I wondered do you think it holds?
