Is The Philippines A Dangerous Place?
Is The Philippines A Dangerous Place?
We get a lot of questions from people about safety of foreign expats in the Philippines. Why do the houses look like prisons? Why do they have barbed wire and broken glass on top of their property walls? Do we ever feel unsafe? Let's talk about it..

I'd have to disagree with walls around a house is mostly for privacy. In America it may be that walls are for privacy but in the Philippines every wall I've seen has pointed spikes, barbed wire or shared glass on top of them. They're there for a purpose and that is to keep criminals and robbers out of your house. There's no police here patroling the streets. You'll see them come out after something happens. By then its too late.We have the 2nd amendment in America where any law abiding citizen can own a gun. In the Philippines, foreigners are not allowed to own gun's and I doubt many Filipinos own a gun either.

There are dangerous places in every country. The western part of Mindanao like Marawi is not a safe place for foreigners to go to especially white people because they really stand out from the Filipino people. I've never had any problems in the Philippines even when I've been out and about. Hey it's better to be safe by locking the gates because should something ever happen then you would be wishing that the gats were locked. The neighbors have dogs so they're the early warning system for our security. It's also nice to have security guards in the subdivision who are armed. It helps to deter some criminals.

Absolutely there are problems everywhere. I think the real differences is the support services when things go wrong. Guys are used to being able to call 911 in Mayberry and get help…guys the ambulance service in the Philippines is basically a taxi if available at all…most use a trike to try to the ER, once you get there you better have your ATM card ready…no cash no service…car accidents will mean a trip to the police station most likely and no English will be used unless speaking directly to you….learn the barangay complaint process if you are having issues, it’s not as simple as going to the Police….fire services are questionable. 1960s and 70s trucks are still in use in the provinces. It’s more about fixing your own problems than a safety net or parachute to fall into.

Risk is always there, the active threat is dependent on how you mitigate those risks and expose yourself to them. Don’t walk around informal settlements like you own the place. Don’t assume every person is your friend. Don’t hand your 1K camera to a bunch of street kids to film you buying a coconut. Learn to say no. The real risk that you can mitigate is the natural disasters and lack in response resources / infrastructure. Especially on islands where there isn’t much to begin with. Guys who are from the west aren’t used to weeks or months no power when a typhoon comes through. There are absolutely no go zones in the Philippines. To say there isn’t for a foreigner isn’t the route to go. It’s the Moro Islamic groups in Mindanao and Sulu. The New People’s Army, communist rebels, are in a verity of islands…

I try to inform people who read these sections (when YT doesn't delete for no reason) that adjusting to life in the Philippines can be very difficult and even frustrating. Gleaning helpful 'how-to' information, and avoiding scams/skin tax is like pulling teeth sometimes. Most of us older folk, especially those who've haven't traveled much, need a helper here, either a trusted maid or partner to make the transition smoother. There's also the issue of setting up your banking and cash flow with an alternate fail safe. On a modest income, you cannot support many others, such as stepchildren and/or extended family. Please do a trial run FIRST before you commit to living or moving here.

  • @joshuarizalforeman816

Cost of living or standard of living all depends on where you live and how much cash/income you have. My family lives in on the edge of a city, about 90m-2h from Manila. It is a peaceful environment, and I can get a hold of most foods, and what I can't get is often brought in by visitors. The only thing that really bugs me is the littering, but I can live with that. Like many Filipinos, before she met me my wife always hankered to emigrate to/work in Canada, primarily because one of her relatives worked there (for 20+ years and was able to build a house with her earnings, and she saw it as some kind of Paradise, ignoring the fact that as a housemaid, she would have limited freedom and would rarely be able to come home and see her family. When we relocated here from HK, she came to realise that, ultimately, it comes down to money. If you have a decent income, own property, etc. it is possible to have a good living without necessarily being lavish in your spending. She now owns property, has a business and a good income and money in the bank, so we aren't really affected by increasing costs. We have been overseas, to Europe and elsewhere in Asia, but it was purely as visitors so she didn't really experience what it would be like to live/work there. I have noticed that a lot of expats have been leaving recently, primarily for economic reasons, because they are unable to work here and have simply run out of cash.

    • @aboveitall9600

I don’t know if it’s completely about running out. It’s not getting the perceived value for your money. Expats don’t want to have to deal with the traffic or brown outs or beggars when paying dang near US prices for a lifestyle where they feel secure and comfortable. In a gated community, compound it’s very nice…minute you leave it’s the Wild West.

@@aboveitall9600 I actually quite like the Wild West, and I am not being flippant with that remark. I am widely-travelled - not just two weeks a year at a resort;that type of holiday is reserved for the family. Now I am settled down I don't do as much independent travel, but I try to get away for a month each year which we use to visit the not so family-friendly regions in the world. I'm not saying they are dangerous, Costa Rica, in particularly, is beautiful and one of the safest places I have visited as are Vietnam and Honduras, although the latter is touted is being extremely dangerous. I wouldn't take my kids there.

    • @user-zu5tv7zt6v
      @user-zu5tv7zt6v Před 4 dny

@@aboveitall9600 Exactly! For what it costs in some parts, it leaves you wondering if you could do better elsewhere for the same amount of money spent. Why should a 3rd world country cost as much or more than a developed country? The answer is: it should not! We also live well in a gated community. It's just the 3 of us, with our natural child. We eat in mostly, so eat well for less. I don't really think there is any such thing as a set 'western lifestyle' because we all lived different lifestyles back home, some minimalist, some lavish, and some in between. Being just outside of central Cebu, I like you, do not relish going into the heart of the city: dirty, crowded, extremely noisy. Not a party animal either, and there is always a get together somewhere, should we hanker for it. Most of the time my hobby, which is computers and home theater keep me from getting bored. In my younger days, I loved to travel but find it tiring now, except for an occasional vacation. All in all, I still prefer living in the Philippines to living in the USA.

I suggest looking at the SRRV numbers…it’s declining. One big reason, the American bases closed in 94…A lot of military guys have never been to the Philippines…The Vietnam era guys who make up a lot of the expats are aging and deciding to leave…we are going to see a 30 year serious gap in vets wanting to come. We have a VA hospital in Manila, but no commissary access, no real little America to visit like the old bases provided. Anyone who has been stationed overseas knows what I mean … Expat condos, the only real ownership option for expats without creative options have low occupancy rates…developers don’t provide the same disclosures as in the West in terms of association financials…15 million, 300K for a 60 sqm…less than 700 square feet is very expensive. It should concern anyone looking at property in expat communities… So are there better options? I would say the Philippines has competition for sure.

There is trouble in paradise, because there is no paradise. It's only youtubers selling the dream. The Philippines is a tough place to live, we all know that.

Tough place if you have no money. Not just Philippines but all over the world. You need work buddy.

Not just if you don't have money, but yes much harder then. I let my partner do most of the unpleasant tasks, only because of the language barrier. It has it good points and bad points. Overall, I prefer better than the states.

@@bertronix182 Or perhaps would be happier in another country. Wish we had explored other options as well. Money is important, but so is spending what you have wisely. I'd venture that the vast majority in the Phil are on a fixed income, and few are rich by US standards. Any vloger that paints the Philippines as a paradise, or Fantasy Island, is either delusional or doing it for likes and to get more subscribers, given that he has really lived here and not just passing through.
