Stoicism: An In-Depth Explanation
Get 20% off DeleteMe US consumer plans when you go to joindeleteme.com/henderson and use promo code henderson at checkout.
Stoicism is an ancient school of philosophy which originated in Greece and flourished in the Roman Empire. Its effects are still felt to this day through its influences on early Christianity, the rise of the Modern Stoics who preach Stoicism as a kind of fix for modern life's ills, and on CZcams.
But what is Stoicism? What is its history? What do we leave out when we talk about it nowadays? That's what I wanted to figure out in this video.

as long as human mind does exist then you don’t need academia anymore! many irrational thief apes don’t use academic references anymore because the reference became human thoughts (they steal and pollute human thoughts), take a look at Bernardo the thief, Joscha the thief, Vervaeke the thief,…. etc

The British do not face a crisis because they have been practicing theft for centuries. They have institutions dedicated to fraud, deception, and theft (they live on the tragedies of humanity since several centuries ago). Why don't you also practice theft and fraud?

Can you start some kind of a mentorship group for beginners, middleweights and advanced for people wishing to get more into philosophy whereby you maybe set tasks like readying a few chapters of this book and writing up to 500 lines about it with topics set by you and then maybe you grade the paper or just offer some insight into how to improve. I would pay monthly for that. Really sucks about your job but I think things will take off for you now in a bigger way and you will have even greater freedoms and control over your destiny. You will do great things!

It’s strange how I watched this video closely and yet I feel that I’ve only scratched the surface. As was said in the video. I still feel as though I don’t “fully” understand what stoicism is. On the terms of the ethics, I got a somewhat firm grasp but on the physics and logos is where I’m having trouble most. Think I’ll read those stuff in the description in order to get a full grasp of it. Why the hell not, I’ll finally read meditations by Marcus Aurelius. I’ve been putting it off for too long.

The liberal arts (social sciences and the humanities) do not provide USEFUL skills that benefit society or the student. By contrast, the trades (electrician, plumber, mechanic, HVAC, etc.) benefit both society and the tradesmen. (I consider nurses, physicians, accountants, and engineers as tradesmen becauuse they benefit society in the same manner as blue collar tradesmen.)

You are doing philosophy here, and we're so glad for it. Here in Brazil the best higher education you can get is "free". Our taxes fund state undergrad and graduate schools, but getting an academic job is absurdly hard. In private universities, we're having the same issues as in the US, they're hiring managers that are honestly just making education look like an auto industry, and students are less and less interested in pursuing a degree because you don't have the prospect of finding good jobs at the "end" of your education. I think it's a crisis all over, and it's a shame. I myself am trying to navigate the non-academic world post-pdh (in English) in Brazil, and it's been challenging, especially because the job market here is so frail. Anyway, I'm glad you'll be making more videos. Your substack newsletter is great too!! Cheers!

Anathem is my absolute favorite, go back to time and again, novel. It opens like a flower. First you just see the bud of an idea, then it opens further and further, goes from cloistered to urban to global and further, from monastic to near-future urban, and see how linguistics and social structures can develop. Fantastic read if you can get past those first daunting pages.

Thank you for this video. I've never seen your channel before, nor am I in philosophy myself, but I've recently been put in a situation where being in academia has become untenable for me. A lot of people I've listened to on this topic before approach it with a kind of glib doomerism--"Academia is completely broken! Leave now and you'll never regret it!" which I always found unhelpful, because I--and every academic!--am here because I love the subject I study, and I love teaching it to others. How could I not regret leaving? So I really appreciate you admitting that there are things you miss, and that there was grief for the life you thought you'd have, and that you did have to overcome the feeling of failing, but that it was the right choice anyways. You've given me some hope for my future. Thank you.

As a fellow academic turned engineer working in Austin’s tech scene, I can empathize with the position you’re in (although I was a cognitive science guy, not strictly philosophy). The uncertainty can be especially difficult to wrestle with as men who are fathers. Lovely analysis. Stoicism is what lead me into being interested in Philosophy, and eventually lead me to other schools of thought and philosophical thinking. I hate how it's become so mainstream and is grossly misunderstood and espoused by these weird "sigma-male" types who, vindicate their shitty behavior and ultimate lack of empathy for "being a stoic". Even the term "stoic" is ill-defined in modern dictionaries as someone who doesn't show emotions, reinforcing the notion to people who aren't aware of the origins that it's another word for displaying socio-pathic tendencies, which is why I think many people turn sour at the thought or notion of stoicism when their main projection of this line of thought is by these very people who tarnish the name. Sad, because you could argue these ancient stoics we're probably more in tune with their own nature, emotional regulation and the nature of the universe compared to society at large in their respective time. Keep these coming!

Fun fact: in the book "meditations" by Marcus Aurelius. The word "among us" was stated 18 times. And the word 'sus' that's associated to 'suspicion' was stated 13 times. Imagine governing the entirety of the most powerful empire of that time, while you're restraining yourself to say "sus amongus" , "when the imposter is sus" or "sussy baka" to report an alleged imposter and ignore the venting allegations for 17 straight years!! I think the biggest problem with journaling is that people think that they must follow a structure. Nowadays, there are so many people who share their journaling experiences and the way they do it, and people think that they should journal that way as well. But I think that you should write anything you feel like writing on your journal, whether you write about your day, a movie you watched, a book, or even if you prefer perhaps doing sketches or any other thing. We should find journaling fun. Writing down stuff is super fun in my opinion.

Perhaps the stoic’s ethical conclusions were unwittingly derived from pragmatism and the logical foundations that underly them were actually just rationalized after the fact to reach those conclusions. This might explain why so many ideologies throughout the world seem to have independently grasped toward such similar ethical conclusions.

The Stoic Reader is essentially just of the Stoics. The Hellenistic Philosophy volume is more comprehensive. The Hellenistic Philosophy book mentioned in this video is more of a scholarly summary of teachings. If you’re interested in going beyond the Stoics, get the Hackett book and maybe the book I mentioned here too.

Habla mucho, dice poco....musings of someone promoted in non premier departments of any academic discipline. Somewhere in well done such videos, where we go to find practical advice on how to live, surely important to stoicism, should be practical advice, with a minimum of verbiage. So titled, and my reason for my visit. Instead, we hear and see a display of showing off what passes for in depth knowledge. At best confusing to the seekers of the world. Just enough to inform, and to get us thinking and doing better, as I try to practice when asked about the helpfulness in my two fields of valid academic promotion, namely in allopathic medicine and epidemiology/public health. My appeal here likely fits in with logos ---verses jive. Try to end each such presentation with a terse sentence or two on just how to do it. The sort of talk one finds not in departments of philosophy, my man.

Good thoughts. It leaves me wondering: Is modern stoicism up to the task of philosophy if its original grounding in logic is abandoned, since logic entailed epistemology? On what ground can stoicism stand if it itself has abandoned grounding itself in anything? If stoicism is merely elective, it's less a philosophy than a consumeristic whim.
