French Green Earth, PG23 handmade watercolor paint
Light Green Earth from France, Terre Verte, PG23 from @KremerPigments
This wonderful earth color is highly transparent and extremely lightfast. A historical pigment widely used in oil paintings but not so much in watercolors due to it’s lower tinting strength. The most well known minerals giving this pigment are Celadonite and Glauconite, where the last one gives a bluer shade.
Green Earth gets its color from Iron-II-silicates, copper silicates, aluminium, iron oxides, magnesium, potassium, hydrated potassium silicates or calcium iron/aluminium silicates of various compositions.
It’s found at many places around the globe, all with similar or slight different hues of green.

    Hello everyone 👋🏼. The stronger versions of PG23 seem to be good for some varieties of palms (but not all). Some palm trees have a very pale green colour which I think the paleness and and low tinting strength of PG23 is good for (I have not actually tried it).

    I prefer tubes as it’s easier to get a large pigment load. I’ve been using M. Graham tubes & Beam Paints tubes. I have a lot of pans which are more convenient to take along and I like to have them for fun colours and to play around with/experiment more. It’s also easier to support local/handmade by purchasing pans. But I find it frustrating trying to get a lot of pigment out of a pan to mix up my hues before I paint. Love your channel! Thank you so much.

    Always appreciate the handmade paints. While the quality is usually better, for me its the labour of love that makes me appreciate it more. Someone who spends their time and sweat making this stuff is going to want to make a good product. As for pans or tubes...I like to paint mainly in oils so there's your answer I guess!

  • @sonpanchan
    @sonpanchan Před 27 dny

    I’m used to using pans since they are very convenient and on the go. However tubes allow for me to cover bigger areas with bigger brushes so for certain colors I have tubes. I am very interested in your process and how you check for quality in a paint. If you ever have a course about making your own handmade pigment I would definitely take it. I also love that you include pigment information. Some watercolorist that make handmade pigments don’t and it’s frustrating. One of my favorite handmade watercolor makers disappeared and I m left with a gorgeous purple that they made with no way to recreate it and every purple that I get does not match it.

    This video is an excellent analysis and comparison of the colors! Also, that graph of the YlnTiCo Red is really interesting to see all of the different colors it reflects from the different metals in it. Also, I love bold Potter’s Pink; this color reminds me of the Wallace Seymour version (PR233 but very dark compared to most brands) except this PR275 color more of a rose tone. It is a beautiful pigment. Also, that single pigment granulating PR101 looks like it contains red and black iron oxides (except 101 is synthetic so that’s confusing, unless it’s a 101:1 inorganic hematite). 🤔 And, when you wiped all that beautiful pigment away from the milling glass with a rag, my heart jumped a bit, lol. Could you use a rubber scraper to deposit the leftover pigments on the glass into a half pan, for use in a sketchbook? I want to start mixing paints for experiments at home, but I have anxiety about wasting any pigments. 😅
