Danton Supple - music producer interview at RAK Studios
What's it like to be a record producer that's worked on so many records with the likes of Coldplay, Suede, Morrisey, Starsailor, Patti Smith, Amy McDonald, Pet Shop Boys...? How do you make so many great records and have people want you back time after time? We met with Danton at RAK Studios (home to many of the biggest acts) where he has based himself in a cool studio that fuses cool interior design with technology to get his views and insight.
Danton uses this new studio space for writing, arranging and pre-production. In many cases, if the studio is appropriate, he books Studio Two at RAK to do the bulk of an album recording session and then brings the session up to his room to continue working on it.
Connected to the RAK network, Danton is able to hook up to the studio and have an assistant in his room busy editing etc while he's working in the tracking space etc. It's a very flexible setup and one great reason to be based at a studio complex - the studio facilities at RAK include a bunch of great tracking spaces with vintage mixing desks and now features a very impressive ATMOS mixing suite.
This is our fifth feature with Danton filmed over 20 years so please check our website for the other 'classic interviews'. George Shilling met with George on a lovely sunny day at RAK to talk about everything you can think of - this is very much an insiders perspective and requires a minimum of one cup of tea/coffee to be ready before watching as it runs nearly an hour - but we hope that you find this depth interesting :-)
A big thanks to Emma at RAK for making us so welcome and a big thanks to George Shilling for taking time out of his schedule to visit Danton.

This guy is so humble but so great that is not fair for him. He should be a big world star.
It seems that nobody likes that bottom snare or outside kick mic. I learned a neat trick from TLA, where you compress the absolute heck out of the bottom snare and not the top. I like to add a little 150hz to the bottom snare to get the beef, because I've already gated the life out of the top snare. It helped me realize that the bottom snare can alleviate the need for a sample sometimes. You can get quite a bit of tone out of the bottom snare because you don't have to gate it as much, especially if you angle the mic so it can pick up the snares but reject the kick (side and back rejection).

Listening to Scheps talk about this shit is such a breath of fresh air
So much noise in the sm57
I had many WOW moments throughout the video, looks like an amazing and creative space.....well done !!
Just fantastic! Thank you!
I grew up just a 100 metres away during the 1950's. Back then it was a pretty derelict building. They have done a wonderful job of restoration
Might be wrong, but I think that snare bottom mic is a Sennheiser MD 441. I couldn't remember either, don't see them as often as the 421, but they do seem to be a great mic. I like the Shure SM7B on snare bottom too. And I think I remember Andrew Scheps talking about doing that the other way around, SM7B on snare top.
Great interview, by both of you actually. I think the interviewer did really well to get so much out of it too, while not putting himself into the interview too much. It's refreshing to hear his tools and ways of tracking are pretty straight-ahead. And also great to have an engineer more demystify processes and tools than hype up the unicorns that live in an original Fairchild ;)
Which year, anyone?
12th Feb 2007 - roughly 🙂
Awesome space. JCM800s are pretty versatile. Used with a nice big efficient bass cab, they make good character bass heads too, if you want a gnarlier more driven sound than even the Ampeg. Can get you toward Lemmy's Marshall Superbass sound. I like a U67 type mic on bass cab, a little further back, and a Sennheiser 421-II up close (or RE-20, or even SM-7b). Speaking of Ampeg flip-top B-15s, I tried the Ampeg Portaflex PF-20T, which is sort of a modern iteration of the B-15. It's 20 watts (the PF-50 is 50 watts). Sounds really good, planning to buy one as my main bass recording amp at lower volume. What I like about it for studio use is that it isn't crazy loud. But can also operate as a tube DI with transformer and EQ, without a speaker load connected. Handy for studio, and much cheaper than a REDDI or Noble Preamp (though I'd love a Noble later).
Terrific video! Both informative and inspiring. The mix at 9:28! 😍
Thanks so much! 😎
I'm listening right here. I was told to tell where i was listening/watching from. Listening and obeying the destructions. Geez.
Ok ita call YT but Y ita only suggest White Producer (not ONE single Brown - while de Top10 are full of Brown Producer) when InI search fi "Sound Engineering" ??? What an amazing space!
Miss This Place (but I got some stuff from my own studio they were throwing out so not all bad I guess...😢)
Tidy studio very vibey great creative space.
Thanks for watching Neil 🙂
Incredible! Let's be friends :)
Always wonderful to watch Alan work!
Hmmmm. Mmmm. Mmm. Hmmmm.
Odd question: Is there a special lens material or glasses he's using? Screen fatigue (like a chair) is important. Great interview. Thanks!
I'd have to check but I'd say that there's a good anti reflective coat on those glasses.
George Michael's piano! 😊
awesome interview. I live about 40 mins away from FAME wonderful studio and amazing history
Very cool!
Never get rid of a comfortable chair. I threw out my studio chair because of a few rips in the fabric now I dislike the new one. Great interview!!
I noticed that chair in the previous feature shot at Strongroom - must be comfy 🙂
Great Producer!!
Excellent interview, thanks
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the interview ❤

Thank you for sharing! I have an upright piano and was trying to figure out the mic’ing process for it. Y’all rock! 🙏🏽😎🎹🔥
they do make it bought one last week
Yes!
Bock 251....nuff said eh!
All this technical talk as Nick stands in the background trying to figure out how to send a text message .
Not even close to a Decca Tree. No.1 is Glyn Johns' mic technique. Decca Tree is 3 x Omnis spaced on the same plane. Great sound though.
Great video, and great sound. The SM57’s from the back were a real surprise. 👍
would you recommend going for the precision series or the mk2 closed the gap? thanks!
I DO HIGH END /ULTRA HIGH RESOLUTION AUDIO MASTERING SHOULD INCASE YOU NEED A TASTE OF SOMETHING DIFFERENT I CAN MASTER 2SONGS FOR YOU FOR FREE SIR.

No music?
Nice one George!
Thanks George, these look great. I like how easy they appear to be able to be EQ’d in room via their supplied mic and simple Calibration feature. I got here from the link posted on your George Shilling - Music and Recording Facebook page 👍🏻🎶
Greetings George and Mike, May I ask how you are using this? Are you actually making mix decisions on them or do you use them for producing? Kind regards, Gene ✌️
That was a wonderful mix of art and science. I don't know anymore if I love the carbon mic or the tube SDCs more! And Ben Andrew's playing was hypnotic. But I must say, for a "standard" piano sound, the pair of DPA mics really impressed me. Could I ask what preamps were used? Because the sound in phenomenal!
This is awesome
The Drum room reverb sounds fantastic !! can hear it on the video camera audio!! -- Oh, what a privilege to spend time there ... One day maybe aye .... if only I could fly my electric plane from NZ over to Santorini...
Background music is awful and completely unnecessary...
