théorbe de pièces: Gigue angloise de Mr. de Visée
I wonder why it is named „Gigue angloise“?
Is it because the pieces feature harmonic sequences, as is also noticeable in anonymous French baroque guitar sources when „English“ is used in the title? Or is it because of the difference in dance itself, dance choreography, or tempo? As if English gigue was slightly slower and had more downbeat feel in the middle of the bar? Or perhaps because it is a second gigue in the suite and therefor it was deemed English since only in the British Isles they wouldn't mind dancing two jigs in a row?
By looking at „Gigue a la maniere engloise“ on page 46 of the livre de guitarre (1682), I cannot find any obvious answer or similarities. This gigue is shorter, simetrical, and set as sometimes Gigues by de Visee are in 3/8 instead of 6/8.
Anyway, this is a beautiful movement full of joy that comes before music galanterie such as three gavottes and three airs written in a dark, sad key.
From the 1716. publication (pieces de Teorbe et de Lute mises en partition), six movements (Allemade „La Conversation“, Sarabande, two gigues, and three gavottes) correlate with tabulatures for theorbo from Vaudry de Saizenai manuscript (1699), where these are listed in the key of G minor. It was a common practice when transcribing works for theorbo (and vice versa) to transpose the music down a fourth. Incidentally, playing these pieces on théorbe de pièces (a theorbo with smaller mensure tuned in D, a fourth higher than the bigger thoerbo) puts the music back in C minor.
The key of C minor was dark and sad key. Three of the four allemandes printed in the 1716. collection are Tombeaus (Tombeau de But, Tombeau de Fonty, and Tombeau de Mr. Francisque Corbet). There was only one key de Visee used to express more darkness and sorow-in F minor he wrote Tobeau de Madmoaselles de Visee, the daughters of the author (Allemande la Plainte).
Robert de Visée (c. 1655 - 1732/1733) was a lutenist, guitarist, theorbist and viol player at the court of the French kings Louis XIV and Louis XV, as well as a singer, teacher and composer for lute, theorbo and guitar.
Andrej Jovanić plays Allemand on théorbe de pièces.

This is the second Sarabande on page 380 of the Vaudry de Saizenay manuscript. It is part of 17 pieces listed in the key of G re sol mineur. Only two other “suites” in the theorbe part of the manuscript have more movements: G re sol majeur has 20, D la re mineur has 22. In this reading it is transposed to C minor because of the higher tuning of théorbe de pièces.

    The little theorbo sounds great! Concerning your question about "G. re sol": the key denominations in the MS Saizenay use the old hexachord terminology from the modal counterpoint system of the sixtenth century. In this system, the note G could have different functions depending on the context: it can be a Ut when the context is G Major, a Sol when the context is C Major, or a Re when the context is G Minor. The third note after the Re is a Fa, therby resulting in a minor third (tierce mineur). It is weird that this system is used, because there are pieces in this MS in impossible keys from a 16c standpoint, e.g. F# Minor.

    Mr. Francesco Corbetta (ca. 1615 - 1681) could not add his own variations to Mr. Le Cocq's Chaconne, because he was dead and had never heard Le Cocq's music. These Corbetta`s variations were added by the performer.

    • @nimbusartbelgrade
      @nimbusartbelgrade Před 11 měsíci

      Yes, of course, the variations were added by me, the performer. I was not trying to be misleading. We can see many examples of chaconne variation patterns developing from many early guitar alfabeto and tablature sourcers... The composers and performers listen, inspire, borrow from each other. Thank heavens for that. If there were copyright claims and restrictions 400 years ago, our music heritage today would be significantly poorer. Music defeats all barriers. As is with culture. Once upon a time, an ancient culture made something beautiful and everyone who saw this wanted to have it, to copy it, to take it to their part of the world. Then after some time, it inspired them to change it slightly and develop it further. It is all quite natural. I simply imagined chaconne to be one of these beautiful things from the past which has inspired me to create this version in a certain moment in time. I trust a performer in XVII or XVIII century would have done "the same", changing the version slightly each time it is being played, similar to story-teller, orator or jazz musician might do today.

      "A facsimile of the book without the second guitar part (presumably of the copy in the Civico Museo Bibliografico in Bologna) has been published by Forni Editore. A facsimile of the separate parts for the first twelve pieces was published by Studio per Edizioni Scelte in 1983. The second guitar part has been reproduced from the copy in the Bibliothèque nationale de France." I think this is from monicahall.co.uk/ or from James Tyler - A Guide to Playing the Baroque Guitar

    It sounds much higher than most other theorbos I have ever heard. Is this tuned higher than usual tuning?

    • @nimbusartbelgrade
      @nimbusartbelgrade Před 2 lety

      Yes, théorbe des pièces or "solo theorbo" or "lesser theorbo" is tuned a 4th higher then standard theorbo. It has shorter string lenght of about 74/126cm and is fit for lessons, solo playing but also accompaniment. In opus of de Visee we often see pieces transposed down a forth for theorbo. This suite, which appears in 1716 edition as dessus & bass partition in D minor is in Saizenay MS in tablature listed in A minor. So it is quite possible that it was also played in this "higher" tuning, I think.
