I love your videos. Thank you for all the great tips and for zooming in when doing the fine details, it helps a lot! This one is going into my "watercolor" playlist :)
Hello there, Thanks for your comments. I'm pleased that you enjoy the videos and I hope you get some good results. Best wishes, Steve
@@stephencoates8165 thank you Steve 😌
hello sir can you put a reference photo beside so we can more understand the color usage
This one was very helpful, thanks so much!
don't you think the shadow under the boat is a bit too strong, mate?
Hi there, Thanks for your question. Firstly I assume you mean reflections not shadows. The two are quite different. I've studied reflections and written a book on the subject and you can actually represent reflections in many different ways. They can be softer than the subject or a similar tone dependant on the conditions. So in answer to your question, in my view they are not too strong. Best wishes, Steve
hello sir what dark color did you used?
Hello, the dark colour is a strong mix of ultramarine and light red. Hope that helps Steve
Yes, it was exciting to watch it take shape, thank you!
Hi there, I am glad you found it exciting. Watching watercolour washes develop is very satisfying providing they are left to settle natuarally. Good luck Steve
I like this video. I started watercolor a few months ago, and have a set of cheap hake brushes. I find them unique and fascinating to use. I am very much in the early stage of using them.
what color paint did you use for the plum? Did you mix it, or is it straight out of the tube?
Hi there, The plum colour is a mix of ultramarine and light red. Striaght from the tube with a little water added to allow mixing. The light red is strong so be careful not to add too much. The resulting mix should be quite thick like oil. If it is too wet it will disperse too quickly on the previouisly wet paper. Keep working with the hake brushes, they are amazing! Best wishes, Steve
Dude, enough of that commercial get on with it!!!
Hi there, Providing free demonstrations on CZcams for you to watch takes a lot of time and effort. Most of us have products or services to promote so please be patient with the artists as they try to make a living. Best wishes, Steve
Super awesome still life tutorial ,thank you so much🌹
Ah can see the full image at 5:30 after you have dampened the paper! Thanks 🙏
Hi Stephen. Lovely tutorial again - would liked you to have paused on your finished pencil drawing so that we could copy it. The palette was in place too quickly for me 😊 See you at Patchings
Super demo, thanks for sharing
Very inspiring. Love the way you created the effect of bark on the trees. I will give it a go. Thanks!
Soooo nice! Thanks for this tutorial.
Love this
Thank you. Are you at patchings this year
Hi Geoff, Yes I have my own stand at Patchings. Come and say hello if you're attending. Best wishes, Steve
You are a great teacher!
The best watercolor tutorial that I've watched, and I've watched a lot lol! The way you broke it down and talked about every step and how how to approach it has given me a new starting point to improve my own painting. Thank you so much!!!
Hi Patrick, sorry for the late response. I'm glad you have been inspired by my teaching and I wish you well with your own paintings. Thanks for your lovely comments. Best wishes, Steve
Très bonnes explications. Merci!
❤❤teacher you're the best...the painting look so alive...i love it!!!
Every time I use my Hake brushes, I have to pick the fibres off of my work. They shed!
Hi There, traditional hakes do not last forever. The clamped and stiched brush head will deteriorate and shed hairs. Occasionally you get a "rouge" brush and it's just a case of replacing it. They do differ of course from one brand to another so obviously I am going to recommend the Proarte range. Either the Ron Ranson or my own signanure version which is exactly the same. One more thing, It is always worth pulling any stray hairs out of the brush head before using it. Hope that helps! Steve
Brilliant tutorial with great explanation of water to paint ratio. Thank you!
Pronounced harkay.
Your watercolor enigma book-worth every penny.
16.45 love that. Good to watch you again. Hope you are both well. Jan and Billxx
Muy buena acuarela🎉🎉🎉
Niiiiice! First!!!
Why is your burnt sienna so orange
Outstanding painting, I shall order the mini hake brush. Thanks for this tutorial
I love this mini Hake brush!!!! 🤩
Your quicj doodles are my 3 hour masterpieces. I'll get there. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome. You may be someone who likes to take care and time when painting. Nothing wrong with that but with watercolour the quicker you paint the better the result will be. Keep practicing! Best wishes, Steve
Gorgeous absolutely gorgeous 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you for your lovely comment Steve
Hi Stephen, Im having trouble getting the correct "plum color". it becomes very purple. I 've used Winsor Newton ultra marine blue and a light red from another company (mission gold). should I try other color brands? I also have Daniel smith thanks
Hi Linda, Don't worry if your "plum" isn't quite the same as mine. Light red in particular does differ across the brands and you may get slightly varied results. For example, if you use the Professional series light red by Winsor & Newton with ultramarine it produces more of a grey colour. The Cotman light red is much warmer and you end up with the "plum" that you see in my work. You can try getting some Cotman light red of course but I usually advise against having too many colours. It only adds to the confusion! Best wishes, Steve
Gorgeous ! thank you !
That was fantastic. Thank you Stephen.
Excellent!
That’s lovely
What I find really helpful in your videos is the advice about the correlation between water and paint and how much (or little) of each is needed to achieve the best effects. Thank you.
So few tutors talk about paint consitency and it is really important to get that right. Good luck with your painting, Steve
the process is really appreciated. Beautiful painting and great explanations behind it as watercolor can be tricky
beautiful painting
Fantastic show more hopefully
Thank you Stephen, for these little doodles. I’m really enjoying your channel and artistry. You explain everything so well. I’ve got a lot to learn, but you are certainly helping me !
Thanks for another informative lesson Stephen.
Another exceptional tutorial thank you Stephen. Watching in Australia. May I ask what brand paints you use to make your plum - in particular the light red? Thank you.
Hello Jean, I'm glad you are enjoying my videos on the other side of the world. I use Cotman watercolout tubes by Winsor & Newton. Officially student quality but to be honest they are exeptionally good for the price. The light red is a little "redder" than the Professional series which tends to go grey instead of plum when mixed with ultramarine. Artist watercolours are significantly more costly and not always better in my view. You should be able to get Cotman in Australia. If you need to ask anything else, fire away. Best wishes, Steve
@@stephencoates8165 thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate it.
Another fantastic tutorial thank you.
That was fantastic to watch. I learnt a lot. From Australia.
Great tip about matching colors. Thanks.
You are welcome, Steve
You make it look so easy 😂. thank you, I’ll try it today 🤩
Hello Linda, It's just thousands of hours of practice that's all! Just relax and give it a go. No two watercolours can ever be the same so if it doesn't look like mine don't worry. Try it several times until you get one you are pleased with! Best wishes, Steve
Fantastic! I have recently bought your book The Watercolour Enigma as I’m new to painting or drawing of any kind!!! I’m going through the exercises and loving it! Thank you
Hi, Enigma is now out of print sadly so I'm glad you have a copy. Please let me know how you get on. Best wishes, Steve
