    Explanation for why the bus can move without being connected to the overhead wires: Trolleybuses need the wires to move for more then a couple of minutes. When a trolleybus dewire's they can turn on a backup power unit (auxiliary power unit) to move. The only downside is that the distance it can go on auxiliary power is low as it is meant to be used at the depot, and for a bus to get out of the middle of the road to rewire when dewiring.

    • @jaycee330
      @jaycee330 Před rokem

      Newer trolley busses now have lithium batteries (like in other EV) that can charge while on the wires. If they dewire, they can then run on their batteries normally until they reach another point were they can wire again.

      Pantos are probably better for keeping up in a straight line, single lane. Trolley polls like this allow the vehicle to move between the two lanes so they can negotiate curbing, overtaking in the passing lane, etc.

    • @ricktownend9144
      @ricktownend9144 Před 2 lety

      Are there statistics anywhere of problems with trolleybus wires? The only time I ever saw a trolleybus dewired was back in 1982 in Athens, and the conductor just got out, replaced the pole on the wire and they were off again. I've never seen any problems here in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. Has anyone designed a 'self-wiring' pole? - I can't see that would be impossible these days with so much robotics everywhere - "Alexa - rewire my trolley-poles".... It would come in very handy for routes which are part trolley, part battery - rewiring on the move.

    • @ricktownend9144
