New to Guns - How to Choose a Red Dot for Your Pistol
zhlédnutí 932Před rokem
Episode 12: So, salesman Jimmy over here has convinced you to get a red dot on your pistol, but how do you know which one to get? What’s the deal with all these plates that come with optics ready pistols and different “Footprints” and “Bolt patterns”? Understandably, you just want to make sure you’re getting stuff that all works together in harmony. In this episode, Jimmy talks about making sur...
New to Guns - Red Dot vs Iron Sights for a Pistol?
zhlédnutí 3,5KPřed rokem
Episode 11: Pistols have been coming with iron sights for over a century and they look pretty simple, so they should be easier to use than one of those electronic red dot sights, right? Wrong! Red dots are the best aiming solution for a pistol and the way of the future. In this episode, Jimmy goes into the pros and cons of both iron sights and red dots on pistols to show you why. We’ve got more...

zhlédnutí 422Před rokem
Episode 10: If you’re new to guns, you may feel a bit embarrassed to have to ask how to load a pistol properly. Don’t be! Tons of people who aren’t new to guns actually do it wrong all the time and it can cause malfunctions or other issues with the gun when it comes to shooting. In this episode, Jimmy talks about how to properly load a handgun to make sure it’s set up to go “Bang” every time yo...
New to Guns - How to Buy Pistol Ammo
zhlédnutí 704Před rokem
Episode 09: Trying to use a gun without ammo is like trying to use a car with no gas - not going to do you much good! The variety in ammo choices that can be used in just one gun is probably a lot greater than you’d first imagine. In order to understand this, Jimmy goes into the basic construction of a bullet and how different manufacturers with their different rounds will change things for dif...

We all want drills that maximize learning and skill-building, but do so with a minimal amount of time and ammo (*cough cough* money *cough cough*). Instructor Pete takes Jimmy through the “Quarter Drill” with their carbines in this episode working marksmanship and developing your “Gas Pedal”. In other words, understanding the consequences (Or lack thereof) of slowing down or going faster at dif...
Ep. 23 | Pistol Warmup into Movement
zhlédnutí 605Před rokem
We meant to get into more movement in this one, but naturally, some of the concepts that came up during the warmup with instructor Mike were too hard not to talk about! Mike got “Mr. Relatable” Jimmy up to speed a bit in time to try out a short movement drill. Don’t be fooled, just because it’s a “Short” movement drill doesn’t mean it isn’t a bit tricky. Moving with a gun is simple, but it’s of...

“Going fast” doesn’t always mean “Moving quickly”. Rather, it’s about moving with purpose and eliminating as many inefficiencies as possible. Corey and Justin walk through their “Time on Target” drill for precision rifle which forces a shooter to build position, focus on natural point of aim, and execute proper shooting fundamentals on the clock. You don’t have to be into PRS or other long-rang...

What if we told you that “Slapping the trigger” isn’t necessarily the reason you’re missing your intended target with a pistol? Instead, it’s probably your grip! “Trigger Control at Speed” is almost a bit of a misnomer because the drill Brennan and Chris go through with Jimmy in this on-range podcast is all about building the best grip possible on your gun. Ep. 10 | How to Zero a Long-Range Rifle the Right Way
I was lucky enough to take a class from Corey with some friends. It was well worth the time and money. We had a 7 hour drive each way, and we plan on taking more. We took the into to long-range class and learned a ton. Everyone I met was noligable and helpful. They know how to shoot and how to teach, which not everyone can do. If you get a chance, take a class. I use what I learned almost every time I shoot now and have become a much better shot. Great job, Vortex, across the board
Great video, only a few comments and I understand the semantic part of my comment so relax. # 1 explaining the grip was great difference I teach is the strong hand grip is like a good hand shake and the support hand grip would be more like squeezing a tennis ball giving people a better relationship ( some instructors with their 70-30 , 60-40 which is not quantitative.) My fingers on the grip are the hinge and the palms the nut cracker so to speak to apply proper pressure on the grips. The term smashing the trigger has a different meaning connotation depending on what part of the country you are from. Most people would better understand pressing the trigger as smashing could mean excessive and indicative of slapping with force. So again not trying to be critical just terminology can be different depending on audience. Similar to people using the term weapon vs firearm and yes a firearm can be a weapon, however my firearm is used as a tool of self defense the media has demonized the term weapon and relating it to military use and people with weapons are criminals, so to avoid that I have a firearm. Correct terminology adds to credibility.
🙌🙌🙌
Job one is chronograph the load and then zero to 100 yards. 100 yards is important because it will reveal sight misalignment. This is simply a placeholder zero. Next, use a ballistics app to understand bullet drop compensation from the 100 yard zero to the long range distance. Now, shoot a tall target at 100 yards applying the bullet drop compensation needed for the long range distance and note if the bullet strikes are left or right of initial grouping. This will give recognition of the optic being level. Finally, shoot match grade factory ammunition and use it as a base line for the accuracy expected from hand loads. And do not shoot F class because it does not support the number one thing which is marksmanship development. That will come from shooting NRA any/any LR using bone and sling support. That discipline helps to understand how to achieve muscular relaxation and natural point of aim which are as essential to long range as is an understanding for what to do about the wind. There’s much more but this will get anyone off to a great start. How do I know? I was once a novice and now I am an American High Power Rifleman in Long-Range Award Winner. The bottom-line is marksmanship is knowledge and skill. The knowledge comes fast and easy, while the skill takes time to develop.
You said Vibra tite blue but held up vibra tite vc 3. Are they one and the same?
He was mentioning that it is similar to Blue Loc-Tite, but yes it is VC-3, and yes they are comparable when mounting red dots to pistols.

New shooters: Self diagnostics on all or die. Lol ShrekSobTac been sayn this. Hi. I bought the Vortex Defender ST for my Beretta APX A1, which screws should I use? Thanks in advance
You would use the supplied screws that come with the DPP footprint mounting plate as the screws go through the optic and the plate and into the pistol.
@@vortexedge4492 Sweet, thanks!
These Yanks are just a c-hair away from embracing the metric system
One of our local ranges run by DNR has those spinning steel targets as well as Steel targets that fall down when you hit them. Some of my favorite practice. :)
I don’t understand when someone just aimlessly shoots at range… Punn intended….lol
Buy both, learn both, get a second focal plane in moa to harvest game. Get a FFP in MRAD for target/ elr… if it’s beyond your capacity to become proficient in both, pick one and stick to it…
Smuck! 😂
Poor guy's just trying his hardest 😂😂
I love these talks. Shooting has evolved so much since I was in my prime and trained military/police. I still love to train.
Yes sir, training has evolved over time and one kinda has to move with it or they might get left behind. Thanks for tuning in!
Nobody ever talks about those few who like to clean their guns for hours to be white glove clean. That’s me, I kind of find it therapeutic and, relaxing.
how do you lock elevation screw on a razor? its on a m&p 10 and the rear sight is to close to the back of the sight
Hi! Does Vortex Venom red dot fit my Taurus G3c TORO? Thanks!
It should, you would need the Taurus® G3c / G3X T.O.R.O. Conversion Kit which can be found on their website. It will take the Viper/Venom and the new Defender CCW (which is more feature-driven optic for this application). shoptaurus.com/shop-by-model/pistols/taurus-g2/taurus-g3c-g3x-t-o-r-o-conversion-kit
@@vortexedge4492 thanks for your reply. Anyway my FA is a taurus g3c toro and it comes with 4 different plates already and its optic ready, No need to buy the conversion kit. Thanks and more power!
Always happy to help!
Anyone who has no real grasp of how to zero their RDS and can’t sit through a video aimed at effectively zeroing your pistola’s red dot isn’t serious about their pistolcraft.
Always great topics. It would have been nice to also add a 12ish lbs rifle to the mix.
Manual calls for 15in foot pounds I wasn’t sure about how small it was as I want to beat my optic up so I went until it clicked and a little more
Then, what are "clicks"? In movies they seem to be used for angular measure, distance in any direction, and time. What are "clicks"?
A military term which means 1 kilometer
In reference to this video, a click means a single position Advance or Retreat of any of the turrets, which equals a 1/4 MOA or .1 mrad.
The Joe Rogan experience of pistol optics.
Is it possible to walk extended distances using thermal rather than nods? I see a lot of comments saying nods are better for walking, but is that because thermal sucks at seeing the ground?
If you can easily find a place to shoot- Mil. If you have trouble locating somewhere big enough to use your rifle- MOA.
One of the worst "how to" videos I've seen. Next time skip the weed before hand.
Suffice it to say, hunters are generally shooting at shorter distances than long-distance target shooters. So, a hunter using MOA at 200yrds makes more sense than a PRC shooter at 1000yrd using MOA, due to it requiring more clicks than mrad.
Definitely a podcast.
Irons forever.
This debate always involves bias and trying to over complicate the other. Keep it simple, if you take away the unit or name…. At 100yrds One click on one =.25” while the other =.36”. Move the turret accordingly. The MOA is more precise, however, the MRAD has less turret travel to get to greater distances
This damn video is too long. Ain’t worth the time.
Dot sighting simplified. Point Of Aim (POA is where your dot appears on the target). Point Of Impact (POI is where the bullet hole on target is located). Adjustments clicks may be described in 1 minute of angle. This maths out to 1 tenth of an inch at a distance of 10 yards. Regardless of zeroing by human fire or mechanical fire (ransom machine, etc), apply the math. Your dot sight instructions should describe which direction to turn. Mine describes from POI, so my adjustment is to move the hole to the dot/POA/target center. So, in the perfect world, I want to move 1 inch (hole to center of target at 10 yards), the adjustment is 10 clicks. One tenth of an inch is roughly 1/4 the width of a 9mm casing. Personally, I adjust less than the math number, then shoot again. Using this method, I adjust until it's gone too far, then adjust back.
What do you recommend to use as your witness markings?
Not all the time as it depends on the specific application, as not all pistols require a plate to mount a red dot.
Diagnosing the anticipation is key. Practicing sight alignment/sight picture, focusing on the front sight, dry fire, moving the trigger finger only, and telling yourself, "Let the gun do the work." Pushing the gun doesn't help. Take it from someone who knows. Practice, practice, practice. ✌🏾
Do you always have to mount a plate the slide before putting a red dot on?
I bought the defender ccw for my Springfield echelon which screws should I use
As a musician, we talk a lot about building "muscle memory." This is very much the same concept.
Great stuff for beginners trying to learn! Thank you!
It is important to stress Mil Radians have nothing to do with the metric system. People get freaked out about that. It is a unit of measure just like MOA..
No 1 cuts their base board trim on the metric system in America. When they do.. mils will fly. The only reason the average American chooses mils is tactacool. Unless former military. Even though it is more simple in my mind.
Forgot it Guys.. When an American no longer reads a tape measure in inches.. then mil will be wfo. Period..
Dear God please hire a professional to do your lighting.

I ran out of travel on a Ruger Mark IV 22/45 when using a Vortex Venom. Required a 1 degree shim, seemed pretty standard when I asked Tandemkross in regards to their Shadow mount. Guess it's all just too flat without the shim.
More Top Flight info in a fun format. Once again "Vortex"... a massive salute. Love this series.
TOP FLIGHT video Mr Jimmy. This "Vortex Edge" series is just exccellent. "...loading mags suck" ... FLMAO. Too funny, and so true so true
If you zero at 25, the worst offset at closer distances will be less than 1". If you zero at 10, your offset at 25 will be around 6". That, plus shooter error, can put you off the chart. At 25, your off zero shots will be more obvious than at 10. If you can't get decent groups at 25 yards, know that limitation in a self defence situation. There is an attorney attached to every shot, especially missed shots. Seems obvious, but watching cops doing multi-mag dumps and missing worst than 95% of the shots show that they are taking shots way outside their actual skill level, making their gun a noise maker, only...
As to being way off because someone at the store may have been playing with the scope. What do you guys think about mechanically centering the scope? 1. Windage: Take it all the way left or right. Bring it all the way the opposite direction ( counting your clicks) Then bring it back half the total clicks. Windage can be done the same way. Except your taking all the way down or up. Then do the same procedure with elevation . I do this to all my scopes. Time consuming but at least I am comfirming the scopes Mechnical Zero. Any drawbacks to this process? Enjoyed your video! Vortex needs to address a few thinks with this optic #1 the 14 hour shut down time with a shake to wake optic is foolish should be more like 10 minutes would make the battery last a lot longer. #2 need better refresh rate. #3 Most people cannot feel or hear any click on the elevation or windage knobs.
