When Lena said "It doesn't want" I interpreted it that this being doesn't have the emotional drives we humans contain, but instead something akin to cognitive. Why did it change the terrain? Was it curious at the complex structures of DNA in the living organisms around it, and how they produced different results in the organisms, such as the flower colours and types from what was once the same breed of bush. Does it want to play with DNA? Get extremes or unique forms that it can't find or wants to see? Such as the croc with shark-like teeth. Or is it testing, researching, analysing the contents of our planet? Such as the bear, with its given enhanced hearing and impressive vocal cords indistinct from a human. Or, even worse. Is it researching humans? Analysing their responses to all this chaos and entropy? Who knows? Humans sure won't

This movie sucks ass. It's boring, confusing, and stupid. Monster design was kinda cool for that bear part tho.

Hard to make this evaluation without mentioning Fuchs, which you addressed in the outro, but I don't think this analysis is functional without it.

I *LOVE* firewatch. So beautiful, humane, emotional, relatable... beaitifully done and still evoking even more imagiation on part of the player. The end is so heartbreaking though! 😢 When is "Valley of the Gods" going to come out, my finger is on the buy button! :D

“Annihilation” and the game “still wakes the deep” were just IT when it comes to cosmic horror for me….dealing with something you just can’t fathom even if u want too is just utterly terrifying and extremely unsettling for me.

The Dark Souls 2 Majula track really made this video a 10/10 top an 11/10

Its destruction is a number one priority by all capable of seeing its nature. Even if its nature is only seen through human eyes.

And it would have been even better if Garland had kept the author's original ideas and didn't go off into a "2001" wonder-tangent at the end of the film.

The fingerprints changing and the tattoo appearing on all members of the crew, and even the bear to some extend, it reminded me of how Dementia erodes your identity until only a few fractured memories and characteristics remain. The loss of self is about the only thing i fear when thinking about growing older.

He described it's Ai in a weird way to put it simply the Ai has two brains one that knows where you are at all times and another one controlling the xenomorph the first gives hints to the other brain of where the player might be but after it reaches a certain threshold it will tell it to go check somewhere else. The alien ai brain also has a skill tree with over 100 nodes that after reaching certain areas of the game will start opening them up like for example the fear of the flame thrower you could go all game not using it but once you reach a certain part of the game it will auto stop being as afraid of it or if you choose to hide in lockers all the time the alien will learn and start checking them way more often. There are tons of really cool videos explaining them way better than I am doing but i will say its Ai is amazing and even all these years later still very good and way more massive than you would think.

As a fan of cosmic horror and sci-fi, I’m ecstatic to see this film getting the love and appreciation it deserves. I haven’t read the novels, but I plan to. The concept of the Shimmer is fascinating and horrifying. And the notion that the alien being’s mere *presence* is what caused all the mutations, and it might not understand itself (therefore it has no regard for the other beings or environments it encounters)…That’s pure cosmic horror.

I remember Critical Drinker's review of this movie and he was yapping on about how the alien didn't make sense and there was no logic to it. And I'm surprised that he was overlooking the blatantly obvious. It's an ALIEN. It's not supposed to make sense. The fact that nobody can get a grasp on what it is, what it's doing, or what it wants is the whole point of it's existence.

It would make no sense for the final Lena to be the doppelganger. The finale has far for effect with it being a changed Lena who knows who she is but at the same token knows she's not the same human any longer. It being the doppelganger would be far too predictable of an ending. I suppose the simple minded can think that thought tho😂

Am I the only person who thought this movie was kinda meh?

Annihilation sucks. Main character cheats on her partner and then pretends she’s going in there bc she loved him despite cheating on him multiple times and cheating again after being found out so she could say “we can’t do this again” as soon as he came. She deserved to die and it’s sad she lived but the others didn’t. Cheaters deserve suffering you can’t accidentally fuck someone else it’s a series of choices and she made her choices.

the dialogues of this movie broke the whole thing for me :/ i wanted to like it so much but its just not possible. its so strange because the dialogues in litteraly all the other movies and scripts of alex garland are just pure gold! so why not in this? i dont get it

“the alien” part of the soundtrack hits such a nerve with me, it makes me feels genuinely afraid and on edge when i hear it even as a stand-alone from the film and it’s context. i can’t even tell what it is about it that effects me so strongly but no other piece of music in horror has come even close to it

This movie was so visualy unsettling, Its one of those movies you watch once. I still have yet to watch it again...

In that scene where you go to the watch tower on the first day the music is actually called something is wrong.

Nitpicking here but I live in Alaska and it kind of annoys me how some of the script has to constantly remind you of the setting. Navarro announces herself as "Alaska Police" when entering a place which just sounds stupid. When she gets a call a guy introduces himself as being part of the "Alaska Coast Guard." Danvers has a patch that says "APF" on it and they never actually explain what it stands for, as the APF is not a real thing.

The movie completely lost me when she cheated on the dude. Can't have an asshole main character like that and expect the audience to give a fuck about anything. Girlboss garbage to boot. 1/10

I hate to be that guy, but the book is very very good. I don’t want to say better because I think the film is an incredible take on the book but PLEASE read the book.
