Glen Kinglass - Bikepacking with dogs in Scottish Highlands, Taynuilt - Bridge of Orchy
The idea for this overnight adventure was to find a remote and rough trail for me to bike and hike through. It also had to be not too long for my dogs especially older Sofie.
Atmospheric Glen Kinglass seemed to be an ideal option. Challenging for all of us with a possibility to find a shelter on the way and private hut to book at the end where I could just leave my girls to rest and cycle around on roads back to collect the car.
We have never seen a human for almost two days and faced all sorts of weather on the way.
The whole trail we did in video is amazing. Particularly Glen Kinglass is something special indeed!
The complete loop is 50 miles long and off road section which I filmed is about 21 miles full of steep hills, rivers to cross, wet or stony sections but also stunning views everywhere around.
I tried a new piece of kit in this video and same like in the last film I met some special guests too!
The film also contains the map of the route and mileage and times for those interested.
Mountain biking adventure through some beautiful but rough area of Highlands with my girls filmed in June 2024 in Argyll in Scotland.
PS.: I accidently increased the brightness on my camera at this trip so footage from second day is a little brighter than it should..
The whole movie content is a video - report of our story and experience only. Its not meant to be for guiding purposes but just to entertain you + make some memories for ourselves!!!!!!

Two days mountain biking trip with my dogs in beautiful part of Scottish Highlands. The idea was to enjoy a good spring weather conditions at the beginning of May but still avoid midges and other insect which can make life really hard up there later in May and pretty much all the time in summer months too. I've been across the bridge of the Cioch - the approach climb on the big slab was called Wall Works/walks (something like that) then we climbed directly up to the top after that. Lovely views of the Jura from the top.
From the top of Cioch? You surely can't see Isle of Jura from there..
Beautiful haunting Gaelic air is a lovely backdrop to this spectacular mountainous scenery. Melts your heart ! Well done guys and thanks. My favourite video ! 🙂
Thank you
Great video Jonus, love them all ! What wonderful adventures you have. Your videos take me to heights, views and places I could never hope to go. You are so enthusiastic about our Scottish mountains and lochs and talk about them with much love. Keep sharing your journies please as many appreciate them. Hodne stesti ! 🥃 aaaah !
Thank you Lorna for watching and commenting. Just back from a wee expedition with all my three dogs on Isle of Jura:-] It was Tilly's and Masa first time on Jura. The film should be ready in about three weeks. Cheers Jonas
Braw video
Thank you
Loved following tour adventures! Hope Sophie's leg is OK.
Thank you. Yes she is fine. It's always the wee crack on her paw which she develop if she runs longer in difficult terrain. I imagine it must be painful so I will try and get her some boots or something to protect her paws. She is not too fat but a little overweight which is a problem when running longer but I only feed her half of Tilly's doses. Thinking about to sterilize her may help her to get a little lighter as she had puppies already and we don't plan to breed her any more.. don't know yet
What a load of rubbish, great video!, but to keep perpetuating this legend is madness. Humans are like ants, cave in a mountain or shiny red can on the beach. We use too much imagination.
Thank you. I quite like these old legends but doesn't mean I believe in it of course. Well maybe a little bit:-]
Another great vlog, sofia may be old but she's a youngster at heart and could teach you a thing or two about diving.
Ok thanks. Sofie is a rubbish diver and I am a Jura diver:-]
Brilliant video, and well done for managing that challenging traverse with your wonderful dogs 👏👏👏
Thanks Dom. Your video inspired me to do it.
And thank you Jonas for returning the favour and inspiring me back 👍
Nice video. The west coast of Jura is so deserted. Thirty miles of nothing and nobody. I would love to walk it but probably not on my own!
Thanks. yes.. this was my best ever hike I ever done in my life. Totally recommend it. Hard but so rewarding..
Fantastic round trip. Never thought of a bike carrier for the road sections, great idea. Fabulous video.
Thank you. The trailer is a hard work but great help for dogs. You have to plan it well though as you can't use it if terrain is too difficult.
Is Sophie slowing a little with age maybe? She seems to be behind a lot of the time.
Thank you, Yes she was behind the second day a lot. It could be a bit of the age but as I say in video she had a crack in one of her front paws and that was painful. I will buy some boots or something to protect her paws for her for next big trip. I believe that may help her a lot. Unfortunately I couldn't use the trailer which I usually use to help them. The terrain in the glen is just too difficult for bike with the trailer..
Great wee adventure Jonas, did the same route other way round with my mate 8 years ago from Tyndrum to Taynuilt and got the train back in a day. Glen Kinglass is beautiful. 🥃 🍻👍
Thank you. It is beautiful indeed in the glen, feels really remote although doable in one day as you say and combine it with the train is a good option too.
Cracking video mate. Loved it, although I did feel sorry for your black dog...must be getting old? Great entertainment though ...I love that area. Looking forward to seeing you next time
Thank you, It could be a bit of the age but as I say in video she had a crack in one of her front paws and that was painful. I will buy some boots or something to protect her paws for her for next big trip.
nice one Jonas, looks like an amazing trip fella, the dogs did well.
Thank you Willie, its a good trail indeed. I am proud of both of them!
That’s brilliant, the kids made mince meat out of it, put most adults to shame.
Thank you from the whole Team:-]
Great video - loved it :-). Hoping to do the route next week 👍
Thank you. Hope it worked well for you.
Great video, looks like a great route too. Think ill be adding it to my list of adventures to do. Thanks for sharing. May your beer be cold, your whisky neat and your dogs paws fresh. 😊
Thank you very much!
Another crackling adventure Jonas🚴🐶🐶🔥 Aaaaaah🥃
Thank you Kevin. Hope you've been having a good summer.
Many Thanks Loved Your Video .I am Also a fan of Scotch Whisky. and your dog is Brilliant .
Thanks from both of us:-]
Fantastic adventure Jonas!!! - Looks like the weather was a little rough but looked warm in the wee bothy!! I really enjoyed the rougher section further up Glen Kinglass but we had it dryer than you! I have looked at the steep roads (theres one on each side) on the map as a launch pad further up into the mountains but it looks a little rugged!!! - umm maybe one day.. thanks for the plug!!!!! - ATB Tom
Thanks Tom. Weather was ok🙂 Found some wood in bothy so we had a great night with heavy rain outside. That one I was pointing to in video is steep but looks doable. Checked the map and the end of it is not far from Meal Buidhe where you would obviously had to push the bike for final scramble.. Looks like the trip for you in a nice day for summit camp🙂
HI Jonas, have a great holiday mate. Thank you for sharing this wonderful adventure with us. All the best Dave
Thank you Dave. Have a good summer.
There is a small bridge before the stepping stones, you should have used that.
Nice seeing you again. Great bike pack trip. Have a great evening 😊
Thank you
Great video as always Have you tried mushers secret (it's like wax) for her paws. It works well for my dog to protect the pads.
Thank you for an advice. No never heard about that. Will defo buy it and try.
At 09:14 I half expected you to find a ring!
Ha ha...good idea😁
Those are two fit and happy dogs! 🙂
Thank you
Brilliant video Jonas! - love your overnighters with the dogs, fantastic adventure.. ATB Tom
Thanks Tom. Just back today from another trip with girls and guess who inspired me for this route?🙂We cycled up Glen Kinglass! Not from the north along Loch Etive as you did with your wife though.. that looked really hard and a long hike a bike section in your film🙂 We did it from Taynuilt side and then up Glen Kinglass as you did. We spend the night in the old bothy you found at your trip. I mentioned you and your channel in my video🙂Love your films and the routes you explore! Well done! We 've never seen a human for almost two days doing this trail btw. Will be editing the film in next few weeks. Cheers Jonas
@@jonashubalekwhiskyandthewild Looking forward to seeing this one!! - we loved Glen Kinglass but I think you did the route right (unlike us!) by coming up from Taynuilt. I will be keeping my eyes peeled on my subscription feed!
I knew you’d keep that cancelled puppy, she’s going to have a great life with you 🦮
How did you know that Michele🙂 Honestly if there was someone good seriously interested at the week 8 or 9 when others were leaving... she would defo went too as that was the plan. However it was too late at the week 11. Somebody texted, it was serious but we took her off the market and kept her..🙂 Just came back from first family caravan trip up Highlands with her and she loved it. She swam first time in wee river btw. Thank you and have a good summer.
@@jonashubalekwhiskyandthewild when I saw someone had dropped out I just had that feeling. It used to happen with me when I bred cats🤣
fantastic episode,
Thank you
Fantastic, still can't believe I met you - my sincere apologies for forgetting your name, embarrassing. All the best you legend !!!
No problem at all! ''Johan'' was brilliant and it entertained my whole family when I played that back to them:-] Thanks again.
Another great adventure Jonas. Girls looked like they had fun as always. Managed to watch this on the TV as ma dogs were asleep so no barking 😂 Great wee bothy that Mhanach. Had a guid night with Robin a few years ago....Aaaaaaah 🥃
Thanks Kevin, It felt great to be out again! Usually go somewhere at least once a week but this was after long time when I was stuck with puppies in house. Love that area, so much space there..
Ah mate, glad you saw at least dome of them! That trail / road isn't driveable, but it is walkable. Heads to black corries lodge, then the trail ends and you have to tromp through the bogland of Rannoch Moor, you come out next to Rannoch station on the west highland line
Aha... you probably mean the route from Glencoe to Rannoch..
Oh and yeah you should check the ghost story about Lubeilt.
Yeah.. read it. Looks a bit mysterious up there I must admit.
Used to do pretty much that route as part of the tour de ben nevis mountain bike race. Was a great event. Not sure which is worse, the road climb out of Fort Bill to the WHW or the hike a bike after Lubeilt. I think the dog hurt her paw jumping down into the river crossing, had a slip. Great vid, enjoyed.
Thank you. I don't want to show off at all🙂 ..but I cycled up from FW with both dogs in the trailer for most of that hill! It was a torture but the worst for me was WHW section because of stones. The trailer only has quite thin smooth tyres.. There was a wee crack on one of Sofie's back paws which was causing her a pain. It grew together after a few days. Calcium cream helps on little wounds like that. Cheers.
Great video. Such a beautiful area. That wee minister didn’t look impressed at your drinking! The puppies were adorable, I think you might need a bigger trailer!
Thank you. Minister was drinking too but didn't want to be filmed🙂 I can't pull three dogs, that's for sure.
@@jonashubalekwhiskyandthewildThose ministers are so hypocritical!
@@Jennifer.4 🤣🤣🤣
Looked like a lovely adventure Jonas, nice route, tough going at the end, hope Sophies legs ok... Really enjoyable as always, all the best. 🥃🍻👍
Thanks David. She is fine. There was a wee crack on one of her back paws which was causing a pain. It grew together after a few days. Calcium cream helps on little wounds like that. Cheers🥃
Great video and nice trip. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you
what a great video and a beautiful trip.
Thank you
I love your videos. We have been to Scotland (we live in High Wycombe) every year since 2014 but can't make it this year. Thankfully, your videos can give me a taste of that magnificent place. Thank you.

Thank you both very much.🥃 ATB from all of us🙂
Excellent stuff, that looked a big trip! I hope the road improved after we met but I doubt that. Great meeting you Jonas you legend, look forward to watching your next adventures! - Kenny
Thanks Kenny, it was good to meet you there and yes it was a little better towards the end. I followed the track right to Mamore lodge where I joined the wee tarmac road.
If Tilly could talk, she'd say, they are both nuts. I'm the only sane one. She's such a lady.
Ha ha.. hate to say but Tilly barked once on one Lady on WHW on this trip!!! She was soooo guilty for the rest of the day😁
That was brilliant Jonas and lovely to see Tilley back out, I enjoyed checking out your route on the map and maybe hike that way one day. ATB 🥃👍🏕️🍻🙏
Thanks Dave🙂🥃 Kinlochleven - Spean Bridge would be a good hike I think. There are also trains and buses operating in the area so you can easily get there from down south.
Superb 👏 👏👏 great to you and the girls back out on adventures...
Thank you
Enjoyable watch as usual. Well done Tilly. The trees at Luibelt are always a welcome sight when heading for Meanach. I can remember when Luibelt still had a roof. Wouldnt camp there. It has a reputation. Last time I was at Meanach the weather was awful. I usually camp but stayed in the bothy. Had it all to myself😊 Years ago it had an upstairs if I remember that rightly.
Thank you. Yeah I heard the scary story about Luibeilt.. I love the area though and Meanach bothy is one of my favourites. Also like to go sometimes to these places in rain in weekdays... no filming, just to enjoy the solitude🙂
@@jonashubalekwhiskyandthewild Last time I was there the rain was so bad it turned all the burns into rivers. Getting to Steall was well dodgy. Too wide to jump and thigh deep water.
thank you so much for this video. It took me back to the 15th 1995. When I also climbed. the “Cioch” direct! It was my first ever climb and my first ever abseil ever! The top, I took a Samurai sword up there with me! For a little pose photograph. It was a great climb from Glen Brittle campsite, we set off at 9 o’clock in the morning and we’re on top at 4:30 in the afternoon and back at camp at 9 o’clock at night quite a day! Great video by the way, thank you
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching and sharing your Cioch story with me. It's a special place up there and my very favourite rock feature I ever been to.
Watching this was like reliving a nightmare! I walked it a few years ago, from Fort Augustus to Newtonmore over two days. Punishing east wind in my face and relentless sun. Full pack. Hard work! Wouldn't want to do it on a bike.
I can imagine it can get really hard in bad conditions up there. I had good weather but my problem in the pass was the amount of snow. It was more than expected. I do these trips for feeling after:-] Cheers
Ah I see you found the Terrace by the direct route. I found it by traversing across from the left! Bill
Yeah.. I was glad I found it at all as I had problems with route finding that day and not much energy left in the tank:-]
You can of course, find the terrace under the slab and either do Arrow Route or traverse up and left to the neck above the Cioch. Either way is less involved than going up the gully Bill
