VA2CST - Calibrate the Icom IC-7300 oscillator with reference clock like WWV or CHU Canada
PLEASE READ HERE : This is a different technique to calibrate the IC7300 (and many other radios) using a different method with the use of the integrated audio scope. MORE ↓ ↓ ↓
It won't use the integrated Calibration Marker of the IC-7300 to zero beat the oscillator so it can be a usefull technique for radios that do NOT have that Calibration Marker feature just like the IC-705.
For radios that do not have a audio scope, you can get a free windows application called Friture here : friture.org/
The goal will be to watch the audio trace (and also listen to) generated by the CW oscillator of your transceiver while listening to the carrier of WWV or CHU Canada clocks by switching from CW to CW-R.
So any radio that has CW/CW-R or CW-L or CW-U and a tight CW filter can use that method.
IMPORANT to know the the oscillator values found in my IC-7300 WILL BE DIFFERENT than your IC-7300 as they all have different ajdustments. It is going to be your task to adjust by adding or removing a couple % on the oscillator to achieve a balance between the CW and CW-R mode on the audio scope.
You can always revert ANY settings to their original values by holding the setting button itself and hit Default so no worry to mess something in your radio.
--
Additional to the notes that are in the video, you CAN also use a separate audio oscillator (calibrated) and match the 375Hz CW tone and then zero beat your transceiver BY EAR.
Online audio oscillator can be found here:
onlinetonegenerator.com/
or
www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/
The goal is to listen to BOTH tones (radio and computer or calibrated oscillator to a speaker) at the SAME time with your ears, touch the VFO on your radio (any radios) by a couple Hz and zero beat the tones. Once you do not hear beating of the tones, you are on frequency. Then you will be able to know if you need to add or substract value to the transceiver oscillator.
--
Hope you find the information helpful in this different technique of calibration and thanks for watching !

    For a few days now I have been testing an IC-9700 with the given configurations. It works great, compliments! Now I'm still wondering (I don't know the 9700 well yet): 1-How do I find out the rough RIT settings with the IC-9700 ? Also using RIT ? 2- I have noticed for some time that some stations vary greatly in frequency on the band. I normally always leave then the transmitter frequency constant (of course + and _ doppler). Because this is fr the other station the most convenient. And vary ( follow ) via RX main dial. Is it possible also follow these stations RX with the 9700 via the main dial ?

      Thanks for your comment and appreciation, to respond to your questions : 1) I am not sure I understand correctly your question but the way I use to do it was to track myself first, this is where I can adjust the RIT accordingly so I can hear myself. Then I can track other stations with the VFO wheel. 2) There are stations how do NOT have doppler control and they track everything manually so in that case, It is going to be difficult for you to tune on them because they are always shifting on frequency. I don't know if I ansered your questions but thanks again for your appreciation. It took a while for me to make that video and I am always grateful when other find the information valuable.

      I don't think so since it's "line of sight" direct communication, we are not using those layers for getting to another terrestrial station. That comes directly from the satellite. Solar flares might impact reception though. But that is my interpretation. I might be wrong...

    I just built one of these and tested with nano VNA meeting or exceeding the results on TRX bench. As well built as yours is it will have no difficulty with common mode rejection. The wire diameter will not affect the inductance much. I did a through test with VNA to get |S21| and |S11| at several frequencies. K6JCA shows how to calculate the power gain (loss) from those parameters . 1- the power gain is the power dissipated in the balun if it is feeding a 50 Ohm load. The balun dissipates 1/2 Watt at 160 meters and progressively more power to almost 4 Watts on 10 meters assuming 100 Watts in. On 6 meters it would dissipate almost 7 Watts. For higher frequencies fewer turns with larger wire would reduce this power dissipation at the expense of not attenuating common mode at lower frequencies. W5PZT

    The SWR doesn't tell you much about the quality of a balun: what you measure is the reflected power but you don't know how much goes out the other end and how much ends up in losses. Furthermore, the main task of a balun is to offer a balanced port (or vice versa) and this certainly does not prove to you a SWRmeter. A VNA is not mandatory: to get an idea of the losses using a SWRmeter test the balun by holding the balanced port open and then shorting it. In those cases the SWR must be infinite: the power that is not reflected ends up in losses (check a table to convert SWR to dB). Other method: make two identical balun, connect them to each other through the balanced port; with a wattmeter read the exact power of the tx and then read it again with the two baluns in the middle and connected to each other in that way. Divide the difference between the two measurements by two. Finally, to verify that the balanced port is really balanced, I recommend my article on the balun-choke test: you can find the link on my QRZ page (sorry: it's in Italian. I hope Google translate can help you). 73s.

    • @Aleziss

      I understand all of what you are saying. My goal with the SWR testing is because I had unkown PTFE wire and I wanted to see if it would have a bad mismatch of impedance. I KNOW this is NOT the goal of a balun. I have another video where I do test the common mode attenuation and it is really efficient and this mode of wiring is well documented for a proper choke. Last thing I would need to check, as you mention, the efficiency of the balanced work such device provide. I will look into it. If you read the video description, you will see where I got all the info from Peter's TRX Bench where he got all the info from Wolfgang DG0SG www.dg0sa.de/ now your turn, all in German. A LOT of information about baluns, chokes and measurements. Family graciouly left Wolfgang website up after he passed away. 73

    What's the purpose of the resistors? What would happen without them?

    • @Aleziss

      so the resistors are there to load the balun choke to the proper impedence and have the proper measurements. Since it is a 1:1 balun choke, it requires 50ohm load. If you look at the description, the link explain what value resisitor is needed depending on the radio of the balun and how to correct the gain of measurements.

    • @Aleziss
      @Aleziss Před rokem

      Hello Herbert, when you do not use the -vvv switch, rigctld get connected but you get a blank screen, if rigctld would not connect, you would see an error message or rigctld window would shut off. There is another important thing is that the FT991A is NOT a dual band radio and cannot be configured as seen in my video. Your 991A would be setup as Simplex TRX for the radio type. In that mode, it might work a little bit clunky because rigctld has to monitor when you press on the PTT so it changes band and when you let go the PTT return to the other band. For that to work, you need to set PTT status at Read PTT. I am not sure how this will work with the 991A as I have never used one. But my guess would be to change the configuration in gpredict. I think your rigctld works if you see the status ok when the -vvv switch is there, if you remove it, it will also be connected but won't show it to you. If you want to see more, you get set a -vvvv or -vvvvv, I would not recommand for regular use because it generate a lot of diagnostic stuff but just for the sake of it, you will be sure you see activity and rigctld talks with your radio. Good luck, I hope this will work for you ! Claude VA2CST

      thanks for your appreciation ! I did the calibration from 3.5 to 29.7MHz using the aligator clip you see in the video, did the open, short and connected the 50 ohm dummy load on to the aligator clip. It is not super precise but I think it is giving a good idea of the performance of the balun and specially I could compare both the original balun and the one I did build (which works way better than the original one). I would not use aligator clips on higher frequencies, even at 29MHz I could see the reading started to derail a little bit, maybe half of a dB error but for what I wanted to test, i'd say it is not a big deal and it will give you a rough idea on the performane of your balun. I did a contact with a station, talked for a couple minutes and the other station told me I could take the frequency. I logged the contact in qrz and started to read some stuff while keeping the radio at that frequency and I heard the /AM station in Germany ! I wasn't sure of what I heard, I waited a moment to understand clearly what he was saying and other station quickly responded before me but I was there when he did his first transmission, I wasn't just sure of what I heard ! Hello Claude, great video, compliments ( and thanks of course fr it hi :-) ) ! In / after 10 you show an adjust with offset. A question, do you perhaps know if this is also possible with a FT-991 ? During doppler shift corrections and L button active ? I have this the question because you did perhaps test it with a 991. 73 Leo PC1L.

    • @Aleziss
      @Aleziss Před 2 lety

      Hi Leo, unfortunately I do not test with the 991. I am not sure the 991 has satellite mode though so not sure how this will work. If it does work anyway, it should work the same with the L button active, use the RIT on the 991 to fine tune the receive end only and not the TX. If the 991 has no satellite mode, I am affraid it is a different configuration that is required. I'll see what I can find about the 991 but it will be difficult since I do not have one to test.

    • @Leon55494
      @Leon55494 Před 2 lety

      Last but not least, a small addition .. I know, of course the 991 is not a duplex radio but you can set it like that ( doppler functions: also during transmission the corrections will be executed, it works then too ). For full duplex to use a second (t)rx. As far as everything works very well for VHF / UHF satellite and it may be worthwhile to work with the (CLAR) function and the L button in gpredict ( as with 9700 RIT ). But can not find a adjust / configuration method for the 991 that this works. Also I tried hamlib versions above 4 and -x 1 in the configuration files ( rigctld ) ..
