Modulus ROX-15 Master Volume DC Blocking Mod
So I can continue to use the Sovtek valves I've gone ahead and put in the Modulus provided DC blocking modification to the master volume pot.
As explained in the video, this actually isn't a really significant issue - and wouldn't have been an issue at all if I'd used the Modulus preferred JJ EL84's or according to my tests the Chinese Golden Dragon branded ones I have, but....

Modulus ROX-15 Master Volume DC voltage issues
zhlédnutí 108Před 28 dny
Trying to resolve to DC voltage on the Master volume pot, which results in a rustling sound as the volume pot is turned. Thought it was just a poor capacitor (remember I'm no technician, so don't really know what I'm doing) so wasted my time changing those! Then messaged Modulus for some advice from the experts.... paul-williams7456.weebly.com/
Modulus Rox-15, Tone Boost Kit: Final thoughts, Test voltages, Playing demo

As the title states, this is the final video in the Rox-15 build, but does include the asked for playing demo (albeit my bad playing) and measured voltages, requested in the comments of the last and previous videos. The playing demo might not be that useful as the microphone limiter keeps the SPL's fairly constant, but I'm too lazy to sort out an independent sound recording to merge to the vide...

Amp developed a bad noise issue, so needed to do some diagnostics and in the end replaced one of the caps, after re-flowing all the joints. I also re-wired all the pots so I could access the underside of the board in future. Many thanks to Michael at Modulus for his patience & guidance through this - great backup as always. paul-williams7456.weebly.com/

The final stages of the amp build, but, with a failed first test drive, a couple of disasters, followed by a successful test drive - even with my poor guitar playing and dreadful sound recording from my phone with the mic getting overloaded. Next on to converting the old Marshall combo cabinet to use this chassis and try and get a better sound recording done. paul-williams7456.weebly.com/

More chassis related wiring: Speaker outputs, starting on the valve sockets, output transformer primaries. Question 1: do you prefer the speeded up sections with or without the 'incidental music'? Question 2: is it actually worth doing, blow-by-blow build clips as this has taken me far longer than it would normally have done had I just discussed the work I'd done retrospectively? Plus I seem to...

Finish populating the turret board and do final component checks. I don't know the value of these video clips for people, there is over an hour here condensed into nine minutes, whereas in the previous video clips on the Supa Deluxe build, I did most of the wiring off camera as in the clip below: czcams.com/video/ztr_945b-Go/video.html Do let me know if there is a preferred option, this style i...

An error in the wiring layout noticed with the 'Link' switch, so I start with a brief chat about that and then on to start populating the turret board. Now because I'm limited to 15 minute clips, putting components on the board will have to be done over several parts - unlike the build of the Supa Deluxe, where I did this work off camera. Let me know which you prefer? Watching these back I thin...

Starting to mount the hardware - Valve sockets, earth tags & turret board stand-offs. Sorry about the worse than usual ending, I'd almost finished putting the clip together when we had a power cut as I only use freebie editing software I don't get auto back-up and as a consequence, couldn't be bothered to start again, so this is more thrown together than usual! The first part of clips showing the build of the Modulus ROX-15 (inspired by the VOX AC15). This is my second kit from Modulus and it seems that the kits that peak my interest are the ones where there is no real information on them - even on the Modulus website there is only one picture and that would appear to out of date as the facia I received with the kit isn't the same (but it is nicer, so...

A look inside the Laney VC15 - 110 combo. This is a mark 1 version, the mark 2 has a digital reverb, the Ext speaker socket moved to the right of the rear panel and the effects loop have a sensitivity switch built in. Mk1 has a parallel fx loop whereas later versions have a series fx loop which is more useful for most people. It’s a stretch to say it’s similar to an AC15, the preamp is Marshall-like with a cold clipper stage. It’s got a LOT of gain on the drive channel.

    It's interesting that you appear to be doing product testing for the design, I wonder if they layout diagram has been updated after all your issues?

      @neilmeansneil I don't know how many of the ROX-15 kits have been sold, but Modulus say they've not had this issue flagged by anyone else. Though, to be honest, as far as I'm concerned the only real issue is the Boost Switch. As for the DC at the master volume, this wouldn't have been a problem if I'd used JJ valves! As stated, the matched pair I'd bought some years ago turned out to be wildly 'unmatched' so couldn't be used in the application.

    Thanks Paul for the follow up video and posting the voltage chart. I think this additional information will be very helpful for anyone interested in building this amp. I am considering building one after my current amp build is finished. (Fender Blonde Bassman)

    These amp build videos have been absolutely great. Invaluable to those of us who are interested in starting such a project but are a little intimidated. Really appreciate you taking the time to document the process and the troubleshooting involved. Nice tone too! (Also very interested in a kit amp sound round-up video!)

      Thanks for the comments, I never really wanted to create any videos, but there was nothing available for the two Modulus amps I was interested in building, so did these.

    Just play some chords and dial in some different tones with and without using the master to give us an idea of what the amp is capable of.

    Another potential buyer of this kit here, thanks for making this video series, they've been very useful. Still can't decide between the Rox 15 or a TubeTown kit. I don't need 15w's to noodle in the spare bedroom.

      I can't offer an opinion on Tube Town, though I used to buy valves from them in the past, but Modulus have provided great support very promptly to any issues I've had.

    Good troubleshooting job Paul. Those generic silver mica caps (just marked "SM") can definitely cause issues. I have been considering building this kit and those would all be replaced with CDE silver mica or Vishey ceramic disc caps. How about some more playing videos so we can hear what she sounds like. 😎

    Hi Paul, well done in completing the build. I have followed your journey on the amp from the beginning and found it very informative. Where you were testing the amp towards the end, do the instructions for voltage measurements come comllete with the amp, or is this aspect due to your expertise in working on valve amps in general? If the latter, would you be able to post the measurement details to enable myself and perhaps other people might find it helpful, if they are going to build this particular amp from modulus. Thanks again for highlighting the whole amp build process.

    • @paulwilliams4984
      @paulwilliams4984 Před 2 měsíci

      Hi, thanks for your comments. One of the issues I have with Modulus kits is the fact that there is nothing but the layout diagram & pick-list supplied, so there are no target voltages to measure the build against. However, as part of a discussion with Modulus about the build, they did provide a voltage chart for me to fill in, this was for each valve socket pin & each of the main filter capacitors and ask for a picture of the completed work - to which Modulus stated the wiring looked fine as did the voltage results. I can certainly show this when I do the final thoughts video later, just waiting on a few bits to finalise the cabinet conversion. One of the reasons I show some close-ups going along the board is because there are no pictures on the website for this kit, unlike some of their others.

    Hi Paul, looks to be an interesting build & progressing well. I'm thinking of this kit also from Modulus. How have you found the assembly instructions as part of the build? Steve

    • @paulwilliams4984
      @paulwilliams4984 Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Steve, unfortunately there are no instructions supplied with the kit, you just get the layout (not a schematic, but a visual plan) to build against. Please be aware that I am by no means an expert, or even that technically competent from a trained perspective - I just like making things and as always you need to be aware that there are lethal voltages within these amplifiers.

      Yes, I'll be putting less detail into future clips. TBH, this would be a two day ( 4 hours per day) build for me normally. Just that there was no info/internal pics about this kit, even on the Modulus site - so went a bit OTT!

    • @paulwilliams4984

      Yes, that's an option, though it does tend to leave an uncomfortable ridge and with a nylon strap you'd need to melt the edge to stop it fraying.

  • @RAfiote2
    @RAfiote2 Před 7 měsíci

    Hi, I dont understand the issue with the two 100r. It should only reference the virtual CT for the heaters to a positive voltage. You had different bias voltage on pin 8 of the power tubes with them?

    • @paulwilliams4984
      @paulwilliams4984 Před 7 měsíci

      With the 2 x 100r resistors in place the cathode resistor measures only 42 ohms, giving a significant increase in the bias current.

    • @paulwilliams4984
      @paulwilliams4984 Před 7 měsíci

      Looking back over the results with the 2 x 100r resistors in place, I got the following measurements; Voltage drop across cathode resistor = 7.2 volts, so divided by the 42 ohms of the measured resistor is 0.1714mA which is halved as it's serving two valves, so 0.086mA. The average cathode to plate voltage here was 243v, so multiplied together gives 20.8watts at idle, well over the 14 watt max for a 6V6GT (150% ish).

    Hi I have built a JTM45 using Modulus transformers and chassis Using solid state rectifiers and 100uf smoothing caps it sounds very sweet on clean. I hope you don't mind me saying so that the heater wire should be lying down, you might get to much hum the first pre amp tube is very sensetive

    • @paulwilliams4984
      @paulwilliams4984 Před 7 měsíci

      No problem at all, the signal tube heater wires can be laid down to the back of the chassis if that proves to be quieter, I'll move those around for minimum hum when it's up and running. Many older Fenders have the heater wires positioned like this as it gives the most separation from the signal wires - I'll try both and see.
