Analog, plugins, and the ways we use them to make our art memorable.
Announcing q.632 - Analog-Phased EQ
Kush proudly announces q.632: an EQ plugin it didn’t design, using EQ dsp it didn’t develop.
Demo, Buy or Subscribe today at thehouseofkush.com/store
q.632 is a gently repackaged update of the beloved Magpha EQ, an obscure and defunct plugin whose unusual phase-modeled filters earned it a reputation for smoothness and fidelity that rival what comes out of $9,000 analog mastering EQ’s.
Spotting an opportunity to revive Magpha’s lovely tech, Kush reached out to John Flynn, the mastering engineer who developed it, and secured an exclusive license both to the Magpha plugin and its underlying EQ algorithms.
q.632 is the first Kush product to leverage Magpha’s EQ dsp, adding extended gain range, an updated Preset Manager and Apple Silicon compatibility. Magpha EQ’s core dsp (and tightly phased sound) remains untouched, and will slowly become incorporated into all of Kush’s products.
TL;DR: If you want a dead simple, minimalist EQ that does zero damage to any part of your sound no matter what you do with it, q.632 is the one to get.

Using Distortion as EQ?? LG Drive, Kush, and Tube Madness...

We didn't invent the use of "Filtered Saturation" as a radical way to shape tone, but we've arguably made the warmest, fuzziest sounding tool for the job. If your bass doesn't cut thru the mix, if your vocal is too sharp (or too dull), if your mix feels like a room full of accountants in grey suits discussing their favorite ways to depreciate office equipment... you need LG Drive. Or a brain al...

Me too, i have tinnitus since i can remember.
Im glad youre ok brother
Great exercise...but why do I feel like using the Electra is the exact opposite of this? (no freq. labels, quick and easy to sweep, use your ears instead of numbers?)
While everything you said is true...isnt it also true that if you cant get your midfield speakers about 4 feet from the wall (due to room size) then you are better off getting them as CLOSE to the wall as possible to minimize proximity effect?
I have a severe loss in my right ear, starting from -10db on 1k, maxing on -90db on 6k and rolling back in a little with -70db on 8k (don't really know much on the upper register). But since my left ear is all good, I do an eq compensation only in my right ear, but of course, I cannot go all the way and boost 90db on 6k. I found out that putting like +12db on that 6k (imagine a graphic eq) and following the curve of my loss that way, starting by like +6db on 1k and 6db on 8k or something, thing seem to get more balanced, and since I'm in monitors, my left ear kinda compensates and picks up some of those frequencies I'm boosting, but somehow my brain localizes them by coming from the right side. I turn that eq on when I feel like I need to check the mid/highs and will probably turn off when doing more automatic parts of my mixing. But I do often leave it on for longer mixing sessions, I feel like it's helping. That's how I deal with it, besides having others's trusted ears to help me as well. But anyway, great video, great information for us deafies.
Im 100 percent with you on setting vocals in last
Love your channel and love your plug ins ive used so far. The clariphonic is one of my fav plug ins ever and ive used a ton.
Quit looking at the scope and do something the wrong way for once but just sit there and listen to it sorry I really don't know how to say what I'm trying to say
Listen to a subtle pulse while concentrating on the ring in your ears the pulse will cause the ring to have brakes in it the more you concentrate on that the bigger the brakes scared eventually the Rings is gone not in all cases

Kush, where've you gone? It's been a while... :/
Per my 'famous last words' at the end of the last vid I posted: I'm still rebuilding my frickin' studio. I'm extremely close to being done and getting back into a flow. Started recording new songs about a month ago, got new speakers coming tomorrow... I could probably spend a half dozen episodes just talking about the journey, I think I lost my mind, twice!
Looked so much after this! I forget Kush brand name and so happy I found it again. It sound like pure magic!

Thankyou !
I think every aspiring producer/mixer/songwriter/whatever should ask himself one question: do I make music to touch peoples souls/bodies or just to get a compliment from people of the branche? Many often I get an impression that many people (read: professionals) think of music production in a prescribed way that has little to do with actual music content. Music is not that linear. For every CZcams all-know's wisdom there's an example of things working great in an other way than it's stated. Keeping a ,,layman,, innocence in oneself and observing other peoples reactions is a good way of learning the craft and art.
Really low level monitoring can help.... Also rather than trying to make a shock like that track.... If I really like the way the song was mixed kind of has similarities in sensibilities... You can play with seeing if they sound like they would flow well from one to the next in the same same album... You can play with high pass and low pass filters... See if the mid-range is as smooth and balanced... What's the transition like from the lows into the mid-range! Not are the highs the same, But do they compliment But to this sit well in the same way.... Not trying to match EQ curves or anything like that... They don't have the same instruments but are the instruments and voices balanced in a similarly harmonious fashion...
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I know that this is a 4 year old video, but brains, facts and the ability to communicate so brilliantly never grows old 🙂 Having been away from recording for a couple of years, I needed to re-learn that less is more. You just saved my vocals on a couple of new tracks, and for that I thank you 🙂
Never liked mixing in a bus comp, I put it in the last step. For stereo balancing and density, yes.
Thank you so much... your hand movements really clicked with me in terms of how to hear/feel the groove that was being added by each compressor. Very enlightening!
it seems like my right ear has a low pass filter so when im listening to music the voice always sounds to the left (and other higher frequency sounds )
my man kush! a while back u recommended kikoko mints to me... i was curious if u still like those or found better? im hoping for a super mild controllable ride. thx for the advice!
Yeah. Use the Bass in cigar with the pads and rest of melody melody to establish tendon and release... The cigar can make it go somewhere.... If one of them is going to be on loop repeat.... Something needs to be doing something else in in relationship to the loop repeat one.... Will change the amount of tension and resolution and take it to more than one quadrant. Didn't have to be the bass.... Or just the bass....
I really like the presentation. It's great to hear an American that doesn't need to shout.
Where'd you go man, CZcams learners need you
The struggle of my entire life. It makes me sick!! I was thinking today about how builders build a house and how I should look at writing songs like that.
I cant hear 17khz and i am only 20, am i cooked?
Save your ears for another day 🎶🎶
great
Great learing moment! We're so used to putting an effect on an instrument and just leaving it there throughout the entire song. You're suggestion for creating motion and depth in the song by adjusting the effects throughout the song is golden! Such a simple concept yet something I had never considered until now. Thanks man!
Wish I could like this more than once. Great video, thank you.
Jesus... I came here for the mixing advice, I stayed for the charisma and mesmerising way of speaking (and the mixing advice).
Me too! 😂😂
