For CWG - Crowbar - Sever The Wicked Hand - February, 2011 There are none so heavy as Crowbar. There are none so ripe with a full on thickness of righteous indignation as Crowbar. There are none so immense in snarling wisdom as the downtrodden and still-marching Crowbar. There are none so blood-fueled and groove-ruled as Crowbar. There are none more backed by an unwavering strength and earth-shaking breakdowns as Crowbar. In essence… In absolute fucking certainty, Crowbar has conquered Metal many times over, led by the fearlessly dynamic Kirk Windstein as only one of the Old Gods can. In this year of our certain doom, 2011, Crowbar has let loose upon the masses their ninth studio album, Sever The Wicked Hand. Laying down the work on the Sludge Metal Brooding Masterpiece is the vocally monstrous Kirk Windstein, tailoring the winds of Earth to his screaming need, and never the other way around. Matthew Brunson, a fellow member of Kingdom Of Sorrow, gruels alongside Windstein on guitar, along with Patrick Bruders of Goatwhore on bass and Tommy Buckley of both Soilent Green and Christ Inversion on drums. Epic lineup for this dark path-walking, shrine-building, truth-speaking work of Heavy Metal brilliance. I am biased, and I am unwilling to take any Objective view on this album. The whole medium of Metal runs in my body and thru my blood just as The Hunt drives the Great White. I know nothing else but a progressive momentum toward an unblemished superior finality, and so I will not bow down to any retrospective look at their catalog as a whole or the sobriety of Crowbar in any fashion. It is all as it has ever been, and the sobriety of Kirk Windstein is a tearing siren that need not be dwelled upon. Let the man do as he will, and let the album play on as it has. Sever The Wicked Hand is a masterpiece unto itself and need not be ridiculed with some egalitarian tirade on the irrelevant. Sludge Metal is, and has been, defined by the very solid footsteps of Crowbar for centuries. Many have come and done fairly well within this dark land of heavy things moving with no knowledge of what they crush. Nor do they care… Yet ten times as many have failed at the same because the sound and emotion of it all can rarely be duplicated. It can only be felt with a crushing blow. If one stands tall afterward, then a life has been changed. If not, let them die slowly. Crowbar knows no capitulation, and has altered so little of their sound from the band’s long ago formation, that to love one album, is to at least give respect to the rest. And with that, we have come to be graced with Sever The Wicked Hand; Twelve tracks of uncompromising Southern-Bred Breakdown Groove (barring one touch upon the ethereality of it all with A Farewell To Misery, a piano-driven melancholy, with a light brooding quality). Six years to the day after the phenomenally deep and romanticized epoch that was Crowbar’s Lifesblood For The Downtrodden, we have Sever The Wicked Hand. In that time, we have witnessed the absolute carnage of Hurricane Katrina, as the beast nearly devastated to oblivion New Orleans, the residual birthplace of Crowbar, and the sum of the Sludge Metal Movement. We have seen the undeniable total corruption of every governmental breath suck in every feasible token of decency from its American constituents and exhale nothing in return. We have mourned in whiskey and wine-fueled excess the deaths of the baritone cynical god and front man of Type O Negative, Peter Steele, that Elf Lord that may have actually danced with the Devil himself, Ronnie James Dio, and although the timeline has expanded some, Dimebag Darrell is among the immortals that was taken far too soon. Others could easily, and have been mourned in these six years, and to them we salute, but I believe the point is well taken, that Sever The Wicked Hand holds a mighty weight in both its relevance in our time and the seriousness in which the album as a whole should be taken. There is a solid and forceful crunch from Isolation (Desperation) thru the entire album until its ending, Symbiosis: an all-encompassing closing theme that is perfectly rounded out with the old adage of Crowbar’s signature delayed emotional riffs, the onset of antiquity while holding the gates with a firm set of fists. Crowbar has lost nothing in nine albums, nor centuries of warring and indulging. Tracks such as Liquid Sky And Cold Black Earth and Echo An Eternity are HEAVY fucking testaments to their form: The slow monolithic migration of sound from life until death, the pure essence of Sludge Metal, that ray of light always on the horizon. Move slow and it seems to come towards, yet move quickly and it vanishes. Crowbar mastered the art many years ago, and yet they continue to surpass even their own accomplishments in the groove. Every track is a standout work, all varied and all passionate. From the original depleting drill of hauling the tides from ebb to flow in a long breakdown of pure heaviness all the way to righteous Punk sets, blasting quick beats and quicker riffs, all is there. Sever The Wicked Hand will win few new brothers in arms, yet the true fans, those with an organ that beats in lip-snarling breakdowns, will love the album from beginning to end. To please the masses as requested… Three particular tracks to blast with ferocious tenacity are (1) Liquid Sky And Cold Black Earth: The heaviness is slow and mournful, building from the base of a screeching tension to pure animosity in its most savage, slow form, and at six and a half minutes in length, the “EPIC” label is not too distant a declaration. (2) As I Become One for many obvious reasons, but for the sake of literary accomplishment usually overlooked, the line “Hand Of Death Letting Me Go! I’m Reinventing The Man That You All Thought Was Gone! Ride The Winds Of Change!” is incredibly motivational and fist-thru-your-goddamn-teeth HEAVY. (3) I Only Deal In Truth, once again for many of the already mentioned reasons of Crowbent Superiority, yet riding in at two minutes and thirty seconds into the track is an all-too-short played Power Groove behind one single chorus that is the dichotomy switch of Unlimited Power, the new gauge by which honest thick heaviness is measured. Sever The Wicked Hand is a solid, perfect album in every facet of Sludge Metal. Though I find the thing magnificently epic, I’ll suffice my absolute biased (truthful and without any concept of argument) opinion to leave it in its own genre. Every track is amazing and every moment is passionately played to triumph. Thank you, Crowbar.
