On this edition of Inside Lighthouse we deep dive into the world of DIY spray foam insulation kits.

We also discuss whether or not the the cost savings(if any) that a DIY spray foam kit offers outweigh the benefits of choosing a professional spray foam contractor.

    Here's a guy who fkd up, bought all thus expensive equipment then realized he could of went to his local box store and picked up some. He's basically telling us that we can't do it ourselves, that we are dummies. He's protecting his investment. CZcams has lost of videos on how to. If others can do the DIY foam and there's success, then I'm going that route to.

    Thanks for the video. The best I watched so far! Can I ask a couple questions? First, some people warned me that the closed cell foam can hinder the expansion and retraction of the wooden ceiling structure possibly damaging it. Is that true? Second, do you recommend a vapor barrier or chamber on a wooden ceiling before applying the foam? Thank you so much!

    I am looking for different information: I am looking for a picture of the can of spray foam on the shelf at Menads, Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc. that says >>> this can of spray foam is open cell >>>> this can of spray foam is closed cell. What I am thinking, or finding, is that the low-expanding type that they sell for window and door frame is probably Closed Cell. They claim it will not bow the frame of the window or door, so it will still open and close easy. They say it only expands up to 1 inch layer. On the other hand, the one they advertize as Gap Filler that expands 3 inches or more is probably Open Cell.

    So if you have a sofit vent with ridge venting shouldn't there be a continuous air barrier between the sheathing and your foam? By code it's required for fiberglass insulation why is spray foam exempt from this code?

    Wow the mixed comments some pretty damn rude, but my question is: You repeatedly stated the average homeowner what does a person do when for example they live in an off grid situation in a 396 Sq Ft Tiny Home and the nearest foam contract is a 3 1/2 drive away. The price point as I figured it would be cheaper to use closed cell and do it myself at $2,500.00 versus the quotes I have received that ranged $4,200.00 to $8,500.00 with the biggest chuck of that cost being the 3 1/2 hour drive time. I only post this because I learned real quick having to have a simple perk test on property completed with contractors a mere 20 miles away wanted $3,850.00 just to dig a hole and do a soil test.

    I appreciate you taking the time to explain the difference between open and closed . I hung batts like r-11 to r-38, kraft & unfaced, poly, flame spread, etc. then our company went to spray foam insulation, but I was trained poorly bc the new guys just wanted to get the job done. I no longer work there, but I found out they made serious mistakes on the job that got them into a lot of lawsuits.

    You are so full of $hit. I was quoted $11,000 for my pole barn from a contractor. I knew the kid he had working with him and paid him $500 + $2,700 for the kits. He did a fantastic job. I could have save the $500 and did it myself but it was well worth it. The kits can save you a crapload and do the job just as well if you know what you're doing.

    "You can't do what we can do" ? Like it's magic or something... lol As an automotive mechanic, I've dealt with this type of guy plenty of times. He's been around the world once and met everybody twice. He's always one step ahead, yep, had it figured out himself just doesn't have the time to do it himself, oh he supplies his own parts too, calls every 10 min for an update, swipes three cards and pawns his watch to pay the bill, then talks shit at the local pub about what a cheat you are. One thing's for sure, he aint mossing any meals.

    I have built a shop that is 20x28 and two stories. Unheated garage below, heated shop above. The shop is insulated with fiberglass. I want to insulate the floor of the shop, which is the ceiling of the garage with closed cell foam to provide a vapor barrier and rigidity. The floor joists are 9 1/2" TJI's 20" long. I was going to install a row of solid bridging when I thought that I would be insulating with fiberglass, but now wonder if it is needed with the additional structural support from the closed cell. I also wonder if the bridging/blocking would take away from the structural integrity of the foam by preventing a continuous application of foam. The floor is pretty stiff with only a little spring to it, but any improvement would be welcome. Thank you for reading my ramblings', and I look forward to your response. Thank you, Charlie

    People, these kits are GREAT. I was quoted 10 THOUSAND dollars to foam my shop, I spent $1500 (three kits of closed cell foam) and my shop is so nice now. I used to spray foam for ranger boats, these kits are GREAT and just fine. These guys are just pissed it's putting them out of business. LMAO

  • @stealthassasin1day291
    @stealthassasin1day291 Před 7 měsíci

    How are you going to say not to use it when you said it yourself that you use it on smaller jobs. The equipment you have is everything included in the kit. The only big difference is the spray nozzle may not be as efficient as the kit and the gas pressure not as constant as the air compressor. These sprayers are buying 55 gallon drums closed cell at like $3-3.5k thats 4500 board ft but in DIY kits its about $5500-6k but they are charging 15k minimum to spray that amount. These sprayers are gate keeping the spray foam. If you don't care about $, don't have time or intimidated then hire a professional but if you willing to try and decent at DIY projects, do your prep properly and you'll save yourself 50-60%.

    Great video. Thanks for the information. I'm looking to insulate a couple of 'vaulted' rooms in our home, that are easy to make isolated, due to the lay out of the rooms and roof rafters. I am thinking closed cell, because the rafters are 2x4. The home was built in the 50s. Also I am thinking about eliminating the vent baffles so the foam can be sprayed right on the roof sheeting, with no ventilation, and we get the maximum depth. The home is in CA..... any thoughts? Thanks again.

    The target for these type products are small jobs. If the job is too small, you probably wouldn't find anyone to do it or they would charge you a huge setup charge. My labor cost is $0/hr and have the time to use much cheaper rigid foamboard and fill in the cracks with productss like Great Stuff and Froth Pack.
