I don’t like the pen loop. My new Conklin Diplomat does not fit well. I carry my men’s in a little case.
Yes, I'm not a fan of the pen loop either, but overall liking the notebook. Thanks!
Mine arrived yesterday. It seems like it will do the job.
It is very annoying that the Parker 51 Chinese knock-off (which cost less than ten dollars) writes better than the real vintage Parker 51 that I paid a good deal of money for. Very annoying!
Agreed! It does happen.. I'm not partial to hooded nibs, so I haven't tried the 51 or the copy, but I've seen the same happen with other pens. Price does not always equal function - for sure.
Awesome review, you did a fantastic job and that glass pen of yours is incredible! However my current favorite blues are missing, which are Monteverde Horizon Blue (very close to PPS and Diamine's Blue Velvet, however slightly brighter and more vibrant) and Diamine Royal Blue, a great medium blue without the blurplish hues of regular royal blues. If you get a chance to try them, you might quite like them as I do.
If I remember right, isn't Monteverde Horizon Blue the closest to the Goulet logo? Maybe I'm getting that mixed up though. It is a great looking blue for sure. Thanks!
Is it better than the 630?
I haven't tried the 630, but I'm guessing the nibs are similar. So it would depend on what filling system you prefer: vac vs piston.
I bought some second hand Lamy and Schaeffer pens recently so need to clean them and this was really useful, thank you! I've never used glitter ink and don't think I ever will but the first thought I had was I'd use a glass dip pen rather than risk clogging up even a cheap fountain pen. I use one occasionally for masking fluid (things like animal whiskers, etc.) and you just wipe the ink off with a cloth and put it away for the next time.
Awesome! Yes, a dip pen is the perfect solution for shimmer ink. Thanks!
Great review! Just a thought, you should use an affiliate link for the inks you use as well. I bought the notebook with the link and bought the Black Cherry Private Reserve ink as well because it looks so good in your video. Keep up the great work!
I hope you like it! Black Cherry really is nice to write with - only hang-up is that it can "crustify" a little on the nib, but it doesn't bother me at all, just wipe if off once in a while with a tissue. I try to recommend Goulet as much as I can for inks, and I haven't talked to them about an affiliate program but it's a good idea. Thanks!!
Very nice video
Not able to get in India
I'm sorry to hear that. Another luxury notebook I recommend is William Hannah - not the same as a Plotter, but worth checking out if you're interested in a really nice, luxury notebook system. I have a video review and unboxing of the A5 size.
Very nice video with different insight compared to all the other reviews I've watched! You earned a new sub. After 10 months, would you still recommend this pen? Is it durable and reliable?
Thanks! Yes, it is a really good pen. I'm curious about the 9016 or 9013, same pen but slimmer. But not really, I want the #8 nib :)
I just got this pen and LOVE it except I cannot get the cartridge to "connect" / feed the ink. I dipped it to see if I could tolerate the XF nib. Surprisingly it's more like a Fine or even a MF. The mechanisms are smoother than another reviewer experienced but so far, no ink is coming through via the feed. If yours worked, I guess it would be hard to diagnose. I did use a thin, blunt metal crochet hook (flat part) to attempt to nudge the cartridge in further. The mechanism works, but as I say, no ink flowing. Thanks if anyone knows.
Sorry to hear that. I can usually feel the "click" when the cartridge connects. It can take some time for gravity to help the ink flow down into the feed - I just store it nib-down for a few hours. Crossing fingers for you.
@@KendallW Thanks, but I took the cartridge out and the seal was not broken, meaning no ink could flow. I had to use a small nail to puncture the top. So, while at it I used my syringe to suck out the black and insert my fave Pilot Tsuki-yo blue. it's working now. I'll try a different cartridge when this goes dry. til then... write on 🖋
Ive been using this very note book as a daily work horse foe months and its held up brilliantly, Paper is execrable for daily use and when I’ve filled the incert it gets popped in a draw in case i need to dig up a note weeks later :)
I use one Travellers notebook as a Bullet Journal (Diary and Management system) and one as a note taking system similar to commonplace book. I don't throw the away, they are a very valuable resource. I like to keep it light, so I use two notebooks, maximum.
I appreciate the ideas. I'm new to this style so it's good to hear how other people are using it. I agree, I can't see myself stuffing this cover with more than a few notebooks.
Hi-good -
Are there other brands of leather covers people recommend besides the official Travelers Notebooks? What about refill notebooks you prefer? And the big question, how do you display/store your filled in notebooks? Do you have a system for the shelf or do you permanently keep them in a leather cover?
I have been making my own storage folders. There is a video on my channel how to do it.
Travellers item 011 is a hard cover binder that holds 5 notebooks. Personally, I number them and put the on a shelf. You could jut put a rubber band around them, I did that with a couple of years worth of Field Notes notebooks before moving up the the travellers Normal size...
I use a Poromo TN cover and it is beautiful and soft and smells great as for the inserts once you are done you can catalog them and there is a binder they make for them to put on your shelves personally I label and date the front covers and store them in water tight totes there is a special tote from Walmart and online that has a seal so water cannot intrude.
@@cerealnana I will have to take a look, thanks!
@@Phandrens That makes perfect sense they would have this product. I can't believe I didn't know about it! Though not the best looking in my opinion - but super functional. Thanks!
Good job
I got the green one 🐙 and love it. I'm thinking of using glow in the dark paint to make the statue more awesome. It's gonna look good with my HP Lovecraft book collection. Hail Cthulhu! 🙌🐙
Lol, that's awesome!
The CACKLE I cackled at your quotation marks around Sailor's MF 😅🤣🤣 My KWZ inks smell like vanilla. They aren't marketed as scented, but all those I've tried smell like vanilla to me. You got some great inks to try! I'm intrigued by those that smear out to such different colors (looking at you, Diamine Pick Me 👀) I've added a couple to my wishlist. If you aren't covered in ink, do you even fountain pen 😉 New subscriber! I look forward to checking out your channel!! Thanks for sharing 😊
Yeah, that Sailor "MF" Lol, more like EF. Thanks!
So far, nothing managed to dethrone Visconti Blue, not so much because of the color (which is a superb clean blue) but mostly because it creates a contrast which makes the text easy to read (as in the eyes are relaxed) on many types of paper - Asa-gao is close; I would like to try Leonardo, but it’s out of stock, and I will definitely get next RO Fire and Ice.
I dipped mine in fabric conditioner overnight, and just when I thought the smell finally went away, it came back.
Yeah, sorry to hear it :(
Not again repeating that BS about sacrificing pen to a Baystate Blue. Normal ink. Can be used in any pen and can be cleaned from any pen unless it is some transparent BS pen. Then it can left a bit of stain but that does nothing. And it flows beautifully, has low surface tension, so no residue is left over that it’s hard to use up. Also cleaning hands is nothing unusual.
I think Doodlebud has the best video on Baystate Blue. And yes, it isn't as scary as people think.
I am currently using Diamine Sargasso Sea. It is the best blue that I currently have.
It really is an amazing blue, love it
That Asvine is the bomb. My personal favorite one to write with is the WingSung
Nice review, depressing quote.
LOL, thanks! Yeah, I appreciate a little dark humor now and then :)
The E95s is also my only gold nib and it's amazing, I also don't use it as a pocket pen because it's risky and it's my best writer. My next gold nib would be a vanishing point in M because I head it has a bouncy nib like the E95s. Nice collection!
I figured I probably wasn't the only person that didn't want to use it as a pocket pen. I think the VP Medium will work wonderfully. Thanks!
@@KendallW yeah and also is full size and very comfortable when posted.
Thanks for sharing your collection. I love my Jinhaos too and recently tried an Asvine pen, so since you asked for a recommendation, I highly recommend the Asvine v126, the frosted finishes are unique and pretty cool, but they also do a piston version if you don't want a vacuum filler. I cycle trough most of my collection (there are some everyday pens that just stay inked in black ink), but I can't leave them uncleaned! I have to clean them right away and just store them in a different case so I don't use it again until my other pens get used. Have been able to let go of some pens with this method...though not quite as fast as my acquiring them lol
I do have an Asvine, but it's the v169. I've heard great things about the v126 though - consistently good things. Lol, I'm starting to think about cleaning all of the pens at the same time and... yeah I'll probably need to change my plan.
You certainly have a beautiful collection of fountain pens. Thanks for a great video, as always.
Thanks!
Have you ever had to clean ALL of your pens at once? Or do you have a method to cycle through your entire collection? What brand am I missing (under $80 USD or so)?
I'm curious to see if your pen still smells. if it's true that the smell comes from the resin being under-cured I wouldn't be surprised if the sunlight didn't work for you. especially if the glass cup is what you left the pen in. some people don't know this but glass naturally absorbs UV light (which is why you don't get sun burns while driving in the sunniest days). so it would make sense that the pen didn't cure much while in that glass. I have a triple tail and I'm gonna try leaving on my window sill for a few days with my window open. and I'll come back with and update at some point. I did already try soaking it in pen cleaner and used a higher concentration of the stuff and it did help a little but not by much.

When you posted the cap, did you cross-thread it? It looked off-center.
Yes, it's pretty easy to cross-thread. I've heard that is also an issue with the Boheme too though, not just a Moonman thing.
Thank you. 😊
I just got my Noodler’s Triple Tail. It’s not nearly as “aromatic” as my Ahabs, Konrads, Standards or Charlie’s. If you still have the pen, get some of Noodler’s .308 cartridges to go in it. I used them on my Ahab pens and they are fantastic. They hold way more ink than the pump converter and you can fill they with ink, cap them and set them aside for a fast refill of the pen without having to get out all the usual pen filling equipment. I think the cartridges hold around 2.5ml of ink or so. It’s a great upgrade for the pen.
So glad yours is aroma-light, lol. I found I wasn't using the Triple Tail and it was part of a giveaway - so no longer in my collection. Good information though, thanks!
I have all three of the pens mentioned and love them all. I wish the Q1 posted a little more definitely and had the big boy nib of the other two. The x159 I adore and for ages was my go to writer, but in my humble opinion the 9019 is just in a class of its own. For me it has no flaw. Nice vid Bud.
Yes, I have to agree. Love the 9019. I haven't yet tried the slightly slimmer version, 9016 I think. Maybe soon.
I have received one. It seems legit but on the cap, instead of Jinhao Pen Heritage engraved, it has printed Jinhao Pen Inheritance. Could it be counterfeit?
I guess I miss read mine.. it also says "inheritance" not heritage. Thanks

Yes the slash at the top left is for date "month/day". I write the year on the top right corner. I am sure you could also do "day/year" and then write month to the right. As a guy, I put the notebook in my back pocket with the rings towards the outward side, so when I sit down the rings don't get damaged or dig into me. No pen holder on mine, I keep my pen clipped to my shirt.
Good to know, thanks! I'm curious if the sharp-ish edge of the metal has caused you any issues? I haven't gotten around to grinding it down a bit, but it does catch on the inside of my pocket sometimes.
@@KendallW No issues with the edge. The small plotter I carry in my back jeans pocket with the rings outwards or away from my bottom so I don’t sit down on the rings.
One thing no one ever seems to talk about is how the valve seal actually doesn’t work as intended. The section inner diameter is wider diameter than the valve seal so it never seals up. It’s a defective copy.
You know, I think mine used to seal off when I first got it. Lately though, yeah, it doesn't seem like it seals 100% - I thought it was just my pen. Good to know!

It isn't a "complete" list, and since it grows and changes it will never be, but info like this is helpful. Pretty sure I have some of these but I'll add the ones that are missing. Thanks!
@@KendallW your correct....it is always a growing list
New subscriber and enjoying your content! And you’re cute!
Thanks!
Just as I was about to make a spreadsheet of the colossal list of Asian (especially Chinese) pens recommended all over fountain pen forums, I had the thought - "hey, there's gotta be someone out there who already had the foresight to realize how useful such a list would be..." And here I am, posting on his channel! Thank you for your focus and consideration for making such a list 🙏🏾
You would think there would be a database somewhere but not really. Every store has their own set of data, but there isn't an "IMDB" type of site. Maybe one day, but for now I still like this idea. Although I haven't updated the list for quite a while. I reached out to several pen reviewers to see if they kept the measurement data and they could just send it to me, but none of them keep it, lol. Most of them just add it to their video, then if they need the measurements again will look up their own video. Maybe one day there will be an organized way that we can all add info to a trusted list. If you see something missing, send me an email or comment on the spreadsheet and I can add it. Thanks!
I nabbed a whole bottle of Sui-Gyoku off Amazon for like $12. It was a crazy good deal. Great ink, definitely in my wheelhouse. I haven't inked it up in a while, maybe I should do that soon.
It's really nice. Not surprising for a Pilot ink :)
Great seeing you back. Question, How is the 699 holding up? I like the pen not sure if its worth it. Had bad experience with cross threading.
I don't have too many issues with cross threading, but I do need to keep the vac section closed most of the time. It tends to burp a lot, and when I least expect it. Lol. As fun as the vac filling mechanism is, I love a good cartridge converter pen.
I also preffer the cartridge converter method as I like to change inks frequently.@@KendallW
Congrats on one year!!!!! It’s a milestone!
I'm in the UK and it's so good to have something of this quality very local to me here. Best quality leather and papers and David & Jo are just a pleasure to deal with. The company being named after their two kids 😄Since I found them in 2018 I've had a few A5's inc' custom versions; an A6 and a pocket size. I have written over 2,000 sheets over these years so have archive sets all over the place. 😆Absolutely love these and it's a daily writing journal for me.👍🏻Extremely recommended too.
2,000 sheets! You may be setting a record there! Thanks!
My mother discovered an old bottle of my father’s about 1/3 full, bought by him in London in the 90s for £3.95! I’m probably only going to try it out with my Jinhao 82 as I’m not keen on clogging my expensive Waterman, Pilot or Mont Blanc. It has dried out at least a little with visible red sheen coating the inside of the bottle after having sat for so long - the cap was almost glued shut from the dried ink. I had no idea NOS bottles are going for $200, which is kinda nuts.
It really is great ink. That said, there are a lot that are similar enough that I won't be sad when I use it up. Super cool find!
I had bad luck with this pen, the threads in the cap cross thread all the time. Otherwise, good looking pen.
I put my Noodlers in a ziploc bag with an irish soap bar for 3 days....now it smells like feet and soap..LOL I think I will try , the ziploc bag with a dryer sheet , next.
Haha, yes it is a real struggle. I do think the UV light was the best if you have access to one. But a dryer sheet couldn't hurt. Crossing fingers for you.
