      Thank you for your question. If memory serves me right, I needed to access the roots of this neo to trim off dead roots and clean up the plant. There are many reasons to remossing besides just having to replace old or decaying moss. Many growers will remoss it on an annual basis right before the growing season in order to showcase the roots. I've heard that many seasoned Korean growers will remoss their neos multiple times throughout the year - the reason for which I do not know. But I do have a feeling it has to do with aesthetics. No algae > algae... :D

    hey trac good to see an update. What happened to your neofinetia's? I'm really suprised you are suffering from scale. Your bleach bath method has helped me out so much in that regard to erradicate all bugs on my orchids. Really appreciate you sharing that with us. Others fiddle around with home-made garlic tinctures which never worked in my experience but your bleach bath dunks have saved so many of my orchids. For thrips I would have to repeat the treatments a few times in a 10 day interval at a lower concentration but again nothing else works as well. And hardly anyone uses that method which surprises me. It's my go to for any new orchid now and its great for keeping algae in check too (or cyanobacteria if you want to sound fancy 😄).

      @TracMcNguyen Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you for continued viewership. Unfortunately, I don't have a large enough container to soak my catts nor would it appealing to me to mix up that large of a batch of bleach. I try to use that method sparingly as much as possible. I sorta look at the soft scales as a sign that the orchids are in distress and that I'm doing something wrong with my culture (mostly neglect, lol). I do still have my large neo collection. Stay tune for that update :)

    I am sorry to hear that you lost some! If you would like to have a DIY scale / mealy bug problem solver, consider infusing isopropyl alcohol with garlic and you will be able to keep the scale under control and eventually clear the orchids in question of the problem. I usually do not like to mentioning anything about my channel on other creator's videos, but I have a video with the recipe for the garlic infused alcohol, just in case you are wanting to try something different to get a handle on the scale 🫶🏼 I love your new orchid racks! They are absolutely fantastic.. also with that hanging space for mounts. Very efficient! 😍covert rescue 😅👍🏼you can already take of that catasetinae keiki and pot it up separately, if you want. Those roots are long enough to absorb water and it is leafing out, so ... if you want, it is well advanced to grow independently. What fun 😃 Thank you for this update! Wishing you a great day 🫶🏼

  • @Spencer_Plant_Projects

    I hope this message isn't taken the wrong way- a lot of your Cattleya aren't really thriving and looking pretty sad. You should be able to boost the health of the overall collection pretty easily though. The solution is to focus on roots! You can easily get more air to the roots by adding in an inorganic component into your bark, lava rock or pumice. The other issues is pot size- you can see that your large Cattleya are much healthier and doing well because the pots are appropriately sized to the root system. A number of your plants are "overpotted"...For all of the smaller plants with weak root systems you should repot to the smallest sized pot possible you can fit the living roots in. You will know that you have achieved the right potting media, container size and watering regime because your leaves should be turgid and even the shriveled back bulbs should perk up once the roots really get established. Hope this helps!

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen Před rokem

      LOL, you are absolutely right about the state of my catts! It's not that I don't how to improve my orchids' health. It is more of a negligence problem. I go on for months without giving them a thought. But I hear you about the roots. It is a constant struggle for me as things are always eating the roots (slugs and cockroaches, or whatever ugh). And thank you for your advice about the overpotting. It's definitely not the first time I've heard of this before by others, but I have never really been offered the reason why. Would you care to elaborate?

    • @Spencer_Plant_Projects
      @Spencer_Plant_Projects Před rokem

      @@TracMcNguyen its very hard to control the correct water retention and root drydown when the size of the pot >>> the size of its functional root system. You can end up where the medium is retaining too much moisture for too long. Cattleya can be constantly moist but only if they have really good air exchange at the roots and they are approaching dryness within 10-12 hours. Some Japanese growers grow Cattleya in pure sphagnum but the trick is that they grow in the smallest pots possible in high temp high light environments that dries the media nearly completely within a half day. These plants are extremely robust and should thrive on neglect if your pot size and potting media are in harmony and they should have the energy to produce robust root systems even with pests as this is normal for them to experience in the wild. If the plants have dead or weak roots, repotting anytime is beneficial. If the plant is relatively healthy only repot when new roots are initiating (pretty common advice). Hope that explanation makes sense.

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen Před rokem

      @@Spencer_Plant_Projects Thank you. I think I'm following. So in theory, if the media were to dry out in let's say an hour or two, the pot size should be irrelevant, yes? I don't have much media in those pots, btw. About 50% of the volume is taken up by inverted netted baskets. To your second point about thriving on neglect - I'm not so much convinced about that one. I've visited a couple of my retiring orchid society members who are no longer able to take care of their plants and have orchids in the same condition as mine if not worse. I do believe in that saying, but only to a certain degree.

    • @Spencer_Plant_Projects
      @Spencer_Plant_Projects Před rokem

      @@TracMcNguyen yes if you can adjust the mix to dry out faster I suspect your plants will have an improvement in health. Leca/pumice is good to dilute bark with. Try a few different ratios to see what your plants like best in the conditions you have. I think it's normal for orchid collections to go through periods of neglect, mine included. As to your point of older orchid growers and neglected Cattleya I agree it is common. Many people only have learned to grow plants that have one years worth of roots to support their plant and they don't get much survival year to year. If neglect happens those plants will decline quickly.

    • @tomokitty2153
      @tomokitty2153 Před 11 měsíci

      @@TracMcNguyen Truly, it is mysterious, but these plants love to be snug in their pots, with little bark, in my experience. It's almost like they are drowning in all the bark that surrounds them when they are in too large of a pot. This is actually true of most plants in pots. I'm no expert, but have been growing orchids since the 80's, and whenever a cattleya looks tired, I pot it down, and expose the roots at the base of the pseudobulbs. Rarely do I need to increase pot size because as the old pseudobulbs get replaced with new growth, I just re center the plant in its pot. Thank you for wonderful videos. I always love seeing your collection.

    Hi Trac, love all your videos, and this one as well! Your backyard looks beautiful with all the orchids and other plants growing outside. I only have one Neo (I'm in Germany and they're relatively hard to get your hands on, and quite expensive), it's called Houmeiden and I've had it for at least 5 years at this point. It's started to put out a lot of new growths in the last 1.5 years and is looking really pretty with its variegation and purple root tips. I think I only got it because of one of your older videos about all of your Neos, so thank you! I understand not wanting to give away your divisions, I have 300+ orchids at this point and have given away 4 keikis and one Cattleya division because I really didn't have the space for them at the time, and I only gave them to family members or friends, where I knew the plants would be looked after well. Hope all of your plants will do well and good luck with the garden project!

      I really think that depends on where you from their shopping location, current climate, and how much you like the fish. For me because these were quite precious to me I didn't want to take any chances and had them ship them fast. I've had goldfish that were lost in shipment for over a week but somehow managed to survived, but those were inexpensive babies. I think kingkoi packaged things extremely well so the risk of them dying was quite low. But again they were precious to me so 🛫.
