Pixel Art Character Design w/ Commentary!
Heya Pals, we're back with some more pixel art content for you. This time we're taking it easy with a live design session / timelapse with some commentary. This one took quite a while to get right, probably needed a bit more reference work to avoid all the pixel pushing in the middle of the process, but I'm happy with where the character ended up, for now!
Hope you find the process enjoyable and informative.
Thanks!

I built an editor to instantly teleport around my game's quests
zhlédnutí 11KPřed 14 dny
Hey pals! Just a short update from me! I filmed this last weekend but didn't have a chance to edit it as I've been out of town. Building this little quest editor to click through my game was a really fun break from the grant applications I've been doing and totally relieved a lot of stress that was building around managing quest content in Insignia. I'm actually working on a steam page right no...

Man you make it look so easy!
I hate the translation 😔😮💨
"You can't make decisions on something that doesn't exist" is something I really needed to hear. Has helped me so much just starting with some kind of blob, and then tweaking it. Great video as usual!
As someone who's tried to learn color theory for the purpose of making art in games, this finally makes sense to me.
Very good tutorial
a really great explication. thanks so much
Hey @ 4:40 what tool did you use to raise that section up? Thanks for the awesome content!
This is like my dream job , I've been following you for almost a year now. It's ashame I'm not qualified yet or else I'd even move to Australia for this position lol. Keep up all the good work dude, I'm going to keep pushing and maybe one day I'll be good enough to accept an offer like this! I absolutely can't wait to play insignia 😁
For me strict color palletes are not necessary anymore. They used it for older pc or console games because of the perfomance limitations they had. If you look on physical art color palletes are way bigger and not strict most of the time. For me the only important thing is the setting horror = dark / happy = high contrast / sad = low contrast just to name few examples.
Im so sorry you had to go through COVID brother, i hope you stay healthy.😢
Wich program do you use For making those, I tried it with gimp so far,
The bright red hair is something so specific I'd keep that for the main character only. The red highlight on the conductor's hair makes it look like he's the main character's dad or they could be related. It's always fun to watch you do pixel art. Great video.
They could be related...
Where do I send my work for feedback?
These reminds me of monkey island
i could not imagine how useful a dedicated tool for pixel art could be, i always thought gimp (which i prefer to photoshop especially for the selection tools when working with single pixels) can do everything thats needed.
Beautiful!! May I ask how did you do the animated tree waves of leaves on the right side of the scene? GORGEOUS! Thanks! Jan
The stardew music almost put me to sleep ngl
I would be happy if you answer this question , thank you : Walking in Aseprite etc. I don't understand how they do the attack effects. Can you express this with characters consisting of zeros?
🤩
love seeing how excited you got for unlocking this for yourself haha, you are a great inspiration keep it up man!
i love this content so much! im starting my own game dev journey. im learning both pixel art and programming and this channel has been my main inspiration for the art side of things. thank you for all that you do!
After 7 months of this video, to me the animator is still awful, one of the main reasons why i gave up on Godot for now
I had to watch at 0.75x

Make a video about creating 1bit pixel art.
Is there another video that explains this? I don't quite understand what I'm looking at! >_> I just understand the general vibe that apparently Aseprite is pretty cool!
Basically it's a color replace Replacing the first color you chose with the next color on the list
bro i like your video its help me full experience for start explain my game ideas... , but one you do not tell it is the tool you draw to explain how get started game idea haha , please whats tool name you use on video , and thanks
ı only have keyboard and mouse. Can I use aseprite or should I buy some drawnig pad or tablet??
I've been getting really into pixel art (and hopefully game design) recently, so seeing tutorials and other videos like these really help. Ive always loved games that had level editors, like Portal 2 and Stealth Inc (1 & 2). Plus Minecraft since it's well...Minecraft. The first main experience I had with tilemaps was the PC version of Stealth Inc, since the editor has a separate menu for background tiles. Which has them displayed as a full screen of tiles to pick from (or highlight multiple).
For the leaf particles to not look like poison, maybe try adding a soft border to each sprite of the animation.
greatly appreciate wht you doing here
Adam sounds so much like Bob Ross. Really relaxing.
i really liked the version where you just made him a little taller and wider, i think you should go for it!
i can't get Vector2 direction to work
Great video. Love watching you work.
You are insanely talented
I really like him. Was a fan of the tiny hammer to give some contrast with how huge he was, but if this is the context we meet him it's the right call - he's definitely more conductor than jeweller. Also can we talk about the steam-mane on the train horse?! Outstanding.
This is fucking sick Adam.
Like another comment said, I really think that chain should be connected to a pocket watch. Goes with the train/conductor/engineer vibe. You could even add in an (idle?) animation of him checking his pocket watch.
That's an interesting thought! I'll consider it moving forward with the character design. Alternatively, what would you think about a whistle?
But the "woke" style is a little... 😅
? You are obsessed… Find something better to do.
? How do you have a "woke style"
he gives of such braum vibes from runeterra and I love it. such a wholesome homie
I cannot unsee that this is Young Braum. He left Piltover to become The Hero of The Freljord. The only thing he's missing is to steal a Door from a very grumpy Ram.
I've come to the conclusion that my biggest flaw is outfit design, this guy looks amazing, mine look generic, can't wait to play Insignia
Watching your process is amazing man. The way you started by drawing a big blog outline and turned it into a good looking character.
В какой программе рисуешь?
So inspiring man. You might be the most talented and skilled pixel art artist ive ever seen. Just wanted to ask what color palette you use? The colors just seem wonderful and i want to test them! Goodluck and i will definitely buy Insignia when it drops. I recently got aseprite and ive been trying to learn pixel art and you have been my biggest inspiration. I thank you on behalf of all the people that youve inspired!
He uses a custom palette! He has a video on how to make them yourself as well. Not sure how you'd get a hold of his though
Hi Adam. Hi buddy. Hi Pal.
Inspiring work! At first I thought the chain was a pocket watch, since he's a conductor. Really cool how much you can do with such a small canvas! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome video
