hi, I'm a widow and i have duel a Window 10- Linux Oct 2019 machine, that was my husband's gaming machine. I will soon-or-later have to move to it, my old machine is starting to act poorly, though, I've kept it up. (except for updating Linux!) I need to know how to update both machines - I will use this old machine as backup and switch to his machine for my primary. I've been in this pickle since he died in 2020... can you tell me how and where to educate myself to the point that I can update (esp) the Linux side without fear that I am going to wreak everything. I've just got a few questions about how to load the New Linux in the right spot without destroying the duel machine Grub (???) aspect. In short, Where do I start? The Irony is, I'm not entirely ignorant. All I will do when they stop updating Windows 10 - same thing i did when they stopped updating Windows 7. I stopped using the windows side except for some few programs that I liked. I'd like to Try Wine again, that would free me from the Tyranny of MS, entirely.. How deep into the Linux side do i need to dive to master updating?

Since Windows 3.1 in 1992 the Windows operating system has been bulling it's customer base. I will disconnect one PC from the internet to run my few key Windows programs. For internet use I will use Linux or Mac. My hardware has yet to hit its physical limits yet Windows 10 is limiting all functionality. Most features that limit my computing experience I have no use for. Windows XP was the best, F Microsoft.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 *💻 Introduction to SysVinit and Systemd* - SysVinit was the traditional init system in Linux, responsible for system initializationd managing services. - SVinit had limitations, such as its serial execution model and lack of support for dependencies and parallel startup. 00:44 *🗺️ The Boot Sequence and Init Process* - The boot sequence starts with the BIOS/UEFI, which loads the bootloader, which then loads the kernel. - The kernel starts the init process (PID 1), which is responsible for system initialization and service management. - The init process can be different systems, like SysVinit, Upstart, or Systemd. 01:53 *🔍 The Functions of the Init Process* - The init process handles the later stages of the boot process, configures the system environment, starts processes for logging in, and cleans up after terminated processes. - In the pre-Systemd era, the init process would inherit orphaned processes and try to shut them down. 03:47 *🕰️ The SysVinit System* - SysVinit, also known as SysV or System V, was the traditional init system used in many early Linux distributions. - SysVinit organized the runtime environment into a sequential set of stages called runlevels, which had to complete before the next one could begin. - This sequential execution model led to slow startup times and issues with dependencies and conflicts. 09:41 *🔀 Alternatives to SysVinit* - After the limitations of SysVinit became apparent, alternative init systems emerged, such as OpenRC, Upstart, and Systemd. - OpenRC introduced parallelization and improved dependency management, while Upstart was developed by Canonical for Ubuntu. - Systemd, developed by a Red Hat engineer, aimed to address the shortcomings of Upstart and became widely adopted in the Linux ecosystem. 16:46 *🌐 The Systemd Init System* - Systemd defines services as "units" and allows for more flexible and dynamic management of dependencies and system state. - Systemd replaces the runlevels of SysVinit with "targets," which group units together to define specific system states. - Systemd is designed to be more responsive to changes in the system environment and can start services based on events, not just a predefined order. 24:28 *🌟 Pros and Cons of Systemd* - Pros: Faster boot process, more flexibility, standardized configuration files, and additional advanced features. - Cons: Concerns about feature creep, potential security risks due to running as a user process, and violation of the Unix philosophy. 27:08 *🗺️ Critique of Systemd's Design Approach* - Systemd's design approach has limitations, particularly in its tightly coupled nature and interlocking dependencies. - Tightly coupled systems are undesirable as they make it difficult to integrate with other applications and are prone to breaking. - Systemd's "all or nothing" strategy makes it challenging to replace or use it partially. 27:48 *🧪 Potential Issues with Systemd's Adoption* - Systemd's tight coupling to the Linux operating system may create challenges if Linux were to decline in the future. - There are ongoing concerns about the support and security of Systemd as it has grown increasingly complex. - The departure of Systemd's lead developer, Lennart Pottering, to Microsoft raises questions about the future direction of the project. 29:38 *🛠️ Systemd Configuration and Resources* - Systemd provides flexibility in configuring various components, such as setting up custom targets, units, and configurations. - The best manuals on Systemd are available in the Red Hat repository, which can be used as a resource for further exploration. - The speaker encourages the audience to explore the Systemd topic further by checking the recommended resources. BITE THE BULLET, MOVE TO LINUX NOW, AND JUST DITCH MICROSOFT. One caveat: most colleges and universities and many companies "standardize" to MS Windoze. Period. I ran into that in 2010 when I went back and completed an old bachelors degree I left hanging when I joined the service, learned electronics, and changed career tracks. That was 2009 to 2011, and I got around it with a few rough spots. In 2020 I went back for another degree, this time in chemistry. It was worse. Using non-MS text editors, I could not even see some of the graphics in the labs, so many of my molecular drawings were incomplete. No way to complete a lab without the drawings upon which the instructions are based. You can sort of work around some of this by using a computer at the university library to print your labs (or other graphics-containing files) to PDF format. Usually. However, even in Windoze I prefer Libre Office, but it is NOT always 100% MS Word, Excel, etc compatible, but it is FAR better than several years back. My current version of Libre Office WILL read and save Word files in .doc and .docs formats and Excel files in .xls and .xlsx formats. However, it's default is the Open Document Format (ODF). This means Open Document Text (.odt) and Open Document Spreadsheet (.ods), etc. I believe Word and Excel can both use .odt and .ods formats, but I try to save files fron Libre Office as .doc/docx or .xls/xlsx for MS tool users. Where problems most often crop up is in graphics. So be prepared to deal with graphics issues if you use Non-MS tools in college. If you have the option, renting or purchasing a basic tablet or laptop running MS apps might be best. Most schools seem to offer such a program through their bookstore or library.
