I've known of RJ for many years because I'm a mx spectator and dirt bike Rider. But I didn't realize someone so successful in life can be so vulnerable. I've suffered with mental health problems for fourty years. I didn't know it can affect people that have everything. God bless you RJ. We are not alone brother. Keep plowing forward. Even today all these years people still think about you and your motocross skills. From a person with your affliction that's similar. Things always get better. Take care of yourself RJ.you have people that love you and admire your life. 👍

Damn, that was tough to watch. Who would have thought that one of the gnarliest racers f all time would be in such a bad place. When he mentioned his friend Dave Martin from NY, I remembered being friends with Dave. We would ride and race together. Dave would tell me he was friends with Ricky and I never believed him until I saw Dave walking away from the podium with Ricky and carrying Ricky's trophy from the Binghamton National. By the way Dave, if you ever read this comment, you still owe me dinner for that Clifford race where I beat you nearly 40 years ago. LOL

amazing foundation and amazing people, and really awesome you guys have started this and kept these guys at there best when they where at there worst. and that there is even this type of support for up and coming athletes and riders. 🙌🏻

Clint Hardick is a dear friend of mine, and I remember you and others well from those days, Rick (though we never met). Thank you so much for sharing your story. As part of my work, I do suicide intervention training for various organizations, and I appreciate so much how you describe what you went through, and what kept you from following through. Your story strikes me as deeply honest. And that's what we need to be when it comes to sharing our mental health stories. Thank you so much.

I remember a rough patch in my life when i thought how much better it would be if i were dead. My wife picked up on my vibes and sternly and emotionally warned me that other people will be affected by my death if it was my own hand. I think about that every time i have those negative thoughts.

500 two strokes and my Hero...Ricky was awesome! The races when Ward kept a close 2nd was so fun to watch. Never missed Motoworld and tried like heck to keep my feet on the pegs and wheels on the ground!

That was a good video and a powerful story. RJ got people's attention in 1982, and then from 1986 - 1989 he was The Man. I never heard this story until this video, so it's right it came from RJ, himself.

wow ! sorry rick, money is the root of all evil, my story is like yours I dont talk to any of my family anymore its so sad no matter how much you give its never enough my family wasn't interested in the hard work motocross was to me they called me a loser for wanting to even ride oh but wait $$$ ya disgusting oh well your not alone its everywhere.

Steve and Peggy here and this is the first time I have ever seen this entire video. As someone that has known the both of you and seen and briefly held that handsome Son of yours watching this old video is very special mostly because I know how well you are doing today.

I'm a crazed mx rider from the 80s ... I get it, I love racing. I think the problem with Rick is life isn't about him or me or who we are or what we've done. The value in life comes from helping others in need and that's where the true joy of life comes from. Serving others... it's exactly what Jesus taught and he is right. God bless Rick, I hope he can take a step of faith, get connected with God to see his purpose in life for the here and now. Thanks for sharing his story, it's interesting the that people steal, kill, and destroy others for wealth and riches but it isn't worth a hill of beans when it comes to finding true happiness and any hope of a future.

Great series! Watched Ricky’s episode too and so amazing. I never reached your level, Jeff, but was deeply in MX in CA and then moto journalism through 1987. Holy cow when it all ended I went through years of withdrawal. Life is good now, but you guys offering your insights makes it better for everyone who’s raced, loved it, misses it, etc. Highs and Lows….makes life rich and textured, but can bring you down without a helping hand, a voice, a friend. Thank you!!!
